Summary: Superb!!!
Review: Love and Basketball is a cute urban story about two childhood basketball players enduring the ups and downs and in and outs within their romance. The plot and cast are well perfected and thought out in the film because the chemistry between the cast is very real.
Monica (played by Sanaa Lathan, a fairly new actress, The Wood) lives by the game of basketball when she first meets Quincy (Omar Epps, Higher Learning, The Wood), her new next door neighbor. Monica's first impression on Q is not a good one when he bruises her during an encounter as children in a game of ball.
Their first attraction is innocent as kids, but quickly fizzles out as they argue and fight continuously as youngsters. Their romance begins again their prom night after fighting their relentless attraction to each other for so long.
Their romance grows even more as they arrive to the beginning of their careers at college. Quincy and Monica both deal with their personal and basketball struggles, but their relationship suffers, especially when Quincy finds out that his father is cheating on his mother. Also towards the ending of the film Tyra Banks makes an guest appearance portraying Q's fiancé.
Love and Basketball is a well written, emotion grasping and thought provoking film. I give this film two thumbs up and a full six stars. I feel this is one of the best urban films out there that is suited for all audiences. This film does not contain a lot of profanity nor sexual content. Not only is the movie phenomenal because of the awesome cast but so is the soundtrack. The whole package of the film is superb! I recommend this film to everyone. Please if you don't already own this film this is on the top of my must have list!

Summary: the best!
Review: Watch this movie! if you can believe it, Sanaa Lathan learned to play basketball for this role. She kicks a--! 80's kids will appreciate the soundtrack. They have great chemistry and the story is believable--better than most hollywood films.

Summary: admirable, but......
Review: I love Sanaa Lathan and I wish her the best as she pursues her acting career. Best wishes to the dirctor, Tyra Banks, and the many up and coming African Americans involved in this project.

But I did have several problems with this film. First, Omar Epps is too short to be a basketball star. They did terrible casting here. In this movie, that black guy from "Far From Heaven" plays an adulterous husband for at least the third time (see also "Waiting to Exhale" and "What's Cooking?"). How does someone get typecast like that? Third, the plot is choppy and the sequence where they fall out makes little sense.

I am disappointed that this DVD had no foreign language subtitles. Think of all the non-English-speaking basketball fans out there who could have benefitted from a subtitled or dubbed film.

Finally, (not that this is its fault as its the first movie) replace "basketball" for "rap" and this movie and "Brown Sugar" are the exact same films. Hollywood is really trying to squeeze a book out of black folks who want to see romance movies with us as the lead characters.

Summary: A Great Date Movie
Review: In choosing a movie to see on a date, men and women often argue profusely. A considerable number of men feel compelled to opt for the sports movie, while an equally substantial amount of women choose the type of film men dread most- the chick flick. By definition, a chick flick is any film that focuses on things such as emotion, sentiment, and romance. In other words, the things most men find insufferable. So what is the best thing a man and a woman can do to compromise? New Line Cinema's Love and Basketball is a highly enjoyable movie for both, men and women, because it is a chick flick that revolves around sports.

Love and Basketball is brilliantly written and directed by Gina Prince-Blythewood. The film, in keeping with the basketball theme, is divided into four quarters. The first quarter begins with three 11-year-old boys playing basketball in a driveway. Another 11-year-old comes along to play. When the newcomer removes the baseball cap she's wearing, the others realize that she is a girl. "Girls can't play no ball," yells Quincy. "Ball better than you," replies Monica. Monica then proceeds to outplay the boys, until Quincy shoves her down and gives her a bloody check, leaving a scar that will last forever.

The second quarter takes place during Quincy McCall's (Omar Epps) and Monica Wright's (Sanaa Lathan) high school years. Quincy is an All-American basketball player that every college coach in the country wants. Monica is a star player herself, but many coaches are turned off by her attitude. Quincy and Monica have grown up together and are very close friends. With Quincy's parents often fighting uncontrollably, he tends to climb out his window and in through Monica's window to sleep on her floor. The second quarter ends with Monica and Quincy revealing their true feelings for each other, and the revelation that they will both attend the University of Southern California.

The third quarter takes place at USC. Quincy is an immediate sensation on the basketball court. Monica struggles to adjust to college basketball. The two continue to date and appear to be very much in love. As Quincy gets more national attention, however, the pressure begins to mount. Then, he finds out that his father ( Dennis Haysbert) has been unfaithful to his mother (Debbi Morgan). He decides he no longer wants to have a relationship with his father, the man he once wanted to be like. This puts a large amount of strain on Monica and Quincy's relationship, and they ultimately break up. Quincy soon decides to leave college and turn professional. Monica and he will not have any contact for several years.

The fourth quarter shows Monica being a professional basketball star overseas. While she is extremely popular, she misses home. Basketball, once the biggest thing in her life, is no longer fun. She returns home to work for her father's bank.

Meanwhile, Quincy is playing for the Lakers. He tears his anterior cruciate ligament, and his career is put on hold. Monica decides to visit him in the hospital. It is the first time they have seen each other since Quincy left college early. She finds out that Quincy is getting married. She still is very deeply in love with him, though. Will she find a way to win back his heart? As the film's tagline says, "All's fair in love and basketball."

The film Love and Basketball is a very romantic movie. This relates well to the female audience, as most women like romance. The relationship between Quincy and Monica is very real, and many people can probably relate to it. Monica and Quincy grew up as friends, eventually confessing their love to each other. This is something that many people experience.

Love and Basketball revolves around the sport of basketball. This makes it viewable for many men. A high percentage of men do not want to see a romantic movie. However, revolving the romance around a sport makes it viewable for many men.

Love and Basketball is a very enjoyable movie for both, men and women. It's combination of emotion, romance, and sport makes it a winner whether the viewer is a male or female. Final Grade: A-.

Summary: Infatuation Between Two.
Review: Love and Basketball is a powerful love story between two kids that grew up with each other, loving basketball, and soon to find out each other. Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) wanted to live the life as a basketball star. Monica had to show everyone that even as a girl she could accomplish her dream. Many of her friends and family did not believe she could do such a thing, except her next door neighboor Quincy. He did not have to work much, he was born with natural star potential. As their life goes on through out the movie they struggle to make their dream of being a star come true. Yet, little did they know they had to deal with their feels towards each other. This movie captured my heart right from the beginning. It is so moving and emotional. Definatly 5 Star work!
