Summary: Hands down, the best remake of all time...
Review: Actually, I would argue that this is one of the greatest films ever made. Enough time has passed for us to get over the shock of McBride / Carson / Gere's desecration of that French classic (which was all about breaking taboos in the first place). Hopefully this re-release will bring this funny, passionate, beautiful film to a new generation of filmmakers and film buffs who heard somewhere that Tarantino actually prefers this version. He does, and he's right! Where the original was remote, cynical, and yes, pretentious (seen it lately?), this one is romantic, exciting, and intensely felt. It's a creative, complete reworking of the original material which manages to transpose the story from Paris to Los Angeles, substitute Eno and Glass and Jerry Lee Lewis for that anonymous cool jazz, replace Bogart with the Silver Surfer, etc. And it all works! It does all this without losing one iota of the dashing spirit that made the original so memorable, and yet like the few great remakes it's totally its own film. I'm telling you, folks, the McBride "Breathless" is the GREATEST!

Summary: a sexy and the best movie with Richard Gere ever!
Review: I am a huge fan of Richard Gere, and this movie was the reason for it. He is so great that you wonder why he didn`t won a oscar for the performances. The movie is about a man(Jessie) who have a big dream, and that is to come to Mexico(not only his dream) with the woman he loves(Monica) a french woman. Only a little problem, on the way to Mexico, he shot a cop, not with intention to do it, but with an accident. The chemistry between Valerie Kaprisky and Richard, is much more intensive then ever Julia R. and he had. And not to forget, Richard never was as sexy as in this movie, and Valerie is pretty good looking too..... this movie has it al, erotic, drama, action and humor.

Summary: No wonder it was on sale
Review: I bought this DVD at Best Buy for something like $5, based on the notion that Richard Gere is, in reality, a fairly nice guy. There are really only three reasons to watch this film, however: 1) the music, 2) Valerie Kaprisky's boobs, and 3) the last scene in which Gere's character picks up a gun and is going to be ventilated by the LAPD.

Gere plays a lowlife who conducts a crime spree from Las Vegas to L.A., including (accidently) killing a California Highway Patrol officer. Naturally, the more crimes he commits, the more the girl covers for him, lies for him, hides him, and participates in the offenses.

Unfortunately, films like this just glorify the most negative type of behavior, and make it seem cool and sexy. By projecting that kind of notion, it becomes nothing but recruitment propaganda for the prison system.

Summary: Gere does a repeat of American Gigolo
Review: I enjoyed this movie, not great but not a bomb...all the way thru it I kept thinking of American Gigolo. Same type character that he did so well in that movie he reprieves in this movie. The French actress was delightful and very convincing.

She was on and off again on the thrill of going out of the box and her attraction for Gere.

Gere was convincing in this part. Believeable movie.

Summary: Should be called "Brainless"
Review: I had the misfortune of watching this garbage the other night. This film is nothing more than a vanity piece for Richard Gere's already inflated ego who spends three quarters of the movie showing off his body, while one quarter of the movie banging the sexy Valérie Kaprisky.

The synopsis is Gere plays a lowlife fugitive named Jesse who is wanted for killing a cop. While on the run he encounters an exotic French beauty named Monica (Kaprisky) who joins him on their escape to Mexico. I won't spoil the ending, but it's quite lame.

This already cliched plot gets weaker throughout the movie. There's no intelligent reason why these two idiots are together-their relationship is solely based on lust. Jesse is an immature thug who steals cars and money, reads comics on the side, and sings cheesy 50s pop songs. Put aside Kaprisky's bad acting for a moment and you can't understand her English half the time, she's nothing more than eye candy.

If you want trashy Hollywood sex appeal, this movie has it (along with Gere's equally brainless "American Gigolo"). If you want quality acting and storytelling, this isn't for you.

Summary: Richard Gere is sensational
Review: I loved Breathless the first time I saw it and I have watched it many, many times now. The main reason is Gere's performance. It may not be his best but it's his most original and spaced-out performance of his career. The movie itself is quite entertaining, but no masterpiece. It never takes itself too seriously and mostly depends on the charms of Gere to keep it going. The ending is the best part, where his character seems to have nowhere to go and everything is closing down on him, and his only answer is to escape to his fantasy world and of course; sing the opening lines to Jerry Lee Lewis's Breathless. Another plus is the music, for this is the only film I know of that has Presley's Suspicious Minds playing in the background.

Summary: One of the five greatest films of ALL TIME........22 Sep2001
Review: I'm a serious film buff and I agree with many of the experts assessments of the truly great films. But, without doubt, this film proves that they can get it so wrong, for this is a truly classic film. Like the great classics, it captures so completely, a particular period in time, a particulat theme. In the case of Breathless, youthful love and all its consuming and eternal extremes is so sublimely captured, so subtely, I'm left wondering why this work of art, this masterpiece, has been overlooked for so long. Like all great works of art that were dismissed in their day, however long it takes, they eventually get the recognition they deserve. At the time, it was sacriledge to even attempt a remake of the classic French film director, Jean Luc Godard, let alone his favoured 1961 film, "A bout de Souffle" (Breathless). This film goes way beyond the original and captures the eternal energy that can come to exist between two people, so well and without the pretence and self absorbtion that hamstrung the original. Without doubt, the experts have missed the point with Breathless, this film needs to be absorbed from a spiritual perspective. Don't be fooled by the street wise hustler with the jazzy clothes, the pretty girlfriend and the sometimes moral bankruptcy. Beyond the aesthetics, lies the real essence of this film and it goes much deeper than a series of smart lines scripted for such films as Citizen Kane. Breathless is, without doubt, one of the five greatest films of ALL TIME.

Summary: jean-luc godard's vision was killed.
Review: Jean-luc godard's first major motion picture, BREATHLESS, is still known to this date for being one of the most influential films of all time. It has a serious plot, but very comedic undertones and that's what this director and these actors could not capture. They took everything that was unique and original in Breathless and still would be to this day, and they painted a soap opera picture over it with over-dramatized acting and unnecessary suspense.
whoever made this is a moron.
