Summary: Reliable and fast laptop
Review: My only problem has been with XP, the computer is running fine. Yes, it does get hot and keeping it on the laptop over twenty minutes is too long. Much better than the 4 laptops I had before. Good buy especially with the BestBuy rebate.

Summary: Good overall laptop
Review: Relative to March 2003 standards, this laptop has good performance, and reliability. The only issue I've had with it is - like everyone else, apparently - after I'd had it for about a year, it started overheating and shutting down in the middle of graphics-intensive applications. It was difficult to troubleshoot, and Sony's tech support consisted of useless canned "help" messages.

Once I realized the nature of the problem, I went to a local superstore and purchased an inexpensive Bytecc laptop cooler. (I also purchased a mac daddy 200W speaker system for it, but that's another story.) That solved the problem, and I recommend everyone get one. They're cheap, and they'll save you a lot of time, trouble, and potentially, $$. You can probably even find them on Amazon.

Other than that, I've been banging away at it for about 16 hrs/day for a year now, and it's been a joy to use. I'd get one again.

Summary: Warning do not buy Sony laptops. bad design and worst servic
Review: same problems like the other buyers that review here. Near the warranty expiration date I realized that sony have given me the turn around to delay my claim.
It turns off and it is a deffecive battery that was recalled. after the delay they said they could not replace it.
It turnes off and realize it was an addtional problem: the fan goes out after a year. It heats up in about 10 to 15minutes.
The support is via electronic system and then after one hour of trying with emails to the manufacturer was tolt to send it to service to San Francisco paying the cost and paying for the parts and repair and no warranty they will fix it permanently.
They took about two weeks to answer my emails.

Summary: Sony PCG-GRZ515G
Review: Terrible! It overheats and customer service don't admit there's a widescale Problem.

They tell you not to use broadband, scanners, printers but charge you £37 because they claim it's your fault the fan gathers too much dust and they've had to clean it (twice) in the space of a month!

Summary: Treat it right, and it'll treat you right.
Review: The GRZ630 is my very first laptop I own. Won't be my last. I'm an aspiring animator so I pretty much pushed this machine to it's fullest potential. I've used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, and AfterEffects on this tough cookie. I've also pushed 3D Studio Max on this as well. To my surprise, it runs each program quite well. Not the best, but manageable. My last major projects I've worked on was doing a stop motion animated piece. Using Adobe Premier to capture and render out the movie files was "fine". Transferring and compiling the movie files into Adobe AfterEffects was "ok". I also imported music and sound fx into the movie also. All trucked along without crashing. Now for the true test; playing the final renders while having Adobe AfterEffects open, crashed my CPU. But I blame it on the mesely 512 RAM they give you. I made some 3D renders on 3D Studio Max and it ran "fine". My suggestion, just install more RAM into this babie, and she'll take good care of you to the end. At least 1 Gig of RAM if you can. More than 768 if possible. Basically this machine has limits and know them. So don't have more than 2 different "hefty" applications open at once while trying to play movies. It will crash. Not a super-computer! Just buy more RAM for it and you'll be ok. It hasn't power outage on me yet, except for the short life battery dying on me. One last note: running the machine on battery life slows down the processor slightly. So use the AC Adaptor when possible for maximum performance. Why the 3/5 stars, cuz the lack of RAM. More RAM people!

Summary: Bad Luck or Bad Design?
Review: The laptop over-heated, and as a result, its motherboard died while the unit was on after 3 months of light usage. The warranty also doesn't cover if you don't have the original receipt according to the rep I spoke with. (while Toshiba doesn't require you to have the original receipt for the warranty.) It was a nice laptop, but I'm very unsatisfied about this very incident. And their phone tech support is not too good. They've hired bunch of reps that don't have clue what they're doing. They just read what it says on the screen. Also I had time understanding their English.

Edit: I just received the laptop back from Sony, and many other problems started happening. My Fn fuction keys are not working anymore, which means I cannot change the brightness and contrast of my LCD, volume, and video out. Plus, my fan rattles excessively. I was on the phone with rep for 3 hours and no help. I explained the problem and what might have caused this to the rep, but he just ignored me and kept reading what was on his screen. I am looking forward to sending this laptop in for another repair!!

Summary: Don't Believe the Overheating and Loudness Boloney!
Review: The only reason why this particular computer overheats so often is a design flaw. Without getting too techincal, air particles like dust or even pet hair can accumulate inside your laptop and prevent the heat sink from cooling off. This causes your computer to overheat. Since this is easily fixable, it should not be an issue. All you have to do is get someone to spray air into your computer through the fan hole in the back (you can even do it yourself with a can of air). Just make sure you do it outside, because I guarantee that a lot of stuff will come flying out! I am speaking from experience--I was really peeved when my computer started to overheat andthe fan was really loud and turn off randomly less than a year after I bought it, but when I got it aired out it went back to normal. So don't listen to these other people! They just didn't know that their computers were dirty!

Summary: My first Sony laptop, but not my last!
Review: This is a great laptop. I have had it for a month now without any problems at at all. It replaced a Fujitsu laptop bought three years ago that was a nightmare from day one. This one is fast, beautiful, and reliable right out of the box. It comes with tons of software. There are many thoughtful touches that other companies need to emulate. Some of those touches are puting most of the ports in the back so when its on your desk you dont see any wires, the overall feel of quality, the awesome screen, memory stick port (if you have Sony Digital Camera, you'll LOVE it!) feet on the bottom to prop up the computer to keep it cool and tilted towards you, etc. There are a couple of things that made me give it four instead of five stars, yes it does seem noisy at times as others have said, and no USB 2.0 ports, come on! What is the reason there? Needs more documentation, yes it is a sign of the times not to give people paperwork, but when you spend{money}00 on something a little paper work is nice. I got more paperwork on my ... toaster than this. The only other thing I would have liked is integrated wireless. But you start adding things and the price of course goes up. Overall a tremendous computer that makes me want to buy Sony again. Buy this computer, you'll love it! Way to go Sony.
