Summary: The saddest aspect of this story. . .
Review: is the graphic depiction of war and killing as they triumph over intelligent human behaviour.

I don't doubt there is an element of autobiography in this story. Viewers who were impressed by this film will want to see (and read) the other work of William Wharton: Dad, Birdy, etc.

Summary: A sad story of hope
Review: I watched this movie when it was first released on video. I knew nothing about it other than it was a story of WW 2 soldiers. What I walked away with was the sad tale of men at arms trying to find peace in utter chaos. As a former U.S. Marine, I could relate quite easily with the emotions and desire to want to live displayed by the characters. I could understand the plight of the German soldiers, young boys and old men impressed into service when Nazi Germany had nothing left, who wanted only to live in the dying days of the war. I was moved by the haunting musical score and the intense close-ups of the characters, torn by indecision and naivety, yet bouyed by the hope of salvation in an otherwise brutal and senseless campaign of destruction. This movie brings forth the anti-war message and sings such a message loud and clear. The heart-breaking prospect of a truce gone bad is the climax of a film that shows us the insane brutality of a war in which it's participants fought for each other, not a country or flag.

Summary: Excellent "alternative" WWII movie
Review: This movie is a hauntingly soulful and remains one of my all-time favorites. Plan to watch it at night-- light some candles, turn off the lights, and prepare for an emotional experience that you will not easily forget. I do not "inflate" ratings. This movies deserves its 5 stars.

Summary: This the most true-to-life movie made about WWII in Europe
Review: "A Midnight Clear" is a truly great film about young boys in combat during World War Two. Rather than to dwell on the historical or on the blood and guts action,( like John Wayne, Sly Stallone and the other paper heroes) this picture tells what it is like to be a young boy caught up in the madness of combat. I served in that war as an infantryman and I can say with authority that this film best tells the story of war from the narrow perspective of a small squad of soldiers trying to do their duty but most of all trying to stay alive.A truly moving and memorable anti-war film. It's message is similar to the book "Stories From the Pacific", which is a series of short stories written by a young boy who fought with the Marines in the Island War of 1942 - 1945.( This book is available from Amazon.com )

Summary: Powerful
Review: For those of you that wish to see a movie that truly makes you think about the way war can affect people, see this movie. It is amazingly filmed, and you can't help but feel that you know these characters after the movie has ended. I am surprised that this movie is not raved about more often.

Summary: Great!
Review: This movie was extraordinary. It keep me on the edge of my seat until the end. When I first saw this I didnt know if it was a mysteria or a war classic. I loved it and recommend it.

Summary: Very intelligently made war movie
Review: This is one of the great WWII movies. Very refreshing to see something that is not just another portrayal of a platoon ripping through Europe. I would strongly reccomend this one along with Saving Private Ryan and When Trumpets Fade (HBO I think). I would also reccomend reading "The Big Red One"-I haven't seen the movie, but the book is wonderful.

Summary: Not for war movie buffs
Review: This was more a study in human fallibility than war per se. A story of two groups of soldiers on opposite sides in WWII who have reached the point of wondering just what it is they are fighting for. If this movie accomplishes nothing else it is a good portrayal of the insanity of war. It defines the likenesses of the two opposing groups while downplaying their differences and in the end reaches the conclusion that we share this big old world and should be able to reach some accommodation with each other. From the opening scenes where Gary Sinise as the nearly insane character Mother strips naked while running through a snowy forrest to the point where Mother shoots the bullet that destroys the agreement reached between his unit and the Germans it is a story of the human fight for survival.

Summary: A great movie
Review: This movie was excellent. There are many war movies out there that have a big war hero or a big bloody battle where the good guys win. This is not one of those movies. This movie was very realistic in it's portrayal of how confusing and discouraging war can be for the soldiers fighting in it. If it is an action packed war movie that you want, try Platoon. If you want a great movie about the psycological stress of war, see this excellent movie.

Summary: One of the best War Movies of the Century
Review: This war movie is not about bullets, bomb, and generals. It's about the common soldier who is afraid to die, who is confused, and want to lie. This movie drives you away from the insanity of war and how to bring people together who are so far apart. Don't miss it! You can learn a lot from this movie.
