Summary: Great movie- totally sharp dialogue
Review: What a pleasant, funny movie. This film ran the gamut from vulgar to poignant, and from mindlessly hysterical to thought-provoking. I thought Lisa Kudrow and Lyle Lovett were both excellent. Christina Ricci was really sharp and delightfully trashy, and the film is chock-full of great one liners and zingers. The Opposite of Sex was everything a well-written, intelligent sex comedy should be, and fortunately, everything that American Pie was not.

Summary: Ricci is peachy!
Review: Ricci aside I thought Lisa Kudrow was a delight playing the oppisite of her well known ditzy blonde "Friends" type cast, which helps her to not become to much of a type casted actress. She does have range. I fully enjoyed this movie. I loved the characters, the offensive (to many) script, the well balanced comedy mixed with drama. This film moves you, makes you laugh, think, and truly has you wanting to reach into your television to strangle some if not everyone. Christina Ricci "She's the human tabloid." is all attitude and no graduate as DeeDee Truitt a 16 year old girl that refuses to grow a heart of gold even for us the veiwers. Thats cool we see that type of stuff everyday in the movies. After her stepfather kicks the bucket she decides to go and live with her brother. He, who is moaring his lovers death welcomes her. One might say that was a huge mistake on his part. She does little more than ruin his teaching career, steal his new boyfriend, gets him involved in a gay sex scandal involving a former student where he teaches (thus, the reason for his almost termination), okay what else... steals his dead lovers urn containing the mans ashes. Oh and thats just the half of it. Let's finish this... "The Oppisite of sex" is what DeeDee wants. SEX involves relationships, deceases, pregnanies and other complications in ones life. Who want's that? The film also addresses the survival of the species topic. It's true if we didn't love sex (complications aside) we would have died out aeons ago. Good move on God's part. This is a movie that can be enjoyed by adults that aren't easily offended.

Summary: SUCKs with a capital SUCK
Review: It's billed as a comedy, but somehow it's just not very funny. The funniest part about it is the fact that you're actually sitting there, subjecting yourself to this. A 16 year old girl runs away from home, seduces a gay guy, exploits everyone she knows, kills the father of her baby... and you're supposed to laugh. I spent most of my time shaking my head in disgust, wanting to reach out and strangle the girl, and wondering who could possibly think it was funny.

Summary: A movie that sticks with you (if you like comedy black)
Review: It's saying something about a movie when a friend asks you for a recommendation in 2004, and 1998's "The Opposite of Sex" is one of the first things that pops into your head. Christina Ricci - in her first real adult role - rips the paint of the walls with her performance as Dede Truitt, a one-woman hurricane. She wreaks havoc here in everyone else's life, starting with half-brother Bill, played by the always excellent Martin Donovan (see, among others, "Insomnia," in which he plays Al Pacino's doomed partner).

In fact, for all the attention garnered by what was essentially Ms. Ricci's very successful coming out party, the real news here are the excellent turns by Donovan, Lisa Kudrow (playing about as far from Phoebe as one can get) and Lyle Lovett. Mr. Lovett proves her that he doesn't need Robert Altman to transfer his charisma from his musical performances to film. [He had been essentially an Altman 'house player' up to this point in his career.]

The script is sharp and witty. We've got Don Roos (as writer and director) to thank for that. I'm a little perplexed by Mr. Roos' career since that point - 'Bounce' (a disappointing Affleck/Paltrow outing) came out in 2000. He did have a critical hit with 2000's TV summer replacement 'M.Y.O.B.'

Roos has proven himself to be a great writer who attracts quality stars and directs them to impressive performances. He does have 'Happy Endings' in production right now with Ms. Kudrow and other talented actors. As far as I'm concerned, his success with 'Opposite of Sex' will compel me to see anything that he creates.

Summary: Great DVD for a Great Movie
Review: "The Opposite Of Sex" was arguably the wittiest and most subversive independent film to come out of 1998. Christina Ricci is the protagonist and the narrator, but it's Lisa Kudrow whose one-liners pretty much steal the show as Lucia (pronounced Loo-sha... a mispronunciation which is her characther's pet peeve). Ivan Sergei is the eye candy, and Johnny Galecki is the reductive gay semi-hustling stereotype, but it's Martin Donovan whose subtle performance really stands out among the male leads.

The DVD is a treat for fans of this movie. You get 5 deleted bonus scenes, and you can choose the option of watching them with or without director Don Roos's commentary. (One in particular -- an inspired exchange where the gang checks DeeDee into the hospital -- makes you wonder why it was ever edited out). This is a great DVD for your collection and a good value for the price.

