Summary: The Mystical Land of Tír na nÓg
Review: The bleeding edges of myth and reality intersect in this dark, tale of an Irish 'traveller' family, settled in the poorest area of urban Ireland. The children's horse is named after the old Gaelic myth of Tír na nÓg, the "land of the young", in which ancient Óisín, an Irish hero, is tempted by (Fairywoman) Niamh to ride across the sea and stay there, never to grow old.

An invisible rift has developed between the traveller children, and their father due to his grief, and inability to accept the death of their mother. The little boys take comfort in the old tales, accepting the view that the harshness of their deprived lifestyle appears to have a corresponding mystical parrallel.

Fascinatingly told, both heartrending, heartwarming, and as rough as raw whiskey.

Summary: Great
Review: This film came to our local theaters advertised as a "children's film", but it wasn't- not in my opinion...It is, for me, a tender, sometimes very funny, bittersweet, breathtakingly lovely film (in setting as well as in content)...a romantically magical adventure taking place in rural Ireland-of two young gyspy boys and a horse on a journey - encouraged by a beloved gypsy elder - to venture off to a land far away, and not really of this world...And their dad, former gypsy, denouncing his title, separates from the gypsies, taking with him his boys - to a life in a tenement project...he is a wounded heart...healing...then reunion. the boys starring in the film are not "actors", and are fabulous...Gabriel Byrne is incredible...i hope i haven't written too much! The Devlins sing a beautiful song, other artists on the soundtrack, too - a good soundtrack - please see this film!

Summary: A small gem
Review: This is a classic that will surely stand the test of time. It is also one of those rare movies that can be watched with equal enjoyment by adults and children. It appeals on both levels.

I had no idea there were Irish gypsies before this movie, far less that they suffer prejudice. And the grittiness of the housing projects was an educational contrast to the usual "idyllic" view of Ireland. It spoiled a few illusions but I appreciated the realism. Some mythic images remain, however: I read that the story was inspired by the sight of a white horse on an upper floor of a Dublin housing project...which would never happen in America:)

Summary: An exquisite work!!!
Review: This is one of those films that keeps drawing you in. It's the story, the magnificent cinematography, and the performances. The two boys are extraordinary. Whenever someone says, ...'this is a film for the whole family' you usually want to run the other way. Not so with, "Into The West." Yeah, gather all the kids 'round the TV and roll the tape. Everyone will love it. It packs a strong emotional punch at the finish and I was so sorry the film actually ended.

Summary: THIS HAS EVERYTHING
Review: This movie has a subtle romance, near-violence (but really no violence), humor, adventure, touching memories, kids' antics, a supernatural horse, and . . . well, all the ingredients of a first-class film. I've shown this to my English classes many times. And it always intrigues me fully!
A movie with everything--even a fairly close parallel with the spiritual principles Paul Twitchell wrote about so clearly.
A movie for everyone.

Summary: A magical, lovable Irish tale centered around two young boys
Review: This movie transpired me into a time when I believed in miracles, magic, and that all will end well if you BELIEVE. The youngest brother broke my heart in his search to see his mother and except for a few "bad" words(use the mute button), it's a good family film.I only wish I could find the sound track to it because it is beautiful and lends so much to the film. I've looked all over for it but have been told it is no longer available.

Summary: Beautiful Movie
Review: This was a beautiful movie. The opening scene is of a mystical white horse galloping along the beach at night. The music in this Movie is amazing. It captures the mystery and magic of this story. One of my favorite movies, and it is a shame that it is not made anymore.

Summary: Great
Review: This was an under-noticed masterpiece. It was promoted as a kids film. But it's really a darker literary type film. So they lost both the adult audience and the kids audience. No one went and saw it. I saw it mainly because I'm a big fan of Gabriel Byrne, and was pleasantly surprised to find it possibly one of the best films I've very seen. A rich film, and the littlest kid, who must be 5 years old, is BRILLIANT. Some people train to be actors longer than this kid has been alive, but he gives a fantastic performance. As do all the actors. The writing is wonderful, too.

Summary: We can't stop renting, so decided to buy!
Review: We first rented this movie for my 5 year old daughter, not knowing what to expect, but we knew she liked horses. We rented this movie perhaps 10 times since; she is 9 and instead of renting it again, I decided to buy it for her. This is more than a movie about a horse. it is a juxaposition of the past and present, the harsh reality of modern life and the mythology that gives life meaning. Whether Irish, English, or American, you will like this movie, and after watching it once, you will likely have to watch it again to convince yourself you understood what you saw.
