Summary: THIS WAS TOO FUNNY TO BE A COMEDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: "The Original Kings Of Comedy" is probably not the movie you may be expecting. It is two hours of stand up comedy without a plot. I didn't see a single person in the theatre not laughing. This movie was HYSTERICAL, with no gross-out humor or weird antics. If you don't like to see movies as they are usually shot, see something else. If you are a comedy fan who is not offended by vulgar humor and raunchy sex jokes, this movie is for you.

Summary: The Kings are Worthy of the Crown...
Review: African-American comics have traditionally had a difficult time breaking into the mainstream. For every Eddie Murphy or Richard Pryor, there are dozens of performers like Robin Harris and Joe Torry whose sharp, biting humor flies just below the radar of many potential fans. With a record-breaking tour and successful concert movie under their belts, The Original Kings of Comedy can lay claim to being some of the best and brightest comedic talents, period. Regardless of the color of their skin.

Steve Harvey MCs nearly two hours of laughs that come at a machine-gun pace. His opening covers everything from the sinking of the Titanic, to the "country" ways of his audience to former NFL star Rae Carruth's brief flight from the law ("If you're runnin' from the law, why would you go to Nashville...?). D.L. Hughley steps to the mic next and delivers the weakest of the four performances. While some of his bits connect (such as how blacks and whites react differently to getting fired), he loses the audience about 1/2 way through. As a result, he turns his humor onto the audience themselves and finishes with a flourish.

Cedric the Entertainer follows with the best piece of the quartet. His musings on the proliferation of blacks in the game of golf ("We out there on the course barbecuing...") and hockey are just as stinging as his views on the "I Wish" principle and the concept of being a grown ... man. Bernie Mac concludes the show with a mostly funny, but somewhat mean-spirited assault on raising his sister's kids and sex over 40.

The DVD has some added features which really put this already enjoyable program over the top. Most notably are the bonus scenes, which include each "King" giving some exceptionally insightful background into how they struggled in obscurity to perfect their craft and who their biggest influences are. For hip hop fans, there's a video from the down south duo Big Tymers which features cameos from the Kings, as well.

A generation ago, comedy tapes and records were a significant part of many peoples collections. The Kings of Comedy give hope that we can return to that era when day-to-day drama wasn't taken quite so seriously and we could still laugh at ourselves...and more importantly, each other.

Summary: Can't get any better than these cats
Review: After a successful two-year run of the Kings Of Comedy Tour (I went when they came to Atlanta in 1998), they finally decided to make a feature film. With the addition of DL, you have the perfect chemistry for a successful comedy stand up show. All four are exceptionally funny, but it's Bernie Mac who steals the show. He's also the raunchiest of the four, which doesn't really say anything because all of them have R-rated material. So if you have a group of adults over at the house on Saturday evening, pop the DVD in and just sit back and enjoy!!!

Summary: Queens of Comedy...Can't miss
Review: Although I haven't seen The Kings of Comedy, I did have the chance to watch The Queens of Comedy on Cable. Monique's performance alone warrents the purchase. The other comedians were funny, but here spill on "How to bring the #$%@ out of your man" was just classic. Now I've been told the the "Kings" were off the hook also, so both together is just A MUST BUY !

Summary: An Hilarious Look Into The KIngdom of Black Comics
Review: Although this film is billed as a movie it's really a stand up comedy show starring Phenomenal Headliners Steve Harvey who MC's, DL Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Closer Bernie Mac. The show filmed is at the Charlotte Colosseum and additional footage at WPEG FM Power 98, backstage and viewer inserts are included. What makes this movie special is that all the comedians are targeting the same black audienence and are very different. Each comic complete with more good material than they ever use are funny. Steve Harvey localizes the Carolina Panthers football team and makes reference to how old school music involed love while hip hop is sometimes nonsense. DL Hughley's punch lines come as fast as an automatic weapon and does lots of observational humor into black culture. DL has more jokes than anyone else on the stage. Cedric's skit humor is more relaxed than Hughley and one could argue that he should have been the opener instead of DL just for tempo reasons. Cedric is hilarious but the audience seems slightly tired out after Harveys second performance. Finally Bernie Mac the Headliner of headliners for the evening gives what is a strong and shocking performance involving the disobedience of children and lackluster parenting of today. Mac is really doing a Broadway type one man show. Yes he's that good. Many great comics would have failed with his material but Bernie pulls it off with a strong finish. Black to White comparisons are made often in the show by each comic but they are more comparing than insulting. I would love to see a movie like this with white comics just because this movie has left me curious as to what it would be like. If you've never been to an arena size comedy show this Spike Lee Joint must be lit!

