Review: Totally fantastic version of "Cats"...recommend this to anyone who likes ALW/TM music, superb dancing and singing, and TS Eliot. If there were more than 5 stars, this would rate them all!

Summary: Memories
Review: This production of cats, although chopped, dubbed and edited, is still wonderful. I say that you should just look past the imperfections and focus on the main thing: entertainment. Veerle Casteleyn, with those big, innocent eyes of hers and angelic voice, makes for the sweetest, most touching Jemima. Jacob Brent as Mistofelees is wonderful, but fans often overlook two other talents: Fergus Logan and Karl Morgan, with their incredible acrobatics, make for astounding performances of Tumblebrutus and Pouncival. Aeva May, with her sense of drama, is quite a memorable Demeter, especially when you see her and Munkustrap nuzzling after the fight with Macavity. Jo Bingham is sooooo cute as Etcetera! Her perky personality and antics really catches your attention. Elaine Paige as Grizabella, excellent!!! Her portrayal of this ravaged old cat leaves not a single dry eye in the house. After the second half of the Jellicle Ball, when she is all alone, Grizabella does a solo dance(probably trying to get the attention of the other cats), but she gives up in the middle, knowing its hopeless. She looks so sad and so lonely standing there all alone at the end of her dance, knowing that they'll never accept her. A truely heartbreaking portrayal, although I do wish her voice was at full power, especially during Memory. A wonderful performance!

Summary: Cats - The Musical (Commemorative Edition)
Review: I teach fine arts in a high scool, and they thought theatre would be uptight and boring. This proved them wrong. It made believers out of them in the magic, beauty, & awe of theatre. They didn't want to go to see the play locally because it was during a holiday & they didn't want to spend the money on somehting so "useless." Now they're begging their parents to give them tickets as an early Christmas gift! They loved it. If it can convert pessimistic teenagers, it's gotta be good!

Summary: When good videos go bad on DVD
Review: I own both the Cats video(best play in da world!) as well as the Ultimate Edition DVD of Cats due to my obsession with the beauty of this great play however there were quite a few things that kind of irked me when I made comparisions to both. One I couldn't help but notice the Ultimate Edition(in my opinion's) totally butchering of the music compared to the video. What the heck is up with the whole adding of dog sounds on the Pekes and the Pollicles, I for one love the cats doing the barking themselves! That and I didn't feel the whole intensity in the music on the Rum Tum Tugger song that gets me dancin to it, I mean I could barely hear the awesome guitar solo. All the tempos to me and a lot of the great sound effects from the video were cut or changed. Anybody know why the heck was that? Anyway I personally think the Cats video edition is the better buy.

Review: This DVD is awesome! We saw the "musical" at Biloxi & thought "OK" then heard Orlando Pops CD & there is just no comparison to Elaine Paige & the other "Ultimate" cast members. None. Buy it!

Summary: Great, a Must Buy!
Review: No matter how good this DVD was, as with my other reviews with the Gundam series ... I cannot give this a perfect score.
The real orchestration was a definate improvement from the machine-made music in the French and Japanese recordings, and if you're a CATS fan, this will complete your collection. The actors were excellent and fitted their roles well-with the exception of Sir John Mills, I thought that they rivaled the Original Broadway Cast. Ken Page comes back from Broadway and fills the role of Old Deuteronomy wonderfully, rivalling the recording of his youth. Michael Gruber and Jacob Brent come from Broadway also, pulling of remarkable performances as Munkustrap (Gruber) and Mistofelees (Brent).
The drawbacks were as follows, to fit the 2 hour time limit, the DVD was cut of a section from "Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer" which showed Drew Varley (Mungo) and Jo Gibbs (Teazer) with swapped positions as a part had been cut out. "Growltiger's Last Stand" was also cut out, I have heard that this was both because Sir John Mills couldn't handle the part and because the time limit wouldn't have worked. The most dramatic part that they cut out was 'Mr. Mistofelees Conjuring Turn!' in which I was most disappointed.
Despite the drawbacks, with Gillian Lynne's choreography and the skilled dubbing over of Veerle Castelyn and Geoferee Garatt, this was a great DVD. However, the credits are interesting, Drew Varley and Jo Gibbs are said to have been dubbed over, however every CATS shrine has a different opinion on the subject.
This is a must buy for every Cats fan, I can't even begin to describe the skillful performances by all of the actors/actresses and the skillful choreography and breathtaking music. Just buy it and think about your decision later! ...

Summary: Worth getting
Review: I confess, I am i complete CATS fan. I love the musical and have seen the video countless times. The dancing is fabulous, the singing and characters were great too. The only thing I found disappointing was that most of the songs were cut short and they took out Growltiger's scene completely, which I thought was one of the best scenes. Overall, it's still a great show to watch on video.
If you have not seen CATS before, or have seen it and didn't enjoy it, I can't blame you. I didn't enjoy it the first time i watched it, but I managed to get the lyrics of the songs off the net and information about the musical, so when I understood it better, I enjoyed it more. You'd be surprised how many websites there are out there dedicated to CATS. So if you didn't enjoy it 'cause you didn't understand it, I recommend getting hold of the lyrics and plot of the musical. It helps!

Summary: The stage production is great, but the DVD...
Review: I cannot bring myself to give this title more than two stars, although I love the stage production of this show. The singing and acting on this DVD are somewhat disappointing, and the original broadway cast sounded much better. The camera work is horrendous, constantly showing close ups when they should be panning out to show the wonderful choreography that was made for the stage. It seems as though there was no modification to the show to make it look good on TV. While I'm sure there are purists who are glad that there weren't any chages ("It's supposed to be JUST like the stage production"), it just looks bad on television.When I saw this version of the musical it was running on PBS. I noticed that a few of the songs were actually missing from the production and it was not complete. I realize that the songs may have been cut by PBS to fit the musical into an allotted time, but if this is not the case, the DVD just isn't worth it.

Summary: A Great Show
Review: I had the extreme pleasure of seeing CATS on Broadway three times. I was sad to see it go. Now with the DVD, I can watch it again and again and again and again. And this time I don't have to pay $90 bucks for a seat! Bravo!
