Summary: Good overall, but with limited functions....
Review: This dvd player provides excellent sound and picture quality but lacks of multi-function like other dvd players offer. It doesn't play cd-r, DVD-R or DVD+R, MP3...... Basiccally, it can only play DVD movie, CD, and CD-RW. Keep that in mind when you planning to buy this.

Summary: An expensive paper weight
Review: I've owned this player for about two years and at first I loved it but just recently I started having problems with it. Long story short the power supply died and I'm not going to pay to ship it across the U.S. to C.A. to the only certified repair shop in North America. I had DVD's stuck inside so I just removed the 7 or so screws and removed the cover. I was able to remove my DVD's and I then proceeded to smash the insides with my foot out of pure frustration. As seen in the movie Office Space :) DO NOT PURCHASE THIS ITEM!!!

Summary: Will never buy a HK DVD player again
Review: Worked out of the box. Have had several problems with this unit. Freezes, sometimes won't read disks that other players do. Had about 10 hours of play on the unit and it just died. Powered up with the Standby light, but could never get the unit out of standby. Repair for the unit is in California, I live in North Carolina. Not only that, there are about $100 worth of DVD's I cannot get out of the drawer! Piece of JUNK!

Summary: WHEN it works, it's great.
Review: I never thought I would have made such a bad purchase when I bought my HK DVD 5. The unit is in for repairs more than it is playing DVDs. The worse part is that practically no one in America is qualified to repair these things so you have to ship your unit half way across the US to get it fixed (at your expense). Mine just stopped working for no reason at all. I eventually found out that the power supply went bad, after owning it for 14 months (the warranty was over). Strictly from a warranty / repair viewpoint I will never buy HK again. I purchased a Panasonic DVD player while my HK DVD was in for repairs and I swear the picture is just as good if not better.

Summary: Harmon is great, but this unit has serious quality issues
Review: Or maybe I'm just cursed with the DVD5. I'll be on my fifth one now. The extended warranty was the best part of the purchase. Harmon has some great stuff and I own 2 AVRs and thought I would get the same bulletproof reliability by spending the extra money for their DVD player. They know audio, but they have a lot of improvements to make on this unit. The first one would just freeze up in the middle of a movie or even while in the menu of the DVD. This required have to completley shut the player off and turn it back on (is the DVD5 running windows?:) The second one I was given didn't even work out of the box. It wouldn't even turn on. The power light would come on, but that's it! The one after that sounded like a blender grinding ice when it spun at the higher speeds for DVDs and wouldn't even play the DVD (It did play CDs though, again good audio:) Now the fourth one I thought was going to see me through, but now it too is not turning on also. Again, the power light is there, but no response from the front controls, remote etc... Maybe the lemon law covers this. If this one is unrepairable, I'm going with another brand and paying at least 60% less. Seriously, don't buy this unit even if you are drooling for it like I was.

Summary: Over rated
Review: I bought this machine with the highest of hopes. It worked well, not great for two months. Then it stopped working. There is only one place in the US that is qualified by Harmon Kardon to repair it. They are in California and not cheap. After repair costs and shipping I could have bought another DVD player. I bought my Mother a [less expensive] DVD player for X-mas. It had equal quality and more features. Plus if it breaks after two months I'm only out [$$].

Summary: High End Electronics
Review: If you want the best, Harman Kardon usually delivers. This DVD player is great, CD'S sound great. Make sure you put the disks in correctly, that has been my only grip, my eight year old has caused me to have to take the cover off a time or two.

Summary: The Harmon Kardon of DVD Players
Review: This is a well-done DVD player-changer. It also plays CD's and CR-RW's. The audio is superb, just what you'd expect from Harmon Kardon.

Summary: Defect right out of the box from 6ave.com
Review: High expectations on the unit when it comes right out of the box and is being attached to an HK110 AVR. Plop the Shrek disk in, and hoping for nothing but net but alas nothing but disk error, incompatable disk and skipping - unfortunately not the disk. At times the reader would try to scan "forever" but alas the error reappears. Seems HK should provide much better out of the box quality - perhaps this is just an isolated defect but being the first one we have purchased who knows. Apparently there were reader problems when moving from a one to a two disk set. It does not play cd-r format although advertised that it did. Lots of features and fun along with the fun I go through doing an exchange.

Summary: A second to none unit
Review: I have replaced a Sony DVP-9000-ES unit for the HK DVD5. I have been using DVD players in my system since day 1 and I have had most of the Hi End units. The HK DVD5 does exactly what it's meant to. I use a Pionear Plasma TV & the DVD quality is outstanding, even better than Pionears own units. I am running a Denon AVR5800 amp. This will be replaced in November with the HK AVR8000, which quite frankly blew the Denon away. This system is dedicated to the movie enthusiast that will only settle for the best: I have had Cyrus, Arcam, Krell, Linn, etc. The HK won hands down for me. However you will need to spend @ liest £5000 on speekers and wire. I recomend B&W Nautalis 804x2 805x2 HTMx1 & Signature SCMx2 mainly because thay R ausome and work well for music as well. Hope that this helps someone.