Summary: The opposite of great
Review: If you like your films to be fast food with extra fries, if you live in a trailer perhaps, or drink lots, perhaps get into fights and have the police around, swear like a trooper, didn't do too well in school, shout to your friends at the other end of the street, buy books at the supermarket, wouldn't know good dialogue from bad/great acting from not so great, think that gay men just need the right woman, think that vegetarians secretly lust after bacon sandwiches, think that National Enquirer is a serious newspaper... get this film because YOU ARE IN FOR A TREAT.

Summary: Cutting Wit, Good Cast (and, even a funny "Friend")
Review: Christina Ricci is marvelous as the sarcastic narrator of this witty, sly little film. Although the plot has a few not-so-plausible glitches, in my opinion, the cast, including Lyle Lovett and Lisa Kudrow, make the film a worth-while endeavor. Some of the one-liners in this movie are lost if you only give it the once over. It's comedy that remains true to the characters; its character sketches that are worth fleshing out; and its multi-dimensional so it satisfies the audiences who may view it multiple times and discover tid-bits they missed the first time around. Intelligent and engaging, it should have found a broader audience; it definitely has a broad appeal. It's not only worth owning, it's worth loaning to friends and family who may, just by looking at its packaging overlook it, but will watch it because you asked them to. They'll thank you later.

Summary: Just Wickedly Funny!
Review: The keyword to this film- wicked. Here, we enter the mind of Deedee Truit (Cristina Ricci), a teenager who just comes into the lives of many people and just wrecks the wits out of them. But she does have a lighter side, and it does show up at the final stages of the film.

I love gay movies. This one isn't a purely gay film- it really focuses on what love really means, and you just can't help but get a little mushed up at the final scenes.

Lisa Kudrow is extremely funny in this film. As usual, her witty one-liners will get you to laugh so hard. The first time I saw it, my stomach just got hurt bad laughing from Lisa's quips.

All the other performances are just as good. The DVD itself treats us to some interesting deleted scenes, two of which are really funny. I personally think the director's commentary was a bit disappointing. I thought he had a lot of guts to do such a film, but his commentary focused on the technicalities of this film.

If you like gay movies, or if you're straight but you love gay people, you should get out and rent the DVD and if you love it, then order it!

Summary: Witty, Funny, Mean ...
Review: but ultimately redeeming. This one moves fast and furious through the lives of these characters over the course of a year. Yes, there are plot holes and some illogical moments, but the performances and the wit save this film - big time. Ricci is absolutely hysterical; you want to slap her so hard and yet she is too funny to let you go through with it. Very eclectic cast. Highly recommended.

Summary: not terrible, but overhyped
Review: This movie was not very good. I actually just finished watching it for the second time, as I watched it in the theatres originally and disliked it a lot. I thought a second vewing now, a few years later, would change my mind since so many of my friends and acquaintances raved about this movie and particularly about Lisa Kudrow's performance.

It's amazing how watching this movie again just confirms how mediocre this movie is. My biggest complaint is that the characters act so illogically, non-sensically, and stupidly. Don't get me wrong, plenty of great movies have characters do stupid things and we love them and the movies anyway because we can connect their poor lack of judgement with our own and the complexity of the characters gives us a rich opportunity to study their foibles.

Not this movie. I'll spare you the details since a synopsis is available in many other reviews. My point is really around Martin Donovan's character Bill and Lisa Kudrow's character Lucia. Bill is still stung over the death of his previous boyfriend and finds his current boyfriend has been messing around with Bill's half-sister who's staying with him after being on the streets ("I told you I was bisexual"). Throughout the movie Bill has the personality of a dead fish, provides no rationale for why he keeps chasing both his loser half-sister and even-more loser boyfriend half-way across the country trying to stop her from drinking and smoking during her pregnancy, and allowing her to extort him for money. I guess I couldn't connect with his actions, the wild goose chase, and overall unwillingness to kiss off this sister who seems to hold him in total contempt.

Lucia follows Bill on this wild goose chase of his sister and boyfriend, making for a sort of chase-of-a-chase. Maybe I missed something, but I don't see her character's motivation. I am a HUGE fan of Lisa Kudrow on "Friends", but I wasn't terribly impressed with her acting in this movie. It wasn't horrible, but not worthy of the raves I have heard.

Maybe one star is too harsh, but my "butt-fidget-o-meter" was on high during this film (that's when a movie is a tad too boring and I start shifting in my seat). I wouldn't waste money on buying this movie. Just rent it, or better yet borrow it for free from the poor sap you may know who actually bought it.
