Summary: It is the soul of the battle...
Review: I live in Fauquier County Virginia, home to many of those who really were in Gettysburg. While there were indeed some slight alterations attributed to artistic license, the artistic value and realism are incredible. Chamberlain's talk to the 2nd Maine, his bayonet charge at Little Roundtop, and the heartbreaking stories of Armistead, Garnett, Reynolds, and Hancock were tear jerkers. Sam Elliott, bless you for insisting on absolute accuracy in your dress. Steve Pohanka, thank you for insisting on authenticity throughout. Mr. Turner, when are you going to do the Battle of Brandy Station?. My mother lived on Fleetwood Hill and knew the stories...thanks for a great epic

Summary: Excellent dipicture of a horrible, horrible war (battle).
Review: Gettysburgh has become one of my favorite movies of all time. As a high school history teacher, I have come to respect the and admire the valor and bravery of the soldiers of this terrible war, accurately displayed in this movie. The music adds so much to the passion and intensity of almost every scene - a truly sad movie..a truly sad war.

Summary: great movie, bad hair and some lack of dialouge
Review: I have watched this movie numerous times and I wish they would bring it out in dvd. Tom Barringers part needed some decent dialouge but in all this is the second best civil war movie I have seen, next to Glory. For those of us who have decendents who died there, it is a tribute. When is Gods and Generals coming out?

Summary: Great!
Review: I think that the movie is awsome. I could do without all the talking, but otherwise, its wonderful. The music and drama really catches you. I am about to watch it for the 7 time.

Summary: Great movie, but is this really war?
Review: I would concur with all the other favorable reviews presented here. Great directing. Great acting. Yes, the talking was a bit much and the facial hair was pretty hideous. But by and large, this was a stirring portrayal of America's most morally devastating military adventure. My beef is perhaps less with the movie "Gettysburg" itself and more about the concept of dramatizing war. Were there such rousing pep talks on the battlefield? Maybe. But the history lessons disguised as authentic dialogue were a bit tedious and unconvincing. The real problem, however, was the music. There were no symphony orchestras at Gettysburg. There were drummer boys and buglers, but the lush crescendos of a string section were obviously not there. This soundtrack could be applied towards a Free Willy movie or any movie bent on dramatizing a profound and moving message. It doesn't tell us about war. Rather it obscures war's starkly conspicuous and anguishing realities. As Walt Whitman said, the real war would never get into the books. It would never get into the movies either.

Summary: Best WBTS Movie yet
Review: This is the best civil war movie yet except for the LONG talking scenes. Hey Mr. Maxwell, if you by chance see this I have one suggestion for your upcoming Gods and Generals filming--A lot more ACTION and less talking. What really stands out to me in the movie are the musical scores that go along perfectly with the different scenes, especially Pickett's Charge. It really sets the mood. Great job Mr. Turner/Maxwell.

Summary: The finest Civil War movie
Review: This is a great portrayl of the frightening experience at Gettysburg. Although I wish the script could have included more character development, the casting in the movie is great. Tom Berenger, Martin Sheen, and Jeff Daniels bring the spirit of the two armies into your soul. By the way, if you look closely in a scene, you can see a truck!

Summary: Gettysburg is most awsome movie in the World!
Review: The movie was awsome. Plain and simple. One thing however, does stand out: the length. During the talking parts it is very easy to fall asleep. I've seen this at least 20 times. The first time I saw it was a night. It, however, kept me on the edge of the seat. Any movie, book, or any other form of entertainement which does that is Awsome. Every time after I watch it, I feel drowsy and almost glad it's over and come back to life; like any long movie. Sometimes when I watch it I only watch one half. Although on the other hand it's like it's another world and when it's over you come back to reality.

Summary: Good historial foray into the actual battle.
Review: Excellent screenplay of the battle. some artistic license taken in the production. It is sad that the regular version on sale, has the missing scenes, as people ask me, "When does Gen. Ewell enter the movie?". Unfortunately I tell them, that they must obtain the Turner version, sold under seperate cover, usually through TNT when the movie is shown on the TNT station, and it cost's 99.00 dollars. Except for the fact that the continuity of the directors cut is lost, the movie is very factual. Although " Give them the cold steel boys" is attributed to Gn. Armistead, it was nice to see Gn. Garnett utter the phrase to soon before the angle was actually attacked.

We use the movie as a visual aide in a Civil War Course taught by myself at a local college. also, did you notice how Col. Chamberlain goes from a Lt. Colonel to a full "bird" colonel in a matter of minutes? It is the uniform, and directors mistake, always watch rank. Otherwise a top notch movie about a sad experience in American history. My accolades to Ted Turner, and Robert Maxwell.