Summary: Garbage
Review: As a stand-up comedian, I love stand-up in all its forms and will give anything a chance. My girlfriend gave this to me for my birthday and I was excited as I had heard good things about this video. I like the Steve Harvey Show along with Cedric but not the Bernie Mac show or the Hughleys. I have seen Hughley do stand up previously and only remembered that he cussed a lot. That is an understatement. After watching the so-called "kings" all I got out of it was that these guys know their four letter words. The only time I laughed was during a couple of spots in Cedric's act. He was also the cleanest comic. If you took the cusswords out of most of these guys' acts their sets would be reduced to about 5 minutes a piece. This proves they had no material whatsoever. I'm white but I love black comedy. One of my best friends is a black comedian. If this was to be a gathering of great black comics it should have been Sinbad, Louis Ramey, Dave Chapelle, Rondell Sheridan, and Mark Curry. Bottom line, don't buy or rent this video!

Summary: Simply put: THE BEST
Review: As you might have read from other reviews, this is not a movie rather than a stand up comedy film. I dare anyone to watch this and not find it funny. If you don't laugh, then you don't have a sense of humor at all. The show is about the concert tour of the same title that was the 2nd highest grossing tour of the year. Steve Harvey is the MC and provides his own touches of brillance throughout the show. His ability to relate to people on all walks of life is evident from the moment he takes the stage. He warms up the crowd for each comedian but the crowd doesn't need it, since you barely regain control from laughing so hard from the last joke you heard. D.L. Hughley is great in this, although I, personally, think that his set could have been alittle better. I had just seen his last comedy special before the movie, so I was alittle jaded. Next is Cedric the Entertainer. The man is awesome. The way the he accents his jokes with phyiscal style is brillant. To top off the show is Bernie Mac. Simply put, he steals the show. I could not stop laughing when he was on. To not own this DVD is a crime. I will be the first in line to get it when it arrives. You should do the same. I hope this helps.

Summary: Don't miss this one by any account
Review: Being black and British I wasn't quite sure how good this might be. I thought that Martin was funny but probably too long.Tommy Davidson was funny but too short. Seeing this in the cinema house I found this film was long but not not long enough - if it had been any longer I'm sure I would have ended up wetting myself with the amount of side splitting humour on show here! I was especially looking forward to seeing Bernie Mac doing stand up as I'd only seen him in mostly comic roles - "Friday" and "Above the Rim" stand out in my memory. Of course, D.L Hughley was known to me from BET's Comic View and I initially thought if he's first on stage the others can't be better than him. How wrong could I be! Steve Harvey compered the show superbly setting the atmosphere (if you know your soul music you really are in for a thrill too) - each subsequent comedian displayed high quality comedic genius. Despite watching this with my homies (which always is a catalyst for having a good laugh) this show stood up on its own merits - I have never laughed so much with tears in my eyes. And it's a good thing that I had 3 or 4 seats to sprawl over. By the way, I'm known as the most serious one of my friends but even I came out of the show with my body wracked with pain! Can't wait for this DVD to be released in the UK. C'mon Amazon.co.uk get your act together please :->

Summary: More like one king, two princes, and one sucker
Review: Bernie Mac is undeniably THE king of comedy in this movie, his set smokes all of the others. That's not to say that the other's aren't funny. D.L. Hughley is really funny, especially when talking about how black people and white people view work. Steve Harvey sort of MC's the concert and does like two 10-15 minute sets that are decent. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that I really didn't think that Cedric the Entertainers set was funny at all. It's a good thing Spike Lee didn't open the film with him because I probably would have shut it off. The funniest part of the whole movie is hearing Bernie Mac's views on child raising, it's just simply hilarious. Bernie comes from the old school of child rearing where it's ok to give a kid an @ss whippin'. Anyway, this is definitely worth buying just for Bernie Mac's set alone, but D.L. Hughley and Steve Harvey do a good job as well...a good addition to any comedy collection.

Summary: Maybe it's just me....
Review: But, I didn't find this movie funny at all. I sat and watched every minute and never once laughed out loud. This was a major disapointment. Steve Harvey's material was tired and old. Cedric "the Entertainer"'s set was flat. The only moments I found remotely funny were all contained in Bernie Mack's set. And there weren't nearly enough to make up for the other three "kings". Anyone who is thinking of wasting their time and/or money on this film would be better served renting Eddie Murphy's "Delirious" or any of Richard Pryor's old shows and watch a couple of true kings at work.
