Summary: A poignant delight
Review: This film should be required viewing for anyone ( especially Americans )attempting to understand the effect of the war on England's children in the 1940s - it captures the surreal nature of the attack on London and the British willpower that enabled the country to function at that time. The eccentricities of the family members are comical and endearing as life goes on under trying circumstances; empathy is inevitable.

Review: This film truly has it all; an insipid plot, a worthless screenplay, bad acting, low-budget sets, and music which has nothing to do with the plot. I bought this film based upon other reviews, and was completely disappointed. To compare this piece of trash with "Empire of the Sun" is unthinkable.

Hope and Glory is, in my opinion, a typical effort to make historic figures and people seem smaller than life, stripping them of morality, decency, integrity, and all other significant virtues. This is done by Hollywood for the reason that it makes our [late 20th century] depravity look normal in comparison with the past. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

I can't think of a single scene in this film I would like to see again.

Summary: Warning: don't rent this film if you are an idiot
Review: This film won an award from the Los Angeles film critics when it came out in 1987 . . . and for good reason. As the positive reviews note in different ways, it is a classic film which is rich on many levels. However, it does require a rudimentary understanding of history, war, love, rites of passage and the English language. Several negative reviewers whose spelling leaves something to be desired only underscore the underlying sophistication of the film. WARNING: if you only read Cliff Notes, and even then with severe difficulty, this film is not for you. Likewise those who prefer auto-asphyxiation to an actual date.

Review: This film,together with Louis Malle's Au revoiir les enfants,is one of the best look at WW II seen through the eyes of children.It captures the spiret and mood of war time Britain in a marvelously poetic way.The last "thank you Adolf"scene is unforgettable.

Review: This is a film that sticks in your head. Years after I'd seen it, I searched until I could find out what it was again just so I could see it again. Not only is it beautiful, but funny and wonderful. I highly recommend this!

Summary: Such a delight!
Review: This is a wonderful film, set during WWII and experienced through the eyes of ten-year-old Billy Rowan. It recalls the topsy turvey ways of a world where the abnormal conditions of war become commonplace. The men are away at the front and abscenses are not always making the heart grow fonder; the kids lack supervison; and one may be the victim of the next German bombing run. In this world of fear, uncertainty, and confusion, Billy still has the problems of growing up--attaining acceptance of his peers, becomming more independent, learning to throw a proper "googlie" cricket bowl...and of course the problem of girls. He learns that life in not permanent, that his own mother is not immune from heartache, that life, afterall, can hold wonderful surprises even in the midst of war. There are so many outstanding moments in this film that it would be difficult to list them all...a particular favorite of mine is when Billy's grandfather shoots a garden rat--hilarious!

Review: This is one of my most favorite movies of all time. I absolutely love this look at the past thru John Boormans eyes. I've only watched it about 35 times! I'll always hold this film very close to my heart, I treasure it immensley and I'm not exaggerating one bit about that! I loved the portrayel by the actors and loved the background music. Summary: Great Film For Practically Anybody
Review: This is one of my top 20 all time favorite movies. If you can imagine all the trials and tribulations, joys and sorrows and aches and pains of childhood and then imagine going through WWII at the same time you have some idea of what this movie is about. Told primarily through the eyes of a young boy, this movie shows a very personal experience of what the Home Front was like for London civilians. Neighbors get bombed out, shrapnel lies in the streets, friends die, and life somehow still goes on. The movie does a really good job of showing how the war could be a source of wonder to a child living through it and a cathartic experience for the adults. At the same time it can be incredibly funny and this is really why the film is so good. Probably my favorite scene is when the grandfather sends the young boy fishing with orders not to come back until he has caught some fish. A close second is the german jam scene. If you like period films, you'll love this. If you just like good movies, not too serious or too silly or too sad, give this one a viewing. Also, the punting instructions given in the movie actually work. Soon after watching this film, I ended up in Oxford, England and was able to teach myself to punt in less than an hour just from remembering this movie, so it's also educational!

Review: This movie is great. I am 25 and I love it and I loved it when I was 8 and it came out... looking at WWII through the eyes of a child is exciting in a way. Its one of those rare war movies that doesn't center around soldiers but a normal family instead.
