Summary: Review update
Review: After making minor repairs to the door front using double sided tape, I no longer have any problems with the tray opening and closing.

This is a great player and I would recommend this player. I have not had any problems with playback of any type of dics that I have used. The picture and sound are great. The video fine processor improves the video quality, it is so good that you must see it for yourself. I have another JVC DVD player and it has been working perfect for the last three years and I expect the same from my current JVC DVD player.

Great DVD player. Plays all types of - +'s disc and MP3's with no problems. Great picture and sound using the latest technology and fastest video processor todate.

Summary: Problem playing DVD's
Review: For the price, I decided that maybe I would be lucky and get a good machine. No way. The picture freezes, as everyone else says, for about 10-15 seconds every 15 or so minutes. How annoying. It is impossible to comfortably enjoy a movie. I usually take the advice of the other reviewers but being the eternal optimist that I am, I thought I would be lucky and tried anyway. Oops. I learned my lesson.

Summary: A problem that Amazon.com must deal with
Review: I bought this player on July 2nd because it had rave reviews. I recieved the player, gave it a test drive and all appeared fine. I didn't notice the freezing as MANY others have since posted until a few weeks later when I tried to watch a DVD. This is obviously a problem with the batch of players that Amazon.com has in inventory. Now I read that I have 30 days to return it. It's July 30th, and they better take the thing back or fix the problem. Looks like everyone has this freezing issue. I sure wish I was contacted if they were receiving that many complaints about a product. Hopefully they replace my defective DVD player!

Summary: Me too!
Review: I cannot recommend. Freezes at each chapter has got to be one of the most annoying things I have ever had to endure.

Summary: Complete piece of crap
Review: I had always been warned that "JVC" stood for "Junk Video Corporation". Now I know that this is true. This unit is a complete piece of junk. After 4 months, the unit started freezing regularly, and wouldn't even power down without unplugging it. After about two weeks of this, the thing completely died. Unplugging the unit wouldn't even reset it. Of course, it has a 1 year warranty on parts but only 90 days on labor. Labor is the expensive part of a repair, so it isn't worth even trying to get it repaired. To be honest, I've had problems with optical disk players (both CD and DVD) from other manufacturers as well. My Sony DVD player died on me as well, but ran well enough for 2-3 years before crapping out. Seems like a number of these low-end consumer electronics manufacturers are just trying to make the initial sale, and don't care about putting enough quality into the units to keep customers coming back. I'll never buy another JVC product. Oh yeah, the other thing is that this unit has the cheesiest looking big blue light that shines out the front of the DVD loading door. Looks like something from a cheesy 1960s sci-fi special.

Summary: Great picture
Review: I haven't had any of the freezing problems that others have mentioned. I recently purchased this player after my last unit died after 5 years. I had alot of DVD's that would freeze with my old unit but since they would freeze at exactly the same point, I just assumed the disk was scratched. However, with this new unit, the movie played great. I even noticed a significantly improved picture over my old model. I am impressed with the improvements they have made in the last 5 years.

Summary: Keep Looking
Review: I purchased this unit to replace my Panasonic S35 which just died after about 15 months. I am in a bind since finding a DVD player these days with an optical output for connection to my home theater receiver was proving difficult. The JVC was one of the few units still currently produced on the market which does offer this feature.

Overall, the picture quality seemed grainy compared to the Panasonic and previous Sony unit that I owned. The blue light across the door is cheesy and the DVD door itself is very fragile and flimsy. It played scratched DVD's and DVD-Rs without any problems. However, a DVD that my kids installed with some fingerprints on the disc froze and the door would not open until I unplugged the unit. Lastly, the player would freeze for a second or two when changing to the next scene periodically during the movie.

Considering the price of the JVC player compared to other brands available on the market, you can do better than this one. I'm taking mine back after only owning it for two days.

Summary: Great Picture but returning due to unusual problem
Review: I received the unit 3 days ago and set it up without any trouble. The picture quality is fantastic. My issue however was an unusual habit of movies "freezing" every 5-10 minutes (no, I don't thinks its the player looking for layer 2 on the DVD as the JVC website suggests). I tried a number of different movies that had worked the day before on my "old" Sony DVD player, they all did the same thing.

If I can't figure out whats causing it its going to have to go back. As long as you don't get this problem I think this product would be a winner.

Summary: JVC XVN410 DVD Player
Review: I was initially pleased with this product, it was a simple hook up,and Consumer Reports gives it high marks. Unfortunately many of these players freeze up during play, and this happens every 8-10 minutes. I returned the player to Video Only, and they exchanged it for another of the same model. Imagine my dismay when this unit also froze up every 8-10 minutes. Upon returning the second unit, I was told that "freezing up" was a known problem with this player. Unfortunately the store refused to issue a refund, even though they had been aware of the freezing problem for some time.

Summary: Must be a design flaw
Review: Several reviewers have pointed to a problem with the unit freezing at chapter boundaries and also occasionally breaking up into large pixels. However, being an optimist, I figured this was just the few people that got a bad unit and there must be hundreds of others who have working units and didn't bother to write a review. Right? WRONG! I bought the XVN410BK's twin (the XVNP10S which has all the same stuff but adds multimedia card reader). It has all the same problems reported by the other reviewers. I'm guessing this is a design flaw in either the processor chip(s) or the laser/drive unit. Guess I'll be buying some other brand from now on!
