Review: The great, sad, gentle sweep of "Chairman of the Board" remains in the mind of the moviegoer as a promise of what film can be. Standing above fashion, it creates a world so convincing that it becomes, for a time, another life we might have lived. The film, starring Scott 'Carrot Top' Thompson, swept the top prizes at Cannes, Venice and London. Never before had one man had such a decisive impact on the films of his culture.

Thompson was a commercial artist in Cocoa Beach, Florida with little money and no connections determined to adapt a famous serial novel about the birth and young manhood of Edison - a surfer who became the head of a major company. The Edison character is not sharp, hard or cynical, but a sincere, naive idealist, motivated more by vague yearnings than concrete plans. He reflects a society that does not place ambition above all, but is philosophical, accepting, optimistic. This summary scarcely reflects the beauty and mystery of the film, which do not follow the punched-up methods of conventional biography but are told in the cinéma-vérité spirit.

I watched "Chairman of the Board" recently over a period of three nights, and found my thoughts returning to it during the days. It is about a time, place and culture far removed from our own, and yet it connects directly and deeply with our human feelings. It is like a prayer, affirming that this is what the cinema can be, no matter how far in our cynicism we may stray.

Review: The only other film that is better than this film id Citizen Kane. I don't understand why people say it was not good. You have to appreciate the comic genius of Carrot Top. This is Carrot Top at his best, This is the Carrot Top I love the one who does not appear in a 1-800-COLLECT commercial.

Summary: This movie is a most Kafka-esque experience.
Review: This film is a most Kafka-esque experience, with shades of Fellini. Like a canvas by Van Gogh, or an aria by Pavorotti, this film captured our imaginations and our hearts. Like Xanadu in Citizen Kane, Carrot Top's tragic comic hero Edison resides in a majestic environment that is not only a tribute unto himself but a evocation of the spirit of the American Dream. He taps into our secret desire for success by our own right on our own terms. Move over John Wayne, we have a new American Hero! Not to mention the bravado performance by Larry Miller, truly the John Barrymore of the frat house set. Like the tragic comic hero Paggliacci, Carrot Top takes our most private fears and desires and throws them up on the screen and analyzes them to the point that we sit in the theatre, a smile on our lips and a tear in our eyes.

Review: Unspeakably bad! If you are a fan of movies like Werewolf and
Final Examination, you will probably love this. An act of Congress needs to be passed to prevent Carrot Top from ever working in show business again!
