Summary: Very stylish and enjoyable goth/graphic novel adaptation
Review: I never saw this originally in '94 because I dismissed it as A. a martial arts film (and I hate those) and B. adapted from a comic (and I just can't get into those) and C. aimed at a teen/goth/punk audience (and I am way too old for that). What a mistake! Finally almost ten years on, a friend heard me say I really liked Alex Proyas' DARK CITY -- a neat sci fi film with a very different story but the same kind of dark fantasy look -- and couldn't believe I had never seen THE CROW and made me watch it.

I have to say that I really think this is a fine, well made movie and none of my preconceptions were remotely correct. The art direction is brilliant, with a wonderful and creepy gothic fantasy look, almost but not quite black-and-white, set in a mysteriously surreal "Detroit" that is in some kind of alternate universe from the real Motown. Brandon Lee is really charismatic and haunting in the role of Eric Draven, and not merely because of the tragic incident surrounding the film. He was real star material and just totally inhabits this part.

After seeing the film, I did read the O'Barr comic, which is very sincere and heartfelt, but I think the filmakers -- in what is a pretty rare event -- IMPROVED the plot and characters while keeping all of the angst and atmosphere. They totally honored the character of Eric and the basic idea of the avenger, the memories of his beautiful girlfriend, and sense of overwhelming grief that inhabits the graphic novel. Where they impoved the storyline in cinematic terms is in the treatment of the minor characters and villians. They really fleshed them out, and it enriches the movie and balances the storyline well.

Bookending the film with quotes from Sarah (Rochelle Davis), the little girl who narrates and observes much of the story is an example of a good idea that doesn't really exist in the comic, where the little girl is called Sherri and only appears briefly. Even more so is the expansion of the character of Top Dollar, who again is a minor episode in the comic and more of a grubby hell's angel/drug dealer -- in the film he has been transformed into a complex and compelling crimelord. Michael Wincott is simply amazing in this part, playing Top Dollar as a kind of depraved, satanic, renaissance prince, and clearly having a great deal of fun with this role, especially some wonderful and very clever dialogue. The very, very sick but quite sincere love story between Top Dollar and his psychic half-sister is the reversed-mirror image of the pure and innocent love of Eric and his fiance, a clever idea.

Wonderful music, great visuals, terrific acting...The Crow should NOT be missed.

NOTE: I bought the "Collector's DVD". Don't bother. There is NOTHING worth looking at on the second DVD, some production sketches and posters, nothing special. The director's commentary (on the first disk) is interesting to listen to ONCE, but you can get that on the single disk DVD. There is a smattering of extra footage, but nothing you will miss. Save some bucks and just get the one disk wide screen version.

Summary: I hate love stories...
Review: I hate love stories, all those yuppy Julia Roberts movies make me sick. When my girlfriend asked me what love story I'd sit down and watch, the only thing that came to my mind is The Crow.

Simply enough, anyone who doesn't like this movie is a dumbass. It's the wierdest love story I've ever seen, blending fantasy-ish components, a crime drama, and a love story all into one sleek package complete with some of the most kewl music ever made. And it all came from a comic book by J. O. Barr(I know, I have a copy of one of the original series back in the early 90s).

One quick final note: I've not seen "Salvation", but I can tell you that "City of Angels" is the most horrible sequel to a good movie I've ever seen. I now don't trust the name (without the late Brandon Lee) enough to watch any more sequels at my expense. When Salvation comes out on tv, I'll try to catch it.

Summary: The Crow packs a wallop
Review: I fell in love with this movie when I first saw it at a friends a while, while back. He said it was awesome and I really agreed. It has you by ever frame and its explosive, passionate, dramatic, and some times over the top, but in the end the bad guys always pay.

Set in an urban hell inviroment which looked really cool on big screen....

Eric Draven- " Is that gasoline I smell?.."

a black, gothicy type of film with cool rock music and one sexy Mrs. Eric Draven. The most disturbing image in this whole movie would have to be Ernie Hudson(the black cop) in his boxers and his shirt and his policemens hat on.....somen freakys going down. anyway I reccomend it. a pure adrenaline rush, man

Summary: Not enough can be said about this film...
Review: I know there are other reviews about this movie, but I have to add mine. This is my favorite film of all time, of any film. It has all the elements that a great film should have - it's dark and romantic; it has action, a fabulous plot, great characters, and an awesome soundtrack to boot.
What stands out for me most in this film is the incredible Brandon Lee, (R.I.P.), in what was his first and unfortunately last film with a major starring role. He is passionate and vulnerable and utterly believable as Eric, the murdered lover back from the dead to avenge himself and his fiance. His scenes with his young friend Sarah and police Officer Albrecht are touching and funny, and as well done as his physical fighting. Brandon was on his way to a bright career. The real life tragedy attached to this film only serves to make it even more haunting.
Just as a quick aside, the sequels are decent flicks, but nothing can compare to the original.
We all secretly long for someone to love us so deeply that their love transcends time and death. That is what speaks to me in this film. I recommend it 100 times over.

Summary: Very good and best in series...
Review: This is by far the only one in the entire series that is worth watching. However it is very good and stands by itself as a cult classic. The visuals in this movie are great the story is a very haunting one. Brandon Lee was taking from us too soon as this movie proved he was going to make great films. A great edition to anyone's movie library.

Summary: The Crow
Review: It is one of the MOST AMAZING films I have seen in along time!!! It has alot of heart and hummor which keeps viewers glued to the screen. All of the characters are exciting to watch and the storyline is easy to follow. The music is great, my favouriate tracks are 'Burn' by The Cure and 'Dead Souls' by Nine Inch Nails.

Brandon Lee will be missed, but at least he left us with a great movie which will never be topped in my opinion for its content and unforgetable characters.

ERIC DRAVEN IS SUCH A DUDE!!!

Summary: Brandon Lee's Best
Review: An enduring triumph for Lee, one that underscores the tragedy of his untimely death. Anyone who likes a good action movie with some heart will love this movie.
