Rating: Summary: What's not to like. One of the better baseball movies Review: (& I'm a Yankee hater). You have the great Gary Cooper in peak form, Mr. "boy next door", & an oh so cute momma, & oh so cute poppa. Theresa Wright is hot & even "The Babe" is thrown in. This movie is done with a lot of pathos & we know Gehrig dies, but it is a reel classic. You can hardly miss it as it's on cable very often. It was done shortly after Gehrig death. It's too bad "The Babe Ruth Story" done shortly before Ruth's death could not have received such fine treatment.
Rating: Summary: Courage and Heroism in Perfect Form Review: "The Pride of the Yankees" is without a doubt one of the best baseball films of all time. Why? Because it isn't just about baseball. It's about a real person seeking that seemingly impossible American dream and capturing it, only to lose it all too soon. Cooper plays Gehrig with so much heart in this film, that the movie almost seems unreal due to the fact that Gehrig was such a good person, both as a human and as a star athlete. There are few professional athletes in the world who show so much character and so much love to others as Gehrig did. He faced death with honor and courage. He was and is a true hero. If you're looking for an athlete for your children to look up to, pick the "Iron Man of Baseball." This film does exceptionally well in capturing the heart and soul of Gehrig. It is a great family film and I highly recommend it. Gehrig might have been in Ruth's(and later, DiMaggio's)shadow, but he was so much bigger than these guys. He was honest, hard-working, and approached people long after the cameras were gone. Add this one to your collection. It's a keeper, even if you don't know the difference between a baseball and a ball of yarn.
Rating: Summary: A great movie with an ugly colorization Review: "Pride of the Yankees" is possibly the greatest movie ever made on the topic of baseball. I'm a sap when it comes to Gary Cooper and after seeing this film I became more and more interested in Baseball. I'm a basketcase at the end of the movie when Coop makes his farewell speech as I'm sure are millions of other guys. Of course a lot of the film's greatness is lost due to the annoying coloroization but see it anyway if you havn't yet. Colorized or not, it's still a great film.
Rating: Summary: One of the best baseball movies out there. Review: "The Pride of the Yankees" can be easily called "The Lou Gehrig Story". I've always enjoyed baseball, and love watching movies about it, too. This has always been one of my top picks. Babe Ruth himself is a cast member in this picture. Where else can you see him personally in a film. This is probably the only one. You'll enjoy watching this Oscar-nominated classic about a true baseball legend struck down by a tragic illness. Lou Gehrig will always be one of the best baseball players of all time next to Babe Ruth.

Rating: Summary: Don't colorize a great B&W classic Review: 'Pride of the Yankees' is definitely one of my all-time favorite movies and would normally rank an easy five stars. BUT somebody had the misguidance to release this DVD as a COLORIZED title. Why, oh, why? Don't they realize that most movies made in black & white look better and much classier in black & white. Leave it alone for goodness sakes! That aside, Gary Cooper's performance as baseball great Lou Gehrig is among the best of his career. Teresa Wright is every bit his equal as his devoted wife. Babe Ruth himself even gets to act a little bit in the film. Director Sam Wood, who also gave us such masterpieces as 'A Night at the Opera'with the Marx Bros. and 'Goodbye, Mr. Chips'(not to mention co-directing 'Gone with the Wind'), balances the sentiment, humor, and drama just right. And yes, the ending tugs on your heartstrings like few movie endings can. The people at HBO Home Video have given us some beautiful B&W DVDs such as 'The Best Years of Our Lives' and 'Wuthering Heights'. I just wish they had been as generous with this title.
Rating: Summary: Pride of the Yankees Review: Arguably the greatest sports movie of all time. A great movie for all,I would have to think that you would be very hard pressed to find a more enjoyable movie. You will be a fan of Baseball and Lou Gerig. Be ready to laugh, cry, and feel good.
Rating: Summary: Ted Turner Strikes Again Review: Being from Atlanta, Georgia, it's normally hard to decide which I like less--George Steinbrenner's Yankees or Ted "the Mouth of the South" Turner. In this case Turner wins hands down. Lou Gehrig's story was a sports classic: the All-American son of immigrants, he became arguably the best player of the nation's pasttime while leading an exemplary life and courageously facing the fatal illness that now bears his name. Such a man's memory deserved the fitting tribute that once was "The Pride of the Yankees," a film I gladly would have given 5 stars to. Instead, Mr. Turner decided to avenge our Atlanta Braves' losses to the N.Y. Yankees in recent World Series in his typically crass manner--HE COLORIZED "THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES." If there is any possibility that this DVD will be reissued in black and white, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT for that glorious day. At the very least you may be able to get rid of the bland, pasty colors by adjusting your television set. In the meantime, I have a request for Mr. Steinbrenner. Should our Braves eventually defeat the Yankees in the World Series, please do not purchase the rights to "Gone With the Wind" in an attempt to bleach it into a black and white movie.
Rating: Summary: BUYER BEWARE Review: Buyer Beware! This is a COLORIZED movie, and a poor one at that. Gone is any sense of character, drama, tonal texture, or depth of picture that we remember from the original. The manufacturer didn't even give us the opportunity to select either Black & White or colorized versions, an obvious possibility in DVD.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Movie Can Still Be Saved Review: Colorized !!! Truly wonderful how stupidity is allowed to function and flourish over and over again. There is one unique way to save this masterpiece on DVD. By working the correct sequence of color cables on the output panel of your DVD player, you can indeed induce B&W with no damage to your picture tube. Not just B&W, but a sharp picture representation beyond anything you have ever seen before! Happened upon it by accident and it saved this timeless classic from the scrap yard of Turner Classic Blunders. Turned a disgusted viewer into a relieved one. Try it folks...May be worth the effort.
