Summary: Great combo
Review: I got the SD-V391 as a replacement for an old VCR that we used to play my son's video's. The combo is attractive and works really well. The remote is simply use. The picture quality is great and the sound is crisp. My only complaint is when you want to watch a DVD you have to remember to push the play button for the unit to recognize the DVD or re-insert the DVD even when the DVD selector switch is set to on. This can be a problem if someone else is using the DVD player who is not familiar with the unit.

Summary: VCR Recording Poor
Review: I got this unit and the hookup to my tv went smooth. Playing DVD's or VHS tapes worked fine. The recording on VHS tapes was VERY POOR. Since that is what I do with my VCR, record and watch later I need one with a better quality. So I boxed up and the machine and I am sending it back today.

Review: I had an issue with space, so I decided to try the combo model. I am a fan of Toshiba products and despite reading some negative reviews, I decided to try the product. Overall, I was pleased. It's easy to hook up and operate. However, I was displeased with how cheap the remote is. It's very light weight and doesn't seem like it take a bit of abuse. Other then my disappointment with the remote, I haven't had any other problems (I've only had my machine one week).

Review: I have been shipped 2 of these units. Neither one worked as the DVD draw would not open. I called Toshiba and they did not seem at all surprised. I've done well with other Toshiba products but would hesitate to get anything from them going forward.

Review: I have had this model for about a 9 months.
The VCR makes better than expected recordings. I don't use this much but have no complaints.
DVD functionality is flawless from my experience.
The Remote blows though. There is not thing that I can't do with it, but the layout is awful and non-intuitive.
I do wish that the unit could display the elapsed time counter on the unit with out also displaying it on the screen. My old JVC did this but this one forces the display to both, or neither.
If not for the remote and the display, this would get 5 stars.

Review: I have two other Toshiba DVD/VCRs in two bedrooms and I wanted to buy one for the living room, so I naturally went for the Toshiba. The unit played fine for the hour that I had it connected, but unfortunately, Toshibia re-designed the counter display and I don't like it. The tape/DVD counter display only shows in minutes instead of minutes and seconds. When I tried to record a tape, the number 1 was displayed for a minute, then it switched to number 2, and stayed at number 2 for another minute, instead of counting 1:01, 1:02, 1:03, etc. Yet, when I pressed "Display" the on screen display shows minutes and seconds. I want to see minutes and seconds on the counter too. That's the only reason why I returned it.

Review: I NEEDED A PROGRESSIVE SCAN MODEL SO I UPGRADED FROM THE TOSHIBA COMBO I ALREADY HAD...ABOUT 40 MINUTES(LAYER CHANGE) INTO THE FIRST FILM, THE PICTURE FROZE AND SKIPPED...I UNPLUGGED THE UNIT AND TRIED AGAIN AND EVERYTHING SEEMS OK NOW...BUT MY CONFIDENCE IN THIS UNIT WAS ERODED BY THIS INCIDENT...AMAZON HAS AGREED TO TAKE IT BACK WITHIN 30 DAYS, SO I'LL SEE HOW THINGS GO...DON'T THESE ELECTRONICS COMPANIES REALIZE THAT THEIR BRAND NAME IS AFFECTED BY ANY PRODUCT THEY MAKE...DOES TOSHIBA ACTUALLY THINK THAT I'LL BUY A TV FROM THEM IF THERE'S TROUBLE WITH THEIR DVD PLAYER? Review: I purcahsed the Toshiba SD-V391, knowing that it has a high rate of mechanical problems. However, if you read the reviews for other manufacturers DVD/VCR combos in this price range, you will find similar complaints about the unit malfunctioning. Perhaps this happens with less frequency if you purchase a more expensive machine, but I don't have the money to spend on a high end home theater system. So I ordered the SD-V391, along with an extended service plan (which I recommend for just about any piece of electronics that you purchase).I hooked the unit up in no time at all, and it was very easy to set up electronically as well. My TV is fairly new, but does not have audio/video jacks. I assumed that I would have to use the RF modulator that I had laying around, but surprisingly, it was unneccessary. The machine plays DVDs and VHS tapes just fine with only the basic TV and antenna connections hooked up. The picture is amazingly sharp and clear for such an inexpensive unit, and I'm glad that I spent the small bit of extra money for the progressive scan, which the SD-V291 does not have. All in all, I think that it was a sound investment, and should the unit fail (which as I said, most of the lower end combos seem to do) then the $20 I invested in the extended service plan was money well spent. I would recommend this unit to anyone!

Summary: Toshiba SD-V391
Review: I purchased the SD-V391 for my son for Christmas. I selected the Toshiba because I felt that it was a better, more reliable brand. The day after Christmas he called to tell me that the unit had captured the DVD and would not eject. He finally found that by unplugging the unit, it would reset itself and he could then remove the DVD. I contacted Amazon who was wonderful. They immediately shipped a replacement which I received in two days. It works great. Other than the disapointment of a defective Christmas present and having to wait the extra days and then ship the defective one back, we are happy. In reading the other reviews, I see that quite a few have had the problem of the door not opening. Come on Toshiba, if you want to maintain a good reputation, you must do better.
