Summary: Better than expected
Review: Scott Gurney, who first got his start as a lifeguard in "Married...with Children," now plays the cultural equivalent of a modern-day Narcissus in this often enjoyable behind-the-scenes look at the gay porno industry. Not as moving as Boogie Nights, or as complicated, this film has moments that make you laugh, cry, and actually think. The ending is truly inspired, not at all the typical happy hollywood ending, and I encourage straight and gay viewers alike to give it a chance.

The film delves deeply, but not in a painstaking sort of way, into the life of a young male naif (Sean) who becomes obsessed with a straight man who does gay porno (for the "gay pay"). It's very typical of someone his age, just learning about life and love, and one can't help but find some empathy for the young man, and disdain for Johnny Rebel (Scott Gurney) and all his wickedness. While Sean is addicted to Johnny, Johnny is addicted to crystal meth. One learns quickly that any type of addiction is dangerous.

I normally don't buy DVDs unless I think they're will be some repeat entertainment value, and this one falls into that category. Also, look for cameos from the gay entertainment industry, including Chi Chi Larue and Cole Tucker. Very hysterical.

Summary: Interesting, But Didn't Stay With Me
Review: Some movies, really good movies, stay with me after I have seen them. Sometimes, weeks or months later, I will think of a scene or a character and begin to remember the movie. I love that feeling.

The Fluffer didn't do that for me. It had been talked up big to me, so maybe it just didn't meet the high standards that I was expecting. It was an interesting movie, don't get me wrong. It just isn't all that some people make it out to be.

Summary: The Fluffer
Review: The cover is the best part of the movie. Don't waste your time or money (like I did) on this terrible excuse for a movie.

Summary: Come on - this is just "Fluff"
Review: The Fluffer is a film that is titillating in its title only. For those unfamiliar with what the term means - to put it politely, it is the name of a job in the adult film business. That person is responsible for helping the male actors (gay or straight) get it up and at 'em. Once the whole idea of the titillation is gone (about 10 minutes in), the movie is just sadly mundane.

If you want to watch it for hot guys, then okay, but admit that to yourself (frankly, I've seen better looking on most commercials and soap operas). The acting is very sub-par and the script is a long drawn out effort to stretch a thin storyline: this story could have been told in 15 or 20 minutes.

Basically, the plot is: Naive young Hollywood wanna be becomes a production assistant at a gay porn studio (can you see what's coming a mile away?). Eventually, he is asked to be the fluffer for the porn actor of his dreams (who just happens to be straight). One thing leads to another (you don't want me to give away what plot there is do you?) and we learn a little lesson about trust and naivity.

Jeez-a-loo - gay oriented films of the late 90's and early 00's have become what French films were to the 1970's. Everyone wants to seem to be really cutting edge, so they watch them and like them (even though they really know most of them are terrible). In reality, there are good gay films and there are bad ones, just as there were good French films and bad ones too.

This is a bad gay film. So scold it like your dog: "Bad gay film! Bad!

Summary: Something for everyone
Review: The Fluffer was an extremely brave film amidst a sea of watered down, safe movies. I applaud its risk-taking subject matter and its ability to pull off such risks. Especially thanks to the performances of Roxanne Day and Michael Cunio, who are the heart and soul of the film. Being a straight man, it was a joy to see a film that dealt with mostly gay issues, yet moved me deeply all the same. It just goes to show that human emotions of love, desire, obsession, pain, and loss affect all people equally, whether man, woman, gay or straight.
The depths to which Day and Cunio plumb as actors is rarely seen these days and is greatly appreciated by this viewer. They both have strong and lasting careers ahead of them.
A strong movie that helps to give Independent Film a fighting chance. Don't miss it.

Summary: Good but not great
Review: The movie starts out really good but I think I could have written a better ending. The movie could have done without the whole murder and flee to Mexico plot. How many fired porn stars go on to kill people and flee the country anyway? They could have ended it by resolving his relationship with his girlfriend or starting a relationship with his fluffer who he apparently also had feelings for since he kissed him. I did highly enjoy the porn scenes in this movie. They were laughable and highly realistic as to what porn movies are actually like. If only this movie had stayed on one path it would have been great. But the twist ending turns it into something it's not.

Summary: Should have been better
Review: This film starts promisingly, with an attractive cast, a great story premise, good production values and a good soundtrack. I really wanted to like this film. Sadly, it soon went off the rails and never really recovered. I hated the entire last third of the film and the awful ending.

The lead actor (not the one on the cover, the other guy) is a total hunk and quite a good actor too. The rest of the cast is also very good, but, in the main, the supporting actors (such as the wonderful Deborah Harry, whose impressive musical career always seems to overshadow the fact that she is actually a very talented actor who always chooses edgy and interesting material) are wasted and totally under-developed. The story focuses only on the two male leads, and since one of those characters is very unappealing, self-absorbed and, sorry to sound harsh, but basically just boring, that does not lead the film too many places to slide but downhill.

I wanted to like this film, and I would say that if you're interested you should watch it, but don't bother buying it.

Summary: This IS GREAT, TRUST ME , BY:EDWIN MONTANEZ
Review: This is a great film, and the acting is great also. Especially from Scott Gurney. Trust me, it is good. The story is very good and it is sad also. At first, you see why someone would be attracted to Johnny Rebel, he is great looking and very attractive, but later, after you get to see how Johnny really is, you wonder why anyone would be attracted to him. He is a conceided jerk that only cares about himself. This film takes you deep into the gay porn industry and let's you see a lot. The story is great, and the acting is phenomenal. The actors in this film are very believable, and you believe they are the characters they are playing. I only saw this fim because I caught it on cable one night, and decided to watch it. I am hapy I did because I truly enjoyed it, and I am a hetero-sexual male. People, watch this film, it wont win oscars, but it deserves a few.

Summary: Narcissus and Echo and a whole lot of other myths
Review: This movie can be enjoyed on a number of levels. You can take it as a straight story about the gay porn industry, a drama about a gay-for-pay porn star (Baywatch hunk Scott Gurney), his stripper girlfriend (fascinating and convincing Roxanne Day), and the new-to-the-industry cameraman and eponymous "fluffer" (Michael Curio). Or you can watch it to catch all the little homages directors Glatzer and West sprinkle throughout the film (Vertigo, Streetcar Named Desire, Sweet Bird of Youth, The 400 Blows, etc.) Or you can count the number of mirrors they use to reinforce the Narcissus and Echo myth they use as a structuring device for the film (to make sure that we get it, they open the film with an epigraph from Ovid). Or, if you're knowledgable about the porn industry, you can just sit back and count the number of porn celebs who grace the screen with walk-on roles.

Actually though, I liked the film. The three leads and all of the supporting cast (including Deborah Harry as the tough-as-nails strip club manager) turn in strong and believable performances--though I'm sure there are some who will consider FLUFFER to be BOOGIE-NIGHTS "lite." It's not as angst-laden as BOOGIE NIGHTS and all the stars contiue to look fabulous even as they bottom out on their excesses (Think Ann Blyth in THE HELEN MORGAN STORY).

The DVD has some great extras, including deleted scenes, enlightening directors' commentary, and close-ups of boxes they dummied-up for Johnny Rebel's (Gurney) porn videos. One of the film's running gags is the series of send-up titles for the porn movies (usually clever puns on the names of "legitimate" Hollywood films, perhaps the directors' way of saying mainstream and adult films are not all that different after all).

By the way, if you don't know what a "fluffer" is, this probably isn't the movie for you.
