Summary: Special Edition Not So Special
Review: If you've never seen a Monty Python show/movie, rent one first, because it's not for everyone. If you're a Python fan, you know the deal, so I'll just skip to the special features, which in my opinion were disappointingly unfunny. By the players' consensus, this is the worst of the Python movies, but it's still pretty good if your a fan. This movie is essential to the Python fan's collection, just don't expect too much from the bonus disc.

Summary: Great Laugh
Review: This Special Edition of the meaning of life is great! The film has been restored nicley, and you even have the option to veiw the directors cut, which features 3 addintion scenes....the quality of the delted scenes is quite poor, but it doesnt matter to me.

There is heaps of bonus material that any python fan will love. And plenty to leanr about from the DVD too....like did you know that "John Cleese" really does not like this movie very much at all?

It has some weird bonus features as well, but thats what Python was about....tho I will tell you in advance, skip listning to the "Soundtrack for the lonly" it is quite dull and boring!

It has some great insights to the film, and it is definlty worth buying, if your not into previous python movies, or youve never seen a python movie, then at least give this one a go! It contains some great gags, some shockingly crude material, and some almost over the top sick humour, but all in all, it makes me laugh, and i dont regret buying this DVD for one minute!

Summary: Crude, Irreverent and Spasmodically Brilliant
Review: If you've come to "The Meaning of Life" via "The Life of Brian", be warned - it isn't nearly as good. Not only do the Pythons revert to the sketch format of their TV series and (the excellent) "Holy Grail", they do so at a time when they could barely stand the sight of each other.

Apparently the shoot was not a happy one, but much of that doesn't show on screen.

You should also be warned that the movie is irreverent and crude - at times very crude.

If however, you are familiar with the sketch-based Python malarkies and don't mind the crudity, then "Meaning of Life" has a good deal to recommend it. It is at times brilliantly funny (The Mr Creosote sketch in which an obese man explodes because he eats one wafer too many.); the "Every Sperm is Sacred" musical routine;and "The Universe Song" ("Can we... er... 'ave your liver?") are classic Python moments.

There's a little too much padding. I'm not convinced the appearance of the Grim Reaper at a middle-class dinner party (They all ate the pate) is up there with the most memorable Python moments, and there's a segment where we needlessly follow a French waiter (Eric Idle with an outrageous accent) for several minutes with no real pay-off at the end.

I would certainly recommend it as your last Monty Python movie purchase after "And Now For Something Completely Different", "The Holy Grail" and (the funniest film ever made)"The Life of Brian", but I would also certainly recommend that if you're into slightly surreal, slightly satirical, totally daft, restless comedy, you should watch this.

Summary: Good movie, poor quality.
Review: I love this move, believe me. But, I can't reccomend this to anyone. During the movie you get jagged lines with any horizontal activity. If you buy this dvd you can send it to universal for a replacement, which is cool. But if you want to watch this movie right now, at its best, skip buying this. You won't get it here.

Try Monty Python's Holy Grail for an alternate python dvd if you need your python fix.

Summary: Ever wonder what it is all about?
Review: Well get ready ladies and gentlemen, your patient wait is finally over, Monty Python explains everything from sex to death. Oh and what is everyone whining about, I didn't find the print and sound bad, from all the reviews on here, I thought it was going to be a piece of trash, I loved the movie, the sound and picture were great and if the picture for this is terrible, then the holy grail's print is absolute trash. So boys and girls, what did we learn to day? Always listen to your Uncle Kaushik, because he is always right

Summary: Date for Replacement Disk correction
Review: Thanks for the phone number to call to replace Disk 1. I got a live person (I was expecting a message machine) and got same speech over the phone except they said it will be out in November 2004. I ask them to double check and they said that would be the date. If anyone gets another date I would appreciate a post.

Summary: How to get a replacement for Disc 1
Review: I looked long and hard for an email address to Universal Studio's DVD department. They have hidden it. I had to modify a qurrystring in order to get to the form. I recieved this email with this number to call 1-800-433-4673. To get the replacement. Just for kicks i add the email body. I love haw they call all of our DVD players out of date, as if it our fault they messed up. I hope this helps.

Thank you for contacting Universal Studios. With the advent of cutting-edge
technology in the DVD format, a small number of DVD players do not have the
technical capability to take full advantage of the "Monty Python's The
Meaning of Life" disc format. Universal Studios Home Video has become aware
of a player specific issue which results in the appearance of jagged video
interlacing, on disc 1 only. Disc 2 is NOT affected. Consumers with an
incompatible player may mail back Disc 1 to Universal and receive a
replacement. To obtain a pre-paid USPS envelope in which to mail back the
original Disc 1, please call 1-800-433-4673. Replacement discs are currently
scheduled to be available mid-November 2003.

We appreciate your patronage and hope you continue to enjoy our products.

Summary: Movie gets 4 stars, this DVD transfer gets 0!
Review: If I had known there was such a problem with this transfer, I would've waited until Universal got their sh*t together and fixed the problem. But I was so eager to buy the "Special Edition" that I didn't even think to check the reviews. After all, when's the last time you bought a "Special Edition" DVD that was virtually unwatchable?!

I loved this movie when it came out in theaters in 1983 (my first Python movie), but I've never seen a transfer this bad. Obviously no one at Universal reviewed the movie on DVD before the disks were unleashed on an unsuspecting public. I can't believe Python fans haven't stormed Universal Studios and demanded action!

Just read the other reviews -- I have nothing more to add really. Jagged horizontal lines afflict any horizontal motion on the screen. I wanted my girlfriend to see it for the first time, and it pretty much ruined her experience. We managed to watch through to the end, but it's like seeing your favorite band in concert with constant feedback from the speakers -- a mixture of pleasure and pain.

I think a class-action lawsuit against Universal for selling a seriously inferior product with glaring technical flaws is in order.

Summary: hilarious
Review: while some people i know don't get python's very british humor, this one is maybe a little more understandable and practical to american audiences.like the sex ed. class scene. very funny.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: FULLY WONDERFUL WITHOUT MEANING
Review: This is a wonderful film! With the music, the jokes and the wonderful actors this film is probably one of the best works of the Pythons. From everything to MAKING Fun of religion to a celebration on the battle field, Monty Python is crude, funny and worth it.

Rated R (Frontal women nudity, language, sexual themes, crude jokes)
