Summary: A Little Princess
Review: I'm not sure why I've always liked this book so much- usually I can't stand books like this. This is a sweet, sad, and happy tale. I know Sara is a very fake character, but what I like about it is that she and everyone else realizes that she's too good to be true. It would be different if the author didn't even realize that she made Sara unrealistic.

I think it's unfair to categorize this book ages 5-7. I didn't appreciate this book until I was about 9 or 10. I know a 5 year old won't be as touched by this story as much as an older child would be. My favorite part of A Little Princess is when Sara is in the attic and just cries. It shows that even she is a little human. I highly recommend this book to all ages.

Summary: A CHARMING LITTLE STORY. AN ALL-TIME GREAT.
Review: What little girl doesn't wish to become a princess? In this adorable story, Sara lives through a Cinderella-like existance. First loved, then despised and abused by her caretakers, and then,...I better now tell any more, but you should read it. It is a timeless classic.

You will want to read it over and over again. It teaches the importance of treating all people kindly, and other virtues.

Summary: A treat for the eye and the heart
Review: Very few recent children's movies portray young characters who are capable of kindness, empathy, intelligence and who possess, as well, an adventurous, imaginative spirit. A child watching this movie sees Sara practicing all these attributes and is treated to lush and artful cinematography that, during a few of the scenes, nearly takes your breath away. It reminded me of some of the Latin American literature classified as "magical realism". I am grateful that Alfonso Cuaron has directed a family movie that I, the parent, will enjoy watching again and again. I think that the children watching this film will also benefit on many different levels. The film may be different from the written version but it illustrates an important topic with its treatment of the classic story; how it is possible for people/children to face adversity.

Summary: Excellent story for children.
Review: This book is a children's classic, containing all the elements of a fairy tale. There's a villain, a good person, a magician, a princess in disguise, and a "happily ever after" ending. Except, unlike a fairy tale, it could have happened.

Sara Crewe's officer father sent her to an English boarding school when she was seven. Because she was rich, the ambitious headmistress of the school, Miss Minchin, spoiled her. Then Sara's father lost all his money and died, leaving Sara a pauper in Miss Minchin's care. Miss Minchin put her to work at what was essentially slave labor, scrubbing floors and shoveling coal from dawn to dusk at no pay and very little in the way of food and other necessities of life. Sara was about to despair, when mysterious things started showing up in her room. Hot meals laid out for her in the morning and evening. Then a rug for the bare floor. Then a warm nightgown to wear, and a new blanket for the bed. She didn't know what was happening, and assumed it was magic.

It was a fine book, very good for children I think. My only problem is that Sara, like most of Frances Hodgson Burnett's characters, seemed too good to be true. She was never angry at Miss Minchin for treating her cruelly. When she found fourpence in the street, she bought food and gave almost all of it to a beggar girl even though she herself was starving. And so on. But other than that it was great.
