Summary: Full of politically incorrect fun
Review: What a pleasant suprise this movie was! I was expecting a sappy teen flick, and instead found a dark, shockingly clever comedy. The movie pokes fun at small towns, white trash, religion, anorexia, death, handicapped people and more. The sensible part of me was properly offended, but I just couldn't stop laughing! This is a must see for anyone who has a dry sense of humour, or who finds bizarre situations and characters hilarious. I'm not a Kirstie Alley fan, but she was perfect in her role as an overbearing, glory-hungry stage mother. Kirsten Dunst was sweet in the role of a trailor park girl who dreams of making something of herself. The movie was even kind of weirdly touching in some scenes. My only words of caution: Are you... a) easily offended? b) very serious? c) a sweet, gentle person who has no hidden evil side? If so, don't see Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Otherwise, I'd highly recommend it!

Summary: Dead funny.
Review: Who said satire was dead? This deliciously wicked tale of small town girls vying for the title of Miss Teen Princess proves that it's alive and well, as several girls - and many of their mothers - go to extreme lengths to see that they win. Prime amongst them is Gladys Leeman (Kirstie Alley), a former Miss Teen Princess herself who is determined to see that her spoilt sexy daughter Becky (Denise Richards) will follow in her stilettoed footsteps down the catwalk of life. Her main rival is the sweet-natured Amber Atkins (Kirsten Dunst), whose own mother Annette (Ellen Barkin) could not give a hoot about the beauty pageant business, so long as her daughter is happy. Glady dismisses them both as trailer trash - Annette's response is a little less polite - but as the competition hots up and the stakes are raised, a series of suspicious accidents start to befall the pageant contestants.

There is some twisted humour at play behind this dark and savage satire, and within the bitchy context of the beauty pageant theme it all works wonderfully well. Kirsten Dunst plays her role to performance, as tightly coiled as her rival, Denise Richards is laid back.

But the real delight of Drop Dead Gorgeous is that there are lots of clever little ideas that work behind it too. That makes it a real rarity amongst so many comedies that go for unsubtle laughs and one track jokes. Indeed, the strength in character and casting goes down quite some way in Drop Dead Gorgeous, and even though the setting may seem foreign, the theme is universal.

A pursuit of naff middle class values, social standing and an unbending will to win, such things are played out to their ludicrous conclusion in hilarious fashion. Produced by Mel Gibson's own company, this a shrewdly judged film from the mogul in the making - with humour every bit as lethal as the action he is more often associated with. As sharp as a knife poised above your rival's back, this arch and clever story was surely one of funniest movies of 1999.

Summary: MISS BURNSVILLE SUPERB
Review: Miss Burnsville, was the best part of this movie. She was the best looking contestant, and the way she looked at Kristen Dunsts character made you realize she was the true winner. She should of never eaten the contaminated shellfish. The Miss Rose pageant was fixed in my mind. Miss Burnsville should of had more parts in the movie.

Summary: Drop Dead Funny
Review: Drop Dead Gorgeous is a brilliant satire on the American obsession that is teenage beauty pageants. Many satires miss the mark because they become so engrossed in the political message that they forget the comedy part - I am glad to say this is not the case with DDG. Rib-achingly funny in some places, particularly with one-liners, DDG is a real classic. Its satirical jokes are clever, and the acting is superb. Although I have seen Kirsten Dunst in several films before, this is the first one that opened my eyes to her acting talent. As protagonist Amber Atkins, she provokes sympathy from the viewer whilst at the same time continuing the light-hearted nature of the film. The other characters range from bitchy Becky (Denise Richards) whose rendition of 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' is easily the funniest scene of the film, to the Japanese parents who want to 'become more American', berating their Japanese daughter when she speaks in Japanese to them. ("Speak English, you little retard!") I have only given this DVD 4 stars, as the special features (or lack thereof) leave a lot to be desired. But the film itself easily deserves 5 stars.

Summary: Hilarious satire movie
Review: This was a funny satire type movie that kept me laughing and entertained throughout. It stars Kirsten Dunst as Amber, a young hopeful girl who is entering a beauty pageant. The movie also stars Kirstie Alley, Allison Janney, Denise Richards and Ellen Barkin. Alley plays Gladys, mother of Becky (who is also entering the pageant). The movie is funny from start to finish, very over the top in terms of humor, but it's hilarious. Almost every scene has something funny, or very subtle that you need to pay attention to in order to catch on. It's a fun silly movie that I've enjoyed watching again and again.

Summary: Tasteful? No. Funny? Yes!
Review: Disguised as a dumb teen comedy, "Drop Dead Goreous" is actually a clever, hilarious satire on beauty pageants and documentaries.

A film crew comes to Mount Rose, Minnesota to document the local beauty pageant for the Sarah Rose Teen Princess Pageant. We have the stereotypical characters: Becky, the snobbish, pretty, rich girl (a truly bad Denise Richards); her mother Gladys (Kirstie Alley), the fanatical, ex-beauty queen in charge of the pageant; and Amber Atkins (Kirsten Dunst), the trailer-park Cinderella. Fur flies (as does Amber's mother, the fantastic Ellen Barkin) and tempers flare. Contestants get blown up, knocked out, and knocked off. And that's just at the local level.

While clearly devoid of any tact, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" succeeds on its own terms, as a hilarious screwball farce with a brilliant cast (minus Richards), including Brittany Murphy and the wonderful, terribly underappreciated Allison Janney. It's not "Citizen Kane", but it's FUNNY!

Summary: Very Funny, Very Wicked Satire
Review: "Drop Dead Gorgeous" is a make-believe documentary that does for beauty pageants what "This Is Spinal Tap" did for heavy-metal music. A documentary film crew spends a week in the little town of Mount Rose, home to "Minnesota's Oldest Lutheran," which is about to host a "Miss Teen" pageant. It looks as though the spoiled daughter from the town's richest family (played by Denise Richards) has it all sown up until a girl from the wrong side of the tracks (Kirsten Duntz) decides to compete against her. But terrible accidents start happening to the people around this girl. What is going on?

This film has wonderful performances all around, not only from the teenagers but from the supporting cast. Kirstie Alley is great fun as the frustrated upper-crust mother with the thick Minnesota accent (oh yeah, don'cha know).

All in all, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" draws a bead on documentaries, beauty pageants, patriotism, and small-town life in general and is wickedly funny. There is some violence along with the satire, and the film deserves its PG-13 rating--small children would not understand why the death and destruction in this movie is so funny. For us grownups, though, this flick is a FIVE STAR HOOT!

Summary: A Comedy that is Actually Funny
Review: I loved this movie from the first moment! Alley has always been a favorite of mine (so has Dunst and Murphy and Denise somewhat) but they have really outdone themselves this time. The humor was so in the viewer's face, especially during the talent portion. I was really surprised that this teeny-bop feeling film hit the spot so well, but it was a crazy ride of the madness of beauty pageants.

Summary: You'll laugh your a** off!!
Review: This my ulitmate favorite movie!! It is so much fun! You have to listen and watch carfully to get the full effect of the comedy but it is so funny when you catch all the little effects. Especially when your from the 'mount rose' area of the country and you realize you really do talk like that. Which I do. So if you are fortunate to see this...You better pee first cause you'll laugh so hard you'll piss your pants!!

Summary: Don't waste your time
Review: As a "mockumentary" this movie fails miserably, in spite of the stellar cast. See Spinal Tap or Best in Show if you're looking for offbeat humor. *Disappointing* only begins to describe this pathetic piece.
