Summary: Just plain bad - a big disappointment
Review: Normally if I buy a movie, even if I don't really like it I'll keep it to look at again in a couple of years but with this one I knew no matter what, I'd never want to see it again.

The filmmakers obviously had great intentions. A little world where being gay didn't matter at all to anyone. Your high school crush on your straight best friend who really wished he could return your romantic love because your friendship was so strong, affectionate townsfolk, a beautiful setting.

But jeeeze. The two leads are basically duds with no chemistry at all. Ayre Gross can be an engaging actor but here he really fizzles. I found myself not caring at all about the love story component and focused on the guys best friend with whom Gross had been in love. At least he was moderately appealing. Who cast this movie, a heterosexual male? If I could rate it Zero stars I would. If you must see this, rent it before you buy it. Mine is in the trash.

Summary: Whining Queen
Review: I like everyone else in the film except for Henry, the New York artist. I can't see why someone would fall in love with him. Watch this film again and count just how many times he whines! He is a whining drama queen. He has a terrible attitude. Almost every time he appears in the scene, he is unhappy about something. He whines or he wears that look on his face. Sure, the old lady who treats him like a grandson nags sometimes, but she's nice. Look at Henry's face when she talks to him. I find him extremely obnoxious. He makes me want to fast forward when he appears. He whines to everyone in the film. He whines his friend in New York. He's almost abusive to her. She doesn't owe him anything, for Christ's sake! He whines to the school teacher, his high school friend, the Indian guy, and so on. A great romance makes you fall in love with the characters, but I can't even stand Henry. There must be better ways to portray this character. However, the director and the actor failed to make Henry a likable person.

Summary: Nice Story but No Closed-Captioning for the Deaf
Review: I love watching movies like this but I was disappointed when I found out that it didn't have caption or sub-title for the deaf and hard-of-hearing audience. So naturally I had to do a lot of guessing when I watched the story unfold, but still...I was missing a lot when I couldn't understand the dialogue. So just beware.

Summary: Best gay movie ever!
Review: I have to say that this was one of the most enjoyable, touching movies I've seen. It's refreshing to see a gay- themed movie whose plot doesn't revolve around sex and betrayal for a change. Now if I can only find out where this town of "Eden" is!

Summary: Lovely and gratifying - Encantadora y agradable

Summary: really really nice....if a bit far-fetched
Review: An unlikely story in an unlikely place. This is the story of a man who has run from his earlier life, run to new york to be a painter and to be himself, a gay man. When his grandfather falls ill, he returns to the small town where he grew up, only to find the guy he pined after still there.

Don't think of the unlikeliness of the story and you will find yourself quite enamored by this film. It has a nice plot, the characterisation is beautiful, the film is funny, romantic, sad at times....the perfect mix, it seems....

The verdict? It's not the most brilliant film ever, but it is very nicely written and for the most part well acted. It's a nice movie, that's all I can say about it, I rather enjoyed watching it, even though at some point, you know exactly what will happen.

Summary: One of the best love stories.
Review: Of ten films we viewed while on vacation, this was the best. A wonderful story of love between friends, love of family, and romantic love. Fantastic. The scenery/setting was beautiful, and the photography was first rate. You will love it, and you will be tempted to show it to your family. It is a wonderful example of a real life love story between two gay men and their straight community. Finally reality the way it should be.

Summary: Crap is King
Review: I purchased this video on sale from Wolf, expecting something great. The reviews were breath taking. However, After two hours of some jerk running around the country side, and with some Indian, with a dour expression, learning how to cook, and some old friend he went to high school with, that may or may not had been his lover, I just knew that the video was better then five hours long, or so it seemed. It never ended.

I had just viewed "The Car Man" before viewing this dud. In only one hour and twenty seven minutes, without saying a word, Matthew Bourne conveyed more then this movie could ever say in telling a story.

The director or the writer evisioned an America that they would like to see, and indeed should be, but is not, and I wonder if it will ever be.

I removed it from the VCR and put it right were it belonged, in the trash. After all, why keep something I will never view again.

All I can say, if you have to see this video, rent it, don't buy it.

Summary: Pretty good, except for.........
Review: No one likes a sweet, romantic, upbeat gay love story more than me. So when I started hearing the positive " buzz " on Big Eden, I got pretty excited. I found the setting of the film to be charming, not to mention beautiful. The local characters were quirky enough to recall memories of Northern Exposure when that show was at the top of its form. And the story was cute enough even when it treaded in, somewhat, predictable waters. No, the problem I have with Big Eden is in the casting of its lead characters. Arye Gross as Henry is a capable enough actor, but Eric Schweig in the role of Pike has the acting talent of a zombie-like robot. But even this is not my problem with the film. As a gay man I like to see lead characters who are a little better looking. I know this sounds superficial, but if you're a gay man and you've seen this film, on some level, you'll agree with me. When Henry and Pike moved in for the films big kiss, I asked myself, "Where are Hugh Jackman and Antonio Sabato Jr when you need them"?
