Summary: Two versions of this funny film on video
Review: I saw this film on video when it first came out. I'd never heard of it, but I saw it on the shelf of the 20/20 in Studio City.

However, when I ordered it, from Amazon, I think, I was surprised to see that the video had been "altered" (exactly what the euphemism used to stand for). I went back to 20/20 and found that they had the same new version I'd bought. The older, funnier and much sexier one had vanished. I hope that a choice will be given if this comes out on DVD: a choice such is being given now for "Spun," for example. I wonder whose agent went all to pieces and had that changed?

Summary: Hurry with the DVD of this extremely funny movie!
Review: I was really surprised that this movie received such mediocre views when it was first released. This movie is extremely funny in a silly sort of way, but without seeming stupid. This is one of the few comedies that I tend to watch over and over, and I am looking forward to when it will be released on DVD. If you're interested "Dave" with Kevin Kline is the other comedy I'll watch repeatedly. However, fitting in with the military comedy genre, I also recommend "Operation Petticoat" and "No Time for Sergeants"

Summary: Great film, under-rated and worthy of a DVD (when?!)
Review: This is without a doubt one of the funniest sea movies ever. Yet it got mediocre reviews when it came out. Kelsey Grammer plays a renegade sub captain who gets his first command not on a nuclear sub, but on a mothballed diesel rustbucket, destined for scrap after some wargames guaranteed to deep-six his naval career.

But Captain Dodge (Grammer) has a lot of tricks up his sleeve. He even gets the best from his mutinous crew and by the pirate scene (priceless) I was pretty much slumped on the couch, laughing my keester off. We like this one so much we watched it twice in a row.

Yeah, it's another submarine film (I can't resist them!) and this one is...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED--even if it's not yet on DVD.

Summary: FUNNY, FUNNY MOVIE
Review: When will this be available on DVD? This is one of my family's favorite 'old stand-by' movies, (along with George of the Jungle and True Lies!) Visitors to our house not only get to see a funny movie, but also get to 'enjoy' the four of us acting out our favorites lines..."It's a parrot, from the Caribbean".

Summary: A must see for submariners, and great comedy for everyone
Review: As a former submariner, I might be more attuned to submarine humor, but I cannot imagine anyone not liking this movie. It is a bit corny in a few places, but Kelsey Grammer had one of his finest roles in this comedic look at sub life.

Summary: Not bad
Review: The first time i watched this movie i wasn't crazy about it. Maybe i was in a bad mood that day. I gave it another chance some time later and really enjoyed it. Rob Schneider was hysterical as usual. Kelsey Grammer and the exploits of his misfit crew make for a good laugh. If you liked "hot shots" or "naked gun" movies, you will enjoy this too.

Summary: Hilarious
Review: Kelsey Grammer plays this role so very well, yet the cast or characters portraying a bunch of outcasts are what make the movie. Relatively clean language and great entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.

Summary: A ROARING GOOD TIME WITH A FEW SURPRISES
Review: I absolutely loved this movie. It was cerebral but also had its share of sight gags as well. At first glance, it appears to have no socially redeeming qualities but as the submarine games progress, the crew of misfits rise to the occasion and succeed. The plot is plausible and one which would never occur to the average citizen. I am waiting with baited breath for this to be released on DVD so I can see more of the hilarious out takes of the filming. Kelsey Grammer was supurb as the Commander to a crew of misfit characters with similiarities to comedic WWII naval movies ala Cary Grant situations. The song "In the Navy" by The Village People lends its own joy to the film.

Summary: A great movie to watch over and over....
Review: It is unfortunate that so many movies that become box office hits are so forgettable, and yet there exist good films like DOWN PERISCOPE that are passed over in review. I never tire of watching this movie; being an ex-Navy man, some of the characters spot-on match people I knew during my time, so I can appreciate the nautical humor. However, I place this movie in a league with the really good comedy movies of the last 20 or so years that combine brainless humor with a thoughtful, intellectual, and moral message. Definetly a must-buy when it comes out on DVD.

Summary: A movie I can watch over and over again...
Review: I will be so glad when this movie comes out on DVD...I can't wait to be a proud owner of it!! It is, without a doubt, one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Being in the navy and actually being able to relate to some of the characters is what makes it so funny to me!! If Ebert gave it a thumbs down, then obviously he has no sense of humor. One rule I live by; NEVER listen to the movie critics. If I did, I would have missed out on this and an opportunity to laugh, which is something every one can use in their life. People need to turn a deaf ear when it comes to critics and their opinions of movies. We all have minds of our own and should use them when it comes to something as simple as an entertaining movie. Besides, who died and left them experts of movies anyway? A question that will never be answered...
