Summary: Customer Service is Horrid
Review: My dealings with Sensory Science customer support have shown them to be both incompetent and unethical. I first ran into problems with my player in December 2000. I went to the web site looking for answers. There were none, so I called customer support (left message on voice mail and never got a response) and sent an e-mail (also never got a response). When I finally got in touch with customer support after repeated tries (three months later!, in March), they were miserable. There were 2 supposed RaveMP "experts." One never returned my call; the other was no expert.

I told the "expert" I was getting a "file error" on my unit and I he began to get my address information. I thought they were going to file an RMA, but he said the repair cost would be $99.95. I asked for a manager who reduced it to $49.95, which was nice. Nonetheless, I indicated I wanted to see if I could do anything myself in order to save the $50. The manager sent me back to the "expert." He indicated that the "file error" message meant the board was bad and I had to send it in for repair, period. There was nothing I could do.

While trying to decide if it was worth $50 to get it fixed, I figured out you could flash format the memory and fix the problem. The unit works again. I called the "expert" back and asked him why he didn't tell me to flash format the memory. He indicated it was only a temporary fix, and he knows it will fail again, that my board must be swapped out. Apparently he thinks the function of customer service is to serve customers to the repair department for a quick $100, rather than serve the customers with appropriate information to allow them to make an informed decision. I will never deal with this rude arrogant company again, and I certainly would not recommend anyone else to either.

Summary: You Get More For Your Money
Review: I never owned a MP3 player, though I would consider myself pretty high tech (if you know what i mean). So, for my birthday, I was excited when I got the Rave Mp3. It was easy to set up the software, and use the controls. I am a music fan, and I had enough with hauling CD's on all of my trips. With the MP3, I am able to download songs onto my computer, and then quickly transfer them to the MP3 player. I have had it for a few months, and I am very happy with it. It can hold about 15 songs. For THOSE OF YOU WHO LIKE TO CARRY A KAZILLION SONGS, THIS ISN"T FOR YOU! I would recommend buying a MP3 with more memory. I have had no problems with this MP3, but personally, 15 songs isn't enough and I am recently searching for a new one. Besides that, the Rave has no flaws and $100 for 64 MB is a lot for your money! I am very impressed!

Summary: Don't spend the money!
Review: My son bought this with Christmas $$$ he recieved over the holidays. When we got it here we discovered that the software is clunky and that are many hoops to jump through. You must set your printer port to 0378, and a bunch of other nonsense. It was not as it had implied, plug and play. The software would begin a transfer and then stop. With no explaination. It just quit. We never did get the thing to work and ended up returning it. The one good thing I have to say, is that Amazon made it easy to return. When I asked online for this procedure, they gave me a printable screen to print the return lable with, and I sent the item back. Look somewhere else for your mp3 player. the raveMP was a big dissappointment.

Summary: great value
Review: I got one of these for chrismas, it's easy to use and sounds good. It plays all my MP3s, but sounds a little off when it plays VBR files. I can upload files to it at 170-180 kB/s, so lack of USB isn't a big deal.

Summary: Good Entry-Level MP3 Player
Review: The first few hours after I received the raveMP 2100 were frustrating. First, I learned that the software is not compatible with Windows 2000, which I use at work; it works only with Windows 95 and Windows 98.

Second, after I successfully loaded the software on my home computer (Windows 98), configuration of the parallel port was my next obstacle. This is a necessary step, I believe, and can be frustrating if you don't know where to look on your computer to perform this configuration.

Finally, after I successfully established the connection between my computer and raveMP 2100, it appeared to successfully download several MP3 files to the player. Alas, on the player, I received a "file error" message.

I sent an e-mail to Sensory Science through its Web site but still have not received a reply. I called the company's support number (a toll call) and received good instructions (essentially needed to reset the player).

Now my player is up and running and I am very satisfied with the ease of the file transfer process as well as with the sound quality (near-CD). In other words, although I believe Sensory Science can add additional troubleshooting content to its manual, once I was up an running, I have had no problems with the player. Both the player's user interface and the desktop software are intuitive, and I am impressed by the sound.

Summary: UGH!
Review: The only thing I have to say about this product is don't get it! I received for free from a promotion and that is all the money you should spend on it. The sound quality is awful. All you hear is static. The thing broke only after two months of my brother using it. I would not recommend wasting your money on it. Invest a little more and get the Nomad II or the Rio 500. I have both and the Rave does not even compare.

Summary: Good for car cd players-bad w/ headphones
Review: I have this and bought it to hook into my Alpine car CD player. It sounds good in there. It sounds AWFUL if you listen to it by headphones. So, if you want it for personal listening do not buy!

Summary: Sweet.
Review: This is a sweet deal. The functionality of this MP3 unit is excellent, with simple software, easy, intuitive controls (I never read the manual) and a pretty darned good display. It gets the highest marks for having a full 64 Megs built-in, for having *the best* sounding earbuds ever and for costing under a hundred bucks. The voice memo recorder and PDA features are nice little extras. The only real drawback is the parallel port connection for downloads. It is much slower than a USB, but if your computer has no USB port, you are in luck here.
