Summary: haunting, gut wrenching and demanding masterpiece!
Review: wow! was i floored by this film. i rented the vhs tape the day of it's release and could barely get thru it; it upset me terribly and initially i could not follow it. i returned it that night very frustrated. weeks later, i found that the images were still with me and i had many questions left unanswered. after reading all the comments above, as well as all the critical reviews as posted on the internet, i decided to try it again. i just purchased the dvd and it truly is incredible. the acting by all, the musical score, the cinematography, etc. are all breathtaking and unforgettable. the digital transfer as well as the ac-3 surround sound are also the best i have seen to date. i watched it 2 times back to back and i don't think i will ever forget it. it leaves such an impression on your heart and mind-one that will stay with you forever. do not pass this film up-it deserves a second chance in video. it is a film to be cherished and savored over and over. thank you, oprah, for having the courage, vision, and resources to see this film completed. wow, i am still reeling from watching it. the best darn dvd in my library to date. i am so glad i followed my instincts and gave it the 2nd chance it so richly deserved. go for it-you will never forget it. thanks for reading this and sharing with me.

Summary: One of the greatest films of all time
Review: The first time I saw this film, I left the theatre deeply exhausted. It was a very emotionally draining experience, but, in the best way possible. Beloved is a film with extreme power and challenges one to think. With many layers to it, Beloved is a film that many people can enjoy, extracting different feelings and morals from it, as long as they are acceptant to something different, which many, many, many people aren't. After the first time I saw Beloved I wanted to see it again, which I did, and found that I realy didn't understand many things in the film the first time I saw it! To this day, I feel there is much more to discover. In writing reviews, many people seem to be ignoring a major reason as to why Beloved is so good: Jonathan Demme! His direction is masterfull! I can't imagine any improvement, and almost every other film I've seen, boy can I sure think of improvements! He captures several moods in this movie, so well, I was sucked in so quickly, I forgot about my surroundings. I feel, and hope many others do, that Beloved was MADENINGLY snubbed by the Academy! It almost seems like they didn't even watch it! Kimberly Elise was incredible! Thandie Newton WAS Beloved! Please, support films like this. Let them know how you feel. Give Beloved the great reputation it deserves.

Summary: this was the best movie of the century.
Review: I have read the book beloved three times and had difficulty making all the scenes click into order but after seeing the movie every thing made since. I knew the content would be graphic so I prepared myself but I still could not contain myself from crying. Ive never cried at a movie but being a mother and seeing sethe do what many of us might have made me realize not only true love but total immorality and the realization that the two go hand in hand made the whole three hours remarkable. If you have not seen this movie you are cheating your self out of perfection.

Summary: Its not about slavery, its about MOTHERHOOD
Review: When I first ventured to the movie theatre to see beloved, I was expecting a typical movie about slavery: emotional, yet already done. What I saw was something far greater. Beloved is an incredably intense movie that is all about the love of a mother. It is all about love and intensity. Nobody should miss this movie. Simply watch it without any preconceived opinions and admire the beautiful acting and direction.... and make sure that there a box of tissues nearby

Summary: IT WILL HAUNT YOU LONG AFTER THE LAST FRAME IS DONE.
Review: I chose early morning when the children were off to school to watch this film. Three hours, a heavy topic I wanted to watch undisturbed.

I found myself not so much caught up as gently being taken by the hand and invited into the story. I cried many times, wondered, and ached. And when the movie was finished I was able to let it go.

A good film I thought, not as impactive or wrenching as I imagined it, I was thinking as I rewound the tape. But I was so wrong. Beloved began creeping back into my thoughts as the day wore on. I watched Oprah's show that day and saw Sethe every time Oprah's face appeared on the screen.

That evening I wondered about her, wanted to know where Denver was, what John D.'s life had come up to. If he and Sethe found a peace.

That night I laid in bed hearing Baby Sugg voice as she preached upon her platform of stone. I heard Sethe answer questions that were never asked in the movie. I saw the wide eyed drooling Beloved over and over again. Realized the next morning the people of Beloved was haunting me. That I would never forget them and that they would revisit me time and time again.

Beloved is not the one/two punch like Color Purple but it's power is more so that it stays with you, within you long after the veiwing is done. This is the beauty, this is it's truth.

I know there was much talk about the character Denver giving and oscar performance, but to disregard the character's Beloved's performance as secondary is a slight. They were equally wonderful, as were everyone in the cast. They all gave their hearts to their roles and I applaud them all.

Beloved with stay with you forever. Be prepared to make a permanent space in your heart for it.

Summary: Beautiful, heart-breaking, thought-provoking
Review: I loved this movie because it was intelligent, emotional, fierce, heart-breaking. MOrrison's story forced me to confront with open eyes and heart the horror that was slavery in America. The images will stay with me for a long, long time. Shame on the Academy for ignoring this masterpiece.

Summary: SETHE'S LIFE WAS ONE I WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH.
Review: At first i was cool about the dog and the other pathetic stuff that showed. Then when Sethe went through all those traumatizing situations i really became scared for her and her daughter. There are times as the movie was going on when i felt like storming out of the living room, realizing it was only a movie i'd just shrug and return to my sit.The Director and the entire crew did produce a quality movie.

Summary: A brilliant movie.
Review: This movie packed an emotional wallop. I mean wow! I just got finished watching it. The sheer magnitude was beyond me. After reading the other reviews, I can agree that this movie is disturbing. Being a fourteen year old white male, the only thing I can say is what can you expect, slavery wasn't very pleasant. While wtching the movie, though, you must get by all of the disturbing images and listen closely to a truly complex story. Some may not like this movie because of it's complexity (and the ending), but if you plan on watching the movie, you need to watch it at a time when you will have no disturbances since it is a very hard movie to follow. The ending can only be explained in one way: Sethe's, the main character, tragic story is the kind where the only happy ending is the fact that it is over.

Summary: Riveting, disturbing and powerful
Review: Unbelievable! I read Toni Morrison's book but I never expected such an explosion of visual metaphors and images. The average person may have difficulty comprehending most of the action but I encourage everyone to try to find the meaning underneath the horror.
