Rating: Summary: THIS DVD WAS A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT Review: Being a big Beatle fan, and a big fan of this movie, I highly anticipated the arrival of this title on DVD. The sound on this DVD is bad, there is absolutely no dynamic range. The volume level seems to hover at the same level through out the film, there is no difference in volume between the scenes when there is a quiet conversation and the scenes where the band is playing. I also own the title on laserdisc and let me tell you, the laserdisc has at least 30 db of dynamic range. While watching this film on laserdisc, you can adjust the level of playback so that the scenes where there is conversation is a comfortable 75 db, and when the band plays it jumps up to an ear thumping 105 db or more. This DVD lacks ooph, the band sounds like their playing in a box. This film deserves a better sound treatment, I highly recommend boycotting the DVD and lets wait till they release it in it's proper state.
Rating: Summary: Just a great, fun movie Review: Being an old codger, I well remember the hysteria of the Beatles' 1964 tour of Australia. There really were screaming, fainting girls (although the ones in the film were paid extras! Phil Collins (later of Genesis) was an extra as a boy in this film - can you spot him!). It's a funny, cheerful movie, with great Beatles music, and very clean! (A reference to Wilfred Bramble as Steptoe senior, "you dirty old man!" in Steptoe and Son).If you can get to see 'The Running, Jumping, Standing Still Film" by Richard Lester, you will see the humor that drove 'A Hard Day's Night'. The short was included on the end of some VHS editions of the film, with an interview with Lester. The Beatles had seen that 11 minute short, had grown up on Spike Milligan and The Goons, and it was natural to do the surreal humor and the semi-smart lines. It isn't Marx Bros. humor, except in humor's universality and the Marx Bros.' brilliance and sense of the ridiculous. Enough analysis: "Analyzing comedy can only lead to tragedy" (Alex Buzo). Enjoy this movie. I do (in my 40s), my children do (under 10s) and for all sorts of reasons. One of may favorite scenes is John's encounter with a woman in a studio corridor "you look just like him", where they hold a conversation that on the one hand is full of meaning, yet on the other hand is totally meaningless. This is Goon Show humor, with surrealism, and just plain funny on a number of levels. BTW, the papers falling from the helicopter at the end of the film are the photos upon which Paul's grandfather forged the lads' signatures, then tried to sell to the fans. Paul throws them out of the chopper as it lifts off, his grandfather being handcuffed to the seat inside the door with the offending photos on his lap. And note John Bluthel as the car thief in the middle of the police chase, stealing the old Humber Super Snipe. Derek Guyler as the police sergeant. The lads playing in the field with joyful abandon having escaped from the studio, including the cricket 'long run up' and 'brilliant diving, running catch' routine we all played as kids, even before the movie. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful direction and photography Review: But this film left me cold. What was cutting edge in the 60s seems so naive now. I can see the joy and wonder experienced by the Beatles, but the film is unsatisfying as I simply failed to become engaged in the plot or the [real life] characters. I'm sure anything less than a 5 star review will be voted down by other reviewers (am I off the island), but I just don't get this. And I do like the Beatles.
Rating: Summary: Excellent I give it a thumbs up! Review: Buy it, you will love it. It's fun with great music
Rating: Summary: I'm using my dad's account again... THIS MOVIE ROCKS Review: BUY THIS MOVIE NOW. That's all I have to say. It has the humor of every single Beatle, and it ROCKS. Paul's grandfather is really funny, and the way they handle him cracks me up. This movie is A CLASSIC. IT IS A MUST NEED. It has hit songs AND awesome quotes. Buy it. It's worth every penny.
"I now declare this bringe open." -John
"If you've lost him, I'll cripple ya!" -Paul
"You're a grown man and you've never used a safety razor?!" -George
"But I'm Ringo Starr! I've got a show to go to! I'm Ringo!" -Ringo. "You know how much I've heard that?" -officer
...and so many more fabulous quotes. Buy it for the comedy, music, quotes AND to see those wonderful boys at it again! (and don't forget about their Liverpool accents!!)
Rating: Summary: Why are asking for my opinion if there's nothing to ask !? Review: C'mon... Are you from THIS world ? Are you trying to find reason to buy this ?!?! 1) If you're beatlemaniac, you shouldn't even be reading this... You were supposed just to point your mouse pointer onto the "buy" icon... :/ 2) Do you like Beatles, but you don't know them pretty well ? Well, here's a good opportunity to know a little about their personality, sense of humor and other stuff... Obviously this is a movie production, this isn't their lifes , in fact ("isn't it a pitty?") but it's a good start... 3) Do you like rock music ? You're facing THE BIGGEST, GREATEST, MOST INCREDIBLE ROCK BAND (actually, the most brilliant music group, in my humble opinion :D) ... You really won't found music here (you have the soundtrack...), but YOU HAVE to know a bit about the personality of these guys, who changed and formed the personality of all who came further... SO BUY IT NOW , FOR GOD SAKE !!! :) remember... TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS.
Rating: Summary: And Why Wasn't I Alive in '64??? Review: Critiquing this film as a piece of cinema, and not as a collection of Beatles tunes is a difficult task. Richard Lester creates some truly beautiful black and white images. Though sometimes the camera can't seem to find its focus. And the images obviously taken on a helicopter as they boys play in the grass outside the television studio shake wildly and distract from the fun being had. The boys, though essentially playing themselves still play it a little stiff as if they are not sure how, exactly, to be themselves. The jokes, for the most part, are still funny, and what little plot there is, still works to give a glimpse into what it was like to be a band on the verge of universal stardom.
To take the movie without the songs is well beyond the point, though. The movie is essentially a market ploy to get the songs heard via a different media. One might not be so forgiving if the songs were not any good, but the music shines throughout. The title song that starts the movie off starts with a struuuum that is instantly recognizable and jumps out and smack you in the face. That is followed by what is arguably the Beatles best tunes. When you add in such songs as: I Should Have Known Better, Tell Me Why, I'm Happy Just to Dance with You, the simple, sweet "If I Fell" and the sing along favorite "Can't Buy Me Love" to the soundtrack then you have a musical that is just shy of remarkable.
The movie was released just before the Beatles came to America and appeared on Ed Sullivan which brought on the madness known as Beatlemania. By this time they were extremely popular as can be seen in the crowds reaction while the boys sings on the television show. It is still shocking to see images of teenage girls screaming, crying and shaking in a manner previously only known to the Pentecostal religion. The soundtrack periodically allow the girls screaming to take over the music allowing us to glimpse what it must have been like to be there. No wonder the boys gave up playing live shortly thereafter.
A Hard Days Night is an excellent glimpse of the Beatles on the cusp of World Stardom. This was before the summer of love, drugs, and the sitar where the Beatles were just trying to be the best band in the world and writing songs that made them so. It is a joy to see them cutting up and being their goofy, hilarious selves. I dare you not to sing and dance along as you watch it.
