Rating: Summary: Delishful! Review: Witnessing her evolution from "Drunk With Power" through "I'm The One That I Want" to "Notorious C.H.O.," it's clear that Margaret Cho is a talent with depth and staying power. More than a stand-up comic, she's a legitimate one-woman show, a monologist if you like. I'd love to see her make the transition to "real" actress, because that's what she is. As for the "edgy" aspect of her act as demonstrated here...well, give the people what they want, but I hope one day she grows out of this, too. I would really rather listen to her describing her mother falling off a camel.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Review: Margaret Cho has been, for many years, like a great but unknown restaurant.. a movie like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Those who are in-the-know are in for great entertainment.. and the rest, well..This new show, a perfect sequel to "I'm The One That I Want," is a hilarious ride through such important topics as terrorism, sexual pecadillos, weight control, colonic irrigation and other timely points of interest. What separates Margaret Cho from your average teller-of-jokes is her sometimes shocking honesty. She is not afraid to put herself out there and let us all laugh about things that we probably all experience but are afraid to talk about. She doesn't pander to the crowd for laughs - she can practically talk about anything and find the lighter side of it to get an audience to laugh. I suppose after being laughed AT for the better part of her childhood, she did what most people are afraid to do - she challenged people to laugh WITH her instead. The result is an hilarious comedic journey and one that, especially for the price, is well worth the investment. YOU GO CHO!
Rating: Summary: Don't miss the DVD commentary! Review: This movie is great, but what REALLY makes this DVD worth owning is the priceless commentary by Cho's mother which runs over the entire length of the movie. I laughed almost as hard as I did at the movie itself. Anyone familiar with Margaret Cho knows her routines about her mother are hysterical & this shows that she's only slightly exaggerating. Great extra for a great DVD.
Rating: Summary: Put on your lobster bib and dive on in there... Review: Margaret Cho is a distinctive, unapologetic, and at times spot on talent that dares to go where few comics have gone before. I almost don't want to call Ms. Cho a comic. She's more like a Korean Karen Finley with a sense of humor. Racey? Oh yeah, I would find it hard not to see anyone blush at least once during this amazing performance. But thats the draw and talent that Cho encompasses. No apologies, no blushing. This is the perfect next step after I'm the One That I Want. Touching on the familiar topics of identity politics, sexuality, societal dislocation and of course Cho's Mom. (Who is interviewed at the start of the show, which is worth the price of admission itself. "Yes she's really like that.") Cho doesn't ask you to fasten your seat belt, warning of a bumpy night. Nope, here the safety bar goes down and your locked in to a fascinating and utterly enjoyable ride. And a high-colonic too!
Rating: Summary: Notorious C.H.O.=Clever, Hilarious and OUTspoken! Review: Margaret Cho is back and better in Notorious C.H.O. Once again her mother features not only in her monologue, but in the film during some extended interview clips with Mr. and Mrs. Cho (Margaret's parents.) Once again she delivers a variety of rants and raves on current affairs (September 11th--though briefly), sex (every imaginable topic is covered, and it's some of the funniest material in the whole film) and relationships (with your parents, a loved one and yourself.) I liked Notorius C.H.O. more than I'm the One That I Want, mainly because it went beyond Margaret's personal story. The issues she talks about affect all of us, in one small way or another at any time in our lives. She's not afraid to confront her personal issues in front of an audience, which is saying she has not only the courage, but the sense of humor required to "let all your stuff" hang out in front of millions of viewers. Hopefully some cable network out there is considering her for a show of some kind. Maybe a half-hour talk show on current issues, politics and that other thing, relationships! Her talent and worldview are unmatched in audacity and honesty!! YOU GO, CHO!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious, outrageous. . . notorious! Review: "Notorious C.H.O." is a concert film starring the outrageous Margaret Cho. The film begins with some short interview segments with Margaret, her parents, and fans. This prelude is an effective warm-up for Cho's stage performance. Cho starts off with an outrageous post-9/11 joke; she makes it clear that she's not letting terrorists stop her from loving life or from bringing others joy through laughter. From there she takes on a number of topics: pornography, straight sex, gay sex, eating disorders, media images of Asians, gay marriage, menstruation, and more. Her humor is in-your-face and often very political. She goes into graphic and hilarious detail about her own sexual adventures (including a trip to an S&M sex club): believe me, it's definitely not for the prudish or squeamish! Along the way, she performs some very funny characters: a Sharon Stone-ish dominatrix, a video store clerk, and (best of all!) her own mom. As funny as Cho is, I also find her performance to be often very poignant and ultimately quite inspirational. Cho is all about coming to terms with painful episodes from one's past and using them to learn and grow; she's also about celebrating diversity and making a space for those who, for whatever reason, feel left out or abused by society. She may make you scream with laughter (as I did), but she also may make you think.
Rating: Summary: Thank the powers that be for Margaret Cho Review: I saw Notorious C.H.O. live last October in Washington DC. It was barely a month after September 11th, and our girl Margaret opens the show up with how she "helped" the workers at Ground Zero, and it got funnier from there. By far the best couple hours of therapy I have ever gotten. Everyone must watch this!
Rating: Summary: CHOMENDOUS! Review: Margaret Cho is hysterical! Liked this one even better than her first-I'm the One That I Want. You've got to see this over and over!
Rating: Summary: The CHO must go on... Review: Margaret Cho once again hits the funny bone over andover again in a series of routines than touch upon the personal, the social and the political. I saw this film in the theater and left with a belly ache due to my uproaroious, uncontrollable laughter. There is something about the way Ms. Cho times her deliveries that plays the audience like a fiddle. Even if her style is not what you might consider your own, watch this film and she'll change your mind. PS: I do hope the animated short that opens the film is included in the final DVD. It's SO CHO!!!
Rating: Summary: The personal is political Review: I can't stop thinking about this film. Margaret brings up so many subjects that are simply not talked about in mainstream media. While I was watching the film I was laughing hysterically. I couldn't help but marvel at her expressions and her incomparable sense of timing. Not until the next day did I start to realize the importance of her, the film, what she has to say, what she stands for. Margaret is the voice for those in this country who question the status quo. And, the animated short that preceeds the film is just plain brilliant.
