Summary: a must see
Review: i thought this movie had its funny moments but i did catch myself with a tear rolling down my cheek. this movie teaches you to love life and try to be free.

Summary: Dark Comedy at its best...
Review: This bizarre film is actually quite funny. I was first introduced to this film in 1984 and still watch it from time to time. Without giving anything away, Harold drives his rich family crazy with a number of hysterical suicide attempts - only to miraculously appear seconds later as though nothing happened.

Although not a mainstream comedy, this movie is tremendously funny and is a "must have" for your home collection.

Summary: Am I the only one who didn't think this movie was wonderful?
Review: Although I found this movie funny (the scenes focusing on Harold's "deaths" in particular), I didn't think it was appropriately labeled. To this day I always catch myself being confused when I see this under "comedy". Maybe it's just because I saw this movie for the first time in a psychology class when we were learning about social disorders, but I didn't catch myself rolling in the aisles for most of the movie. Don't get me wrong, this movie is definitely worth seeing, but not if you want to see a hilarious movie.

Summary: I pretty much agree with everyone
Review: It's been fun reading these posts by people who were so moved and entertained by this movie. I saw it when it first came out and have had Cat Stevens' songs in my head ever since. It's one of those personally affecting movies that prompts fans to quote from it, and my favorite moment after all these years is (as it is for some of these other writers) Maude flinging Harold's charm into the river, because now she'll "always know where it is." That was my first taste of movie profundity, and I've never lost it.

If you haven't seen the movie yet, you can probably read some of these posts and not have it ruined for you. There's so much to laugh at and marvel over in it, and of course, those songs. . . .

Summary: Delightful surprise
Review: I first saw this movie a few years ago, and when my friends described it to me as a "cult classic", I thought that I would certainly hate it. However, instead, it is one of my favourite movies of all time. This year, when I was in Europe, it was on television at 1:10am, and i stayed up to watch it, even though the entire thing was dubbed in German.

This is a wacky film, and i think it is one of those that you either love or hate. Even after all these years, it is not a relic of some "flower power" or "hippie" era, but stands the test of time and touches on themes that are still relevant to people nowadays, such as taking time just to ENJOY life, and not being too caught up in all of society's rules.

The acting is superb; the music is gorgeous - it's Cat Stevens, and it really fits in with the tone and the message of this movie; and if you want something different but fun, Harold and Maude is really worth a try.

Summary: One of my favorite films
Review: How can I get you to see this? I guess not everyone can love it, but everyone should at least try it out. This film has a cult following for a reason. Something snappy: "A feel good movie for people who don't like feel good movies."

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: UNCOVENTIONAL LOVE IS WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT AND THIS FILM
Review: THE LATE 60'S AND EARLY SEVENTIES WAS A GREAT TIME FOR FILM. WE STARTED SEEING NEW APPROACHES AND DIFFERENT IDEAS. HAROLD AND MAUDE IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS. ITS BETTER SEEING IT WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE ANY IDEA OF WHAT IT'S ABOUT. IF YOU HATED "YOU'VE GOT MAIL" YOU MIGHT LIKE THIS.

Summary: Put your teeth in the jar, Gran-Gran. Switch dem lights off.
Review: I really enjoyed watching this movie with my grandmother. It added an additional ... layer ... of discovery, if you will.

And Cat Steven's soundtrack is so good, I can almost forgive him for supporting the fatwa on Salmon Rushdie.

(Note to parents: If you're watching this one with your little squirmers, you might want to tell them that immolating isn't considered to be socially acceptable behavior. But trepanning your skull is okay, if properly supervised.)

Summary: It will change you forever...
Review: I don't give big 'inflated' reviews. This is because I hate to read one -and then get the film, and see how disappointing it really is. But in this film's case, I don't know how to describe it with words. It will make you feel alive in so many ways, you can't count them.

This film should be sub-captioned 'Question authority, question your whole life!' It is hysterically funny, tragically sad, and filled with soul. So many subjects are explored so deeply...after you watch it, you'll be astonished that they packed all of this in, without the movie taking 6 hours.

It opens your mind and your heart. You'll have entirely new points of view regarding religion, family pressure, intergenerational love affairs, death, societal position, and the meaning of life itself. Before I go too far with this, I'll stop. (like I said, I'd hate to dissapoint you in the end).

Suffice it to say that it will be in your top 20 films list for the rest of your life (maybe your top 10).

The only comparable films I can think of are American Beauty, Lolita, and Office Space. But they're quite different from this one, while exploring many of the same themes.

Its a "wow" !

Summary: That way, I'll always know where it is
Review: This, along with Casablanca, Citizen Kane, The Graduate, and The Hustler (and, guilty pleasure: Repo Man), is a movie I can watch over and over, and enjoy more with each screening. As others have commented, there are so many unforgettable lines and retinally-etched scenes: "I love people, they're my species", "Harold!, that was your last date!", the priest, the forearm, the wooden sculpture, and yes, the smiles. Maude's magnificent ability to enjoy life is a model and a treasure. I have shared this movie with my older daughter and her friends, and they love it, too. See it over and over again, and refresh your desire and ability to love and to laugh.
