Summary: So far so good....
Review: Bought this today as a Christmas gift but decided to check it firsthand out after reading all the bad press on other Apex DVD models here on Amazon Reviews.So I ran it through some standard tests, like reading DVD's, CD's, and Kodak picture disk. It even read my Sony Mavica .jpg files. So far so good. I never even opened the DVD's instruction manual (stnd procedure for me) so I found everything to be pretty easy to use straight up or to quickly figure out. I only used the s-video connection so I can't speak to performance through other types of connections. Curious if it would perform on older TV's with only RF Input

Summary: Simple and Reliable comes at a great price!
Review: I bought this DVD player at a ridiculously low price, lower than the one listed above and at first was very skeptical because I thought for sure the performace wasn't going to be comparibly great. After 8 months of use I can say that I am actually looking to get another one. What I like about it is that it's very simple and easy to use, throw out the manual and everything else and just hook up. It reads DVD's and CD's for MP3 use. I use it in my bedroom with my flatscreen and it caters to my needs of just watching a DVD here and there and not wanting to spend tons of money to view those movies. If you are looking for the same you will most likely be more than satisfied. Here's some more detailed info:
*EASE OF USE: Again very easy, a child could even use this, there isn't much to it. *PERFORMANCE: It's been working like clock-work so far. No problems with any aspects of its performance after 8 months. *NAVIGATION: Easy slim remote makes it easy to navigate. As well the fact that it doesn't have a lot of functions/features makes it easier to navigate. Menu's very simplistic. *LOOKS: Mine's in black, a little bulkier than your new almost-flat progressive scans. I own a COX decoder for the movie channels and it is the exact same size so I place it above. Don't buy it for the looks. *CONS: If you're really into electronics and snazzy items and looks etc, DON'T BUY THIS. if you want a plain, simple, and reliable DVD player to play your movies on and in the end be happy with the performance and the fact that you paid so little, THIS IS FOR YOU! The other con obviously it's not progressive scan and for this price I wouldn't expect it to be. As mentioned I use it with a very high res flat screen and the picture is flawless, so I have no complaints. NO CONS really, just depends what you're after. Apex may not be Sony but it has proven just as reliable for me. If you're like me and skeptical about the brand and the price, don't worry and buy with confidence!

Summary: 4 months and dead
Review: I bought this on Sept 11, 2004. It died on Jan 29, 2005.
My compliments to Apex for getting it to work past the 90 day warranty so they don't have to repair it. Even if it were within the 90 days, good luck on contacting them through their website since almost everything clickable on their homepage causes some kind of error with every one of the three browsers I tried.
I don't mind they don't have an 800 number but it turns out their service number from the US is to Canada.
No more Apex for me!

Summary: You get what you pay for :)
Review: I bought this unit about 2 years ago and it has still been working fine for me. The unit makes some noise while it's playing DVD's (a low buzz) which is kind of annoying but usually is drowned out by the movie playing anyway. It plays a multiple array of media types which I was impressed with considering it is a newer brand on the market and was super cheap. It is very simplistic and electronically would of course not compare to higher end DVD players like the ones built by sony etc. However, for longevity, price and satisfaction with its' performance, I give it four stars.

Review: I got the Apex AD-1201 in December of 2002. It is not hard to set up when you read the directions. I got a few pros and cons to say. PROS: The player is easy to use and understand. The price was cheap, being only $59.95 at Circuit City. I like the MP3, Kodak picture CD, and JPEG CD feature it has. I also like the zoom feature it has to read small text in a movie. CONS: I don't like the remote control in some ways. To navigate through the DVD menu, you have to press the green "Shift" key to activate the navigational buttons. The player looks cheap and kind of fragile. The player will sometimes make a loud vibration noise when the disc rotates fast in the drive. The tray also makes a loud noise when you open and close it. It skips on some DVDs (not even scratched or warped) like my "Terminator 2: The Ultimate DVD" and "The Abyss." NOTE: I tried out these movies in my Playstation 2 console, no problemo reading the DVD inside. My player has not broken yet after a year and five months of operation. Future shoppers, get a brand that is more reliable and well built if you want a DVD player that can last for many years like Sony or Panasonic. You will not be sorry. Good Luck!

Summary: Worst electronic item I have ever used in 20+ years
Review: I hated to give this one star. That is much too high a rating for this abysmal piece of garbage. I have been a collector and user of a whole array of electronic items for over 20 years. I kid you not when I say that out of any electronic item I ever owned in 20+ years (I am 36 years old) this is below and beyond the worst piece of junk ever. I knew something was wrong when I carried the unit into my room and the door opened and ejected just from a little bit of gravity, from being tilted downward a little bit. Not a good sign. Then I had all the little pixel problems and buzzing motor noises...plus any given disc would only boot up about 2/3 of the time. The rest of the time it would claim no disc loaded, which was funny since there the disc was right there, in the tray. Within a week regular CDs would not play at all, and within a month, DVDs would only play about 10% of the time (i.e. after 5-20 tries "booting" them). Well finally after about 2 months the unit stopped functioning altogether, it won't read any disc even after dozens of tries. As far as I am concerned this company should never be trusted, even on the higher end products. I will never buy anything from APEX again as long as I live, and have spread the word to all my friends.

Review: I own 3 APEX DVD players that I purchased from Amazon over the past 2 years and have nothing but good things to say about them. For what you spend, the quality and features are top notch. It sounds like the other reviewers received bad units, I am sure Amazon will replace them and they will be happy.

Summary: NOT IMPRESSED
Review: I RECEIVED THIS PRODUCT FOR CHRISTMAS IN 2002, BY THE MIDDLE OF NEXT YEAR I STARTED TO HAVE PROBLEMS. I EXPERIENCED DVD MOVIES FREEXZNG IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOVIE AND NOT BEING ABLE TO DO ANYTHING. THE WHOLE THING FROZE. THEN IT WOULD NOT READ ANYTHING AND TELL ME THERE WAS NO DISC. IT WOULDN'T LOAD AND IT WAS LOUD. TO GET IT TO WORK I HAD TO MOVE IT AROUND. WHEN I TRIED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT THE COMPANY GAVE ME A HARD TIME ABOUT IT. THEN I COULD NEVER CONTACT THEM AGAIN. THIS PRODUCT IS CHEAP AND NOT WORTH $5.

Summary: Too Low End For Me
Review: So far I have found three problems with this unit. First, it is smaller than a standard DVD player, which means you cannot easily stack other units on top of it. Second, on my unit the disc tray cover does not close automatically. You have to flip it closed by hand. Third, I have had the same problem that the other reviewer talked about regarding the picture pixellating occasionally. I decided that if I see it do that one more time, it's going in the trash can. I have zero tolerance for that and will not compromise on picture quality. I bought this unit mainly because I heard that Apex was good for playing many DVD-R discs that my Philips player couldn't handle. I chose this model because it has the chapter forward and backward buttons on the unit itself. Then I purchased a model AD-3201, which is much better than this one. That is the one that I will probably end up keeping. In summary, I would not recommend that someone buy this unit if they were looking for an Apex DVD player. I would say get the AD-3201 if you can find it. It is rare and hard to find. It is a unit where you can set it for multi-region and turn off Macrovision copy protection via a secret menu that is not described in the owner's manual. The only place you can find that model is on [internet store]
