Summary: Mob rules
Review: Calogero is very close to his working class father. He also looks up to Sonny (Chazz Palminteri), a local thug. But, after witnessing a murder at Sonny's hand, he is left in conflict. He becomes the child of two extreme fathers each with different ideas for their offspring's future.

A BRONX TALE is an impressive directorial debut for star Robert DeNiro who presents this story in a place he is comfortable, in a world often defined by Martin Scorcese (GOODFELLAS). Period music is used to help re-create the Bronx, New York in the 1960s. That same music also supports the conflicts involving race relations that appear late in the film.

After he refuses to finger Sonny to the police, Calogero, or "C", is taken in by the guys. With names like JoJo the Whale, Frankie Coffeecake, Eddie Mush, Jimmie Whispers and Tony Toupee, they force C to grow up too quickly. Like any child he makes good and bad decisions. Based on a one-man play written and performed by Palminteri, the story spreads a little thin but remains cohesive.

The story does start to lose ground when C begins cross-racial dating. Too much pressure is put on the teens, especially the amateurish Jane, and the film briefly falls on its back, marred by wooden dialogue and ridiculous conclusions.

There was a time when DeNiro was a reclusive actor but around the time of this film, the prolific guy we now see replaced him. His performance here is respectful on both sides of the camera. This was an early DVD release so only offers a trailer as bonus features and the video transfer is muddy in the darker scenes.

Summary: "now you's can't leave"<HAHAH YEAH!!!!!!!
Review: Casting for this movie was amazing. The plot was amazing. The biker scene was one of the best things i have ever seen in a movie. but then "jane" came into the picture...i dunno her real name because i really don't care...she can't act at all. she sounded like she was reading right off the script. Colugero and Jane's "Romance" seemed forced. Other then that...this is one of the best movies i have ever seen

Summary: sheer masterpiece
Review: Closely relating to my upbringing, definetly the greatest movie of all time in my books... i have watched this movie with 5 other people and they also give it the 5star salute as well... blended with continuous suspense and drama, the mix of love and moral and ethnic standings, this epidemic is not only for viewing pleasure but is an educational account of life on the streets.

Summary: This sleeper classic deserves another chance
Review: De Nero directs this classic and classy film about two men competing for the soul of a youngster. It faithfully re-creates the look and feel of the 1960 right down to the Do-Wop music of the era. The casting couldn't be better. Look for a small but touching part played by Joe Pecsi.

Summary: Ethical Mobsters - not the best mob movie - no turkey either
Review: De Niro directs this. It is not perfect, but it is old and the budget is some restrained considering. It is nowhere near anything like Goodfellas, but works like Carlito's way. This film has smarts but it is old, independent and the film transfer is not perfect. Not everybody in this film is a professional actor, including some of the leads, making it a mixed bag at times, but none the less has its moments, and all these mobster movies are about those moments, and to be honest this can stand along side something like Casino from Scorsese no problem because of that.

Chazz Palminteri who you know from The Usual Suspects, wrote the story about a boy who grows up between his straight family and the crooked mafia, learning the ropes from both, it is all about choices and consequences, and as others have rightly noted, whole heaps of morality minutes, as killer gangsters try to tell a kid how to hit on a girl, there are some background stories to this plot that work out quite well, not as soppy as let's say Steven Spielberg started tugging your heat strings with John Williams standing in the background with a violin, but it ain't as if Joe Pesci's Tommy would be teaching us how to dance if he didn't have a gun.

It is worthy of any collection, but just don't go breaking out this DVD as the best mob movie ever. It is a long shot away from the classics but isn't as garbage as say Sly Stallone trying to do the mobster thing. Now there is 1, 2, 3 star territory.

Summary: Excellent.
Review: De Niro's got a real gift for directing; I wish he'd do it more often.

This is a moving story about a son's conflict between the two men he looks up to. I particularly like the fact that the gangster isn't all bad, and the father's not a saint.

Beautifully-crafted, flesh-and-blood characters. If you like movies about real people, you'll love this one.

Summary: A Bronx Tale- I'd go for Godfather, Goodfellas and Donnie B
Review: Despite what other reviewers have said, this film is average and very mediocre at best. It seems to be a film with a split personality., unable to decide wether its a mob flick, a movie portraying teenage terrorism and thugery or a film based on racial prejudice. Rather than focus on one main story this film seems to lack any real plot and at no point during the film did I really think to myself, brilliant, directing, cinematography or story line. Some of the scenes are embarassing to say the least and acting is very weak. This fil also tried to be very Goodfellas like, however it failed because the music used was unable to compare with that used in Godfellas, the plot is far weaker, the voice over used, rather than enhance the film as it did in Goodfellas slowed it down and simply made the fil worse. Apart from DeNiro (who is brilliant as always) the acting is weak and average at the best and why they never used Pesci through out the film rather than the one small scene at the end is a mystery to me. This film is not anywhere as good as some people seem to believe. If you want a classy, old fashioned, traditional mob flick what the Godfather- its a classic. If you want fast, well done, well directed, gritty, more down to earth mob action with superb music watch Goodfellas and if you want something in the middle with a strong story line and superb acting- watch Donnie Brasco. All three films beat a Bronx Tale hands down and I would rather watch each of them twenty more times than sit down and watch a bronx tale for the second time.
