Summary: Not for Children or the Faint of Heart !!!
Review: After seeing this video advertised on one of my children's television shows, I immediately sought it out. The animation reminded me of "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Kiki's Delivery Service" (both of which are among the best childrens' videos available, imho).

After peeling off the wrapper (which had a sticker on it which said it was suitable for ages 3 and up) I sat down to watch "The Dog of Flanders" with my two children (ages 7 and 9), and the three of us were bawling our eyes out by the end of the film (me primarily due to guilt for not screening it earlier!) My kids were devastated by the ending of this movie. This is NO Disney flick. Any of you familiar with Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl" will have an idea of how this story winds up.

I do, however, give this movie 5 stars because it is a beautifully rendered video of a classic tale. The characters are very well developed and the animation is really beautiful. However, this probably only served to contribute to the sense of horror my children experienced when the video was finally over. They were truly inconsolable.

If you do decide to purchase this video, please be sure to watch it yourself before screening it for your kids.

Summary: Trust me. Great for 7-10 years old kids.
Review: Although some say this movie is too hard for small kids, I watched this when I was 7 years old (when I was in Japan) and had no problem. In fact I even remember it as one of the most touching story that I saw when I was a kid. I have learned a lot from this: "Do not judge other people from how rich/poor they are" "Do not be cruel to animals" "Cherish your talent that God gave you" etc.
This 1999 version is much gentler than older version.
I personally thought that dubbed version (DVD) is better, not because they cut the slow-moving part, but because they cut the unnecessary mawkish part (ex. Sister Alloise sobbing at the last scene). I wish they cut all the Sister Alloise part though.

Summary: Are you sure this movie is made in 1959?
Review: Are you sure this movie is made in 1959? It looks like color animation version. I do not think Japanese made color animation movies in 1959.

Summary: oh boy, I cried.
Review: Beautiful pictures with beautiful music. It's not a story of dog. It's a story about a boy in 19 century in Belgium. Great movie expecially if you have a dog. Recommended.

Summary: Original was better
Review: I remember I saw this when i was kid in Japan. Original one was better. There are so many distractions in this new version. The use of computer graphic at the last seen was just distracting. It's like "we are producing this under small budget, so we could afford only 10 seconds CG". The first and last seen with adult nun is also distracting. There was no point to it. It doesn't give any depth or angle to the story. The was the grandfather died was also very artificial. They could do better...

Summary: The Dog Of Flanders Is magnificent
Review: I remember my mom buying me a comic book of this story when i was 6 years old. It was in chinese and I couldn't read it, but I loved the book so much. I cherished that book. It's been 18 years since I seen it, this movie Is wonderful. I believe it is a bit mature for young children, but a must see for everyone. It isn't everyday that a cartoon movie can make a grown man cry.

Summary: Not getting your money's worth with the DVD and dub.
Review: I would have given this movie 5 stars, but there is something VERY WRONG with it that you need to know! Before you go and buy the DVD of Dog of Flanders, just look at something: The length of the movie on the DVD (and the dub VHS) is 93mins. The length of the movie on the sub VHS is 104mins. Why? Because Pioneer decided that we should pay more for a censored, dub-only DVD. The movie itself is great and moving, though very sad. Be prepared to cry- there's no "disney ending" here. However, for some reason, Pioneer decided to cut out the "slow-moving" parts as well as some shots of animal abuse. The movie itself IS slow-moving, because it is supposed to be real-life, not "action-packed," and the abuse is central to the story. Please don't waste your money with an edited version. It takes very little effort to read subtitles and even if you miss some of the dialog, the events in the movie speak for themselves. The movie itself is wonderful and you will remember it for a long time. Just make sure you give yourself the chance to remember ALL of it.

Summary: A beautiful story about a young boy who want to be a painter
Review: Let make my review simple, this is one of the most beautiful story I ever known. The dog of Flanders is also one of the most excelent animated movies that ever made. This is the first movie that actually made me cry, it's probably because of the combination of the story, the music and the art of the animation. Well, I'm not good at explaining something, all I can say is "WATCH IT!!!"

Summary: Non Disney animation.
Review: Not a typical animation. No dancing animals, no happy ending. Compared to original story, character's age was set at much younger age. In original, they are 15 or something, but in this story, they are 8. This make audience hard to understand why a girl's father worry so much about their romance and marriage.
