Summary: Excellent music
Review: I do not like Halloween day so much, but I became to love this DVD title. Music is so excellent that I sometimes play this just to listen it. Sound and visual effects are great. I found that most kids coming to my home love this title too.

Summary: This is the best in entertainment I've seen in a long time.
Review: I just started thinking of this movie today and now I can't wait to go home and watch it again!! My whole family just loves it--from my 4 yr. old granddaughter to my 57 year old husband. It is so imaginative and exciting to watch. You can't predict what's going to happen next, you just have to watch and listen. The music's great, the animation is spectacular. I'd recommend it to every family.

Summary: WIDESCREEN VHS FORMAT PLEASE!
Review: The manufacturers need to produce a WIDESCREEN VHS FORMAT for us unlucky yokels who are not yet financially able to convert to DVD!!!! With the advent of the Widescreen format, there is no reason why viewers should be forced to sit through a substandard viewing of a movie in which the edges of the movie are cut off. You do not get to see the entire movie as the director intended it to be seen. Other than the full-frame format, this movie is excellent!!!

Summary: Violence?
Review: I know that films/television shows are easy targets for criticism these days, however the context of TNBC is different. These characters are not created as some malignant form instructing ways of violence. If anything at all, the film shows there are consequences to "evil" actions. Whether or not children can watch this film should be established through the discretion of the parent/guardian themselves. In terms of the movie itself, I believe the film's style and songs blended beautifully together the differences of the two holidays (Halloween/Christmas). TNBC also wonderfully captures the excitement of Halloween itself (If one believes in its celebration). It's an enjoyable movie with interesting characters. Finally, I cannot help but acknowledge that Danny Elfman's music is classic.

Summary: Great transfer, lousy extras
Review: I've always been a fan of Tim Burton movies. Tim Burton has a remarkably twisted imagination that will appeal to older children and adults alike. The DVD never looked better, the transfer is excellent. The 5.1 effects are well done - not as explosive as an action film, but for a cartoon its impressive. Elfman's score is appropriate: very catchy tunes, on the pop order and not too memomrable, but fitting in the movie's context very well. Very typical for the Elfman / Burton combination. The stop-motion is fantastic.

The DVD looses a star for being bare-bones. Great transfer, but the extras are terrible. Especially since the laserdisc transfer had a lot more going for it (commentary, etc.)

(Regarding the comments that it was too violent: a Tim Burton film is not a happy-go-lucky film for 4 year olds ala Disney. To me, it has the best qualities of a twisted kids' story, which is usually geared more towards 10 to 15 year olds. As an example, look at the poetry of Shel Silverstein, or animation classics such as Looney Tunes. They have a similar appeal, even cross-section appeal to adults. Tim Burton's films have always been like that.)

Summary: Genius and adorable Tim Burton
Review: Excellent movie: a masterpiece regarding the score, the creation of a completely new, different and fantastic atmosphere and wonderful characters. Tim Burton has a capacity of imagination and creativity beyond limits, he is a veritable artist. For those who think the movie is violent, I recommend they watch it again to capture the beauty and naivety of the Halloweentown creatures. I wished to rate the movie with more stars, but unfortunately, we only have five...

Summary: Not to jump on the bandwagon, but...
Review: To Edmund, Oklahoma...

If you saw a commercial for an animated movie that was said to be an "Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece" would you take your four (now 10) year old brother to it? Or, how about a Richard Donner masterpiece? David Lynch? David Fincher? You have to consider things like that. So, maybe TNBC is a little bit much for kids that young. I have to say, I could tell that from the commercials. If you're so concerned, do a little research. Maybe even go to the movie yourself first.

Also, I don't remember who said "Disney finally does horror...well, sort of," but that's not entirely accurate. It's hard to find, but Disney did a movie version of Ray Bradbury's incredible Something Wicked This Way Comes.

On to the movie itself. Danny Elfman's music is wonderful as ever. At first, I didn't really want to see this movie, even though it was from the mind of Burton. At 21, kids movies verrrry rarely appeal to me. But when I heard that Burton and Elfman were together again (big surprise, I know. Almost as shocking as hearing that Badalementi will be doing the music for Lych's upcoming Straight Story) I had to see it. And I was not dissapointed. I actually went out and bought a copy of it. It's dark and light at the same time. Funny, and a little spooky, in a childish sort of way. The music is wonderful. The visuals are amazing, even if the faces sometimes seem to jump from one expression to another. In short, a piece worthy of the names Burton and Elfman.

Summary: Excellent movie
Review: At a time where stop-frame is becoming a lost art, it is refreshing to see something so original, professional, and stylish. As far as our friend from Oklahoma is concerned in terms of it being "to" violent, I think that he misunderstands. It is not a movie that is directed towards very young children (ie. four). Older children and adults are sure to appreciate it.

Summary: Disney finally does horror...well, sort of.
Review: Where to start? Generally speaking, Nightmare Before Christmas is about misunderstood characters who may appear evil or bad, but really are brutally honest, i.e., true to themsleves and true to where they come from, which is a magical place called Halloweentown. With a name like that, you can imagine all types of characters like Oogie Boogie, the Vampires, the Three Witches, the Evil Scientist, et. al. (and my favorite trick or treaters: Lock, Shock and Barrel). More importantly, however, this is the story of Jack Skelligton and self-discovery. As they say, it isn't about the arrival, it's about the journey getting there. I cannot recommend this movie enough except to maybe very small children due to them seeing many of the characters as "monsters" that will scare them tykes when they are trying to sleep! There are so many different ways I enjoyed it from the best soundtrack ever (Thanks Mary!) to the funny and crazy characters to the journey that Jack goes through as he finds what it means to be the Pumpkin King! Well, what are you waiting for? Buy it already and stop reading this!!
