Summary: Toshba SD4900 - Excellent!! Look no further.
Review: I've owned 3 other progressive scan DVD players (Sony, Panasonic, Samsung) ranging from $250-$300. I am convinced that the Toshiba SD4900 at $79 blows them all away. Picture quality is unbelievable. Sound is astounding. It is very user friendly and is able to read my DVDs that won't play in other players. It also has DVD Audio. Highly recommneded!!!

Summary: Greaty picture, cant play dvd-rs?
Review: Just got this today, and i have the sd4800 too. I think the picture on this new one is a little better. and the sound is good too. But It doesnt play dvd-rs. but aww so what. I have test 2 dvds (valley girl and rush in rio) both which freeze up on 2 seperate scenes. but they play seemless on this model. But for now they still can freeze, i just havent given it enough time. Overall for the money it has a pretty good solid build to it too.. go head get it..I use the remote from my sd4800 anyway. iam more use to it i quess.

Summary: Great Featuers - lousy performance
Review: Pros - great video

Cons - sometimes it works, sometimes it does not

I have been an avid Toshiba TV and DVD user for years. Great and reliable products. I bought this DVD player after much research. It seemed a great deal. I needed a Digital Decoder in the DVD player since my receiver is, unfortunately, only digital ready. My old Toshiba, dual-disc, digital-ready DVD player had no problems with this shortcoming. This player, however, has proven very frustrating. Sometimes, it works, sometimes it doesn't. Video is always excellent, but audio either works great or works not at all. It is not a connection problem. One dvd will work, the next will not. The same dvd will work for titles, but will not provide sound otherwise. That same dvd, on the other hand, will work one time, but not another. I am sure it is merely a defective unit, but I saw at least two other units at Best Buy for sale as open items. Maybe I am a little too conspiratorial, but I see no reason to believe that these units anything other than likewise temperamental. I will return and buy a more expensive unit that, hopefully, will work.

Summary: Blank Screen Booby
Review: The 4900 performed well 'till curiosity got the best of its new owner. After selecting "progressive scan on" from the set-up menu, the screen went blank. Presumably, going to the set-up menu and toggling back to "progressive scan off" would restore the picture. But--how could one scroll through the menu without a picture? To no avail, this desperate tinker unplugged the cord to see if removing power should restore the default settings.

Why did Toshiba booby-trap this product?

Sad.

Summary: good at this price
Review: The overall performance is good. However, I could not find the volume control.I did try using FreeZoneLG6053.exe. After I unzipped it, it created two files:021022_0801.cue and 021022_0801.bin. I burned them to a 650 mb CDRW and close it. However, this DVD player could not read it and showed disc error or something like that. I also tried LG5000.zip and it did let me choose the region code 0. Again, when I tested it with several region 3 DVDs, it did not work. Finally, the hack for LG6054 does work for SD-4900. Now, it is region code 0.

Summary: Incapable of more than 480p.
Review: There's nothing wrong with this DVD player for everyday use, but if you invested in a true HDTV, you'll want a DVD player that not only can upgrade from 480i to 480p, but one that can handle 720 & 1080 as well. Action films need 720p for best (theater-like) results, while more sedate but richly detailed films look their best in 1080i.
If your TV is ready for these true HD modes, why buy a DVD player that isn't?

Summary: A solid performer from Toshiba
Review: This is a great DVD player. It does a fine job playing DVD/CD's in multiple formats including WMA & MP3. It has a good tech appearance and solid housing (many of the $100 DVD players are very plastic feeling/cheap looking). The remote is functional, but somewhat crowded on top with small buttons and visually unappealing. Basic RCA cables are included...buy component video cables (Y Pb Pr) if you want to utilize the progressive scan capability and MAKE SURE your TV has these inputs! It also has S Video and Digital coax and optical output - some of the less expensive DVD players only have basic RCA in/out connectors. The SD-4900 also has 5.1 surround sound connectors - compatible with a DTS receiver. Very good front panel controls. Overall an excellent choice.

Summary: Best DVD player ever!
Review: Wow. This DVD player is awesome. I have had it for almost a year and it has never let me down. About the Progressive Scan problem, I read the instruction booklet about it. You need a Progressive Scan compatible TV.
I love all the features, and the remote layout. All the music features rock, and the 3D surround sound is great!
I recomend this product to anyone looking for a High-Quality DVD player.
