Summary: Tim Robertson MyMac.com Review
Review: My first impression upon seeing the 2100 series speaker from Altec Lansing was "sweet!" Yes, I like the look of these speakers, but looks are but one of the many important factors into making your decision on what speakers to buy.

Sounds quality, I hope, is the number one factor. In that regard, the 2100's sound great. While not as loud as the ... Monsoon PlanarMedia 9 speakers, they do have about the same clarity of sound. That is to say, very good in both audio reproduction and imaging.

The 2100 series are a three-piece speaker system, consisting of two satellite speakers, and one powered sub-woofer. Like most other computer speaker systems, this one also has a remote control (wired) that has a Mute button, as well as two volume controls. Nice, but what I especially enjoyed was the metal stand the remote control rests on. This may seem a small thing, but not after you have had to deal with the remotes on most other computer speakers, which usually lay on the desk. The remote stand shows forethought on Altec Lansing's part.

The satellite speakers are very small, half the size of the Monsoon speakers reviewed a few weeks ago. If you have a cluttered desk, and a pair of large flat-panel speakers would have a hard time finding a home on your desk, take a look at these. Each speaker is set into a metal stand, making them harder to accidentally move. Even with the metal stand, the speakers are still tiny.

They say good things come in small packages. This is proven true here, as I was really impressed with the sound quality of the two desktop speakers. The sub-woofer is equally great sounding, but is anything but small.

The sub-woofer sports not one, but two 4" speakers, which do a respectable job of reproducing low base sounds. The sub is made from sturdy, well-crafted wood. They are also ported, meaning better bass response.

Obviously, ... speakers are not going to rival a home entertainment system in pure volume, clarity or base, but the sound level the average computer user will listen to the 2100's at will not be disappointed.

Specs:
Power: 35W RMS ‹ 50 WATTS total peek power. (Look for distortion when pushing anything close to their peek.)
Front Speakers: 5.5W/Channel at 4 ohms.
Subwoofer: 17.5W at 4 ohms.

Overall impression: I like these speakers! If I were doing a head-to-head comparison with the aforementioned Monsoon's, I would have to give the Monsoon speakers a slight edge in sound quality. In workmanship, the winner would be the Altec Lansing 2100.

A good value speaker that sounds more expensive than they are. A true audiophile will want to look elsewhere, and spend more money. For the average computer user who wants better sound than the built-in speakers on your computer, these will make you smile.

Summary: Not worth the price
Review: I paid full price for these and have only kept them because of the small satellite speakers and the shape of the subwoofer; these just happened to fit the spaces I had.

There is little midrange. For as large a subwoofer as this is, the actually output is quite muddy and getting the right balance can be difficult. There is no left right balance or general tone control...the bass level is on the back of the subwoofer (very bad idea).

For my setup, having the main level and power on a remote control was perfect, since the speakers are not in arms reach, which is where most systems have the controls.

I would look at other systems unless the specific design features are essential, as they were for me.

Summary: Altec Lansing 2100`s
Review: I love them in other words a lot of bang for the buck it may just be my flimsy desk of the acoustics under it but they really thump although one downfall was the really low frequency bass (60Hz and below) didnt come in too well but i was suprised at the beautiful sound quality that they had if you are in to rap, techno, rock,or new age these are the way to go they are sturdy and powerful and i only paid 50 bucks for them at a computer outlet so they were worth it to me

if you have any comments about them or any other stereo equipment (i am a qualified expert)I would like to hear them at...
or write to me at: 1034 old graysville Rd.

Summary: A new low for A.L.
Review: Its not so much that these are low quality speakers--the sats have survived many drop tests. And they're actually pretty loud. The problem lies in the use of multiple small drivers in the sats rather than a 2-way high/mid configuration. Also, the subwoofer, while powerful, has horrible clarity. The result is lacking midrange and muddy bass--acceptable for games, but certainly not for music.

Also, the 1/8" inputs kept giving me trouble. They'd come loose at random. I suspect they were defective. In any case, I replaced them with 1/4" jacks. Problem solved.

If you're a gamer, don't plan to listen to music, and you can find a really good deal on these, they might be an okay choice. I got mine free, and given that, I'm happy enough with them. But, they're certainly not worth the retail price. Do yourself a favor and buy some quality speakers from Klipsch or Telex.

Summary: Fantastic sound for all your audio / video / PC needs
Review: I use this speaker system for all my DVD films, CD audio, and occasionally I move it to the PC for games with great sound effects. It is superior to systems costing ten times as much (compared side-be-side with Bang & Olufsen!) The funny thing is I bought this system thinking I would only use it for PC gaming -- but the sound was so good I quickly moved it away from the PC and over to my DVD theater where it stays most of the time. I even pack these in my suitcase when I'm traveling because hotel movies & TV are so much better with theater-quality sound. (OK, that's a little nuts, I know.) Why spend a lot of money on a "home theater" system? Listen to these first, it really is an incredible value.

Summary: Looks nice - sound and features are average.
Review: I bought the 2100 set because it looks very nice, and most of the online reviews said it sounded very good. I reckoned this would be a very sweet package. I'm a little disappointed in the sound quality though. The two sattelites give excellent highs but the midsection is weak. I listen to mostly rock and metal, and often the male voices and guitars sound like they were standing outside the studio screaming in while making the recordings: they are not very present. The only adjustments you can make on the set itself is the volume of the subwoofer at the back of the box.

Now I have fixed most of this with the equalizer in my music player, and the regular rock music sounds ok now. But the lower screams and superheavy guitarsound in albums like Life of Agony's "River Runs Red" still don't pack the punch they should. Of course the drumbeats can still pound like an earthquake when necessary thanks to the sizable subwoofer, but it's the midsection that is lacking.

Added to this problem are the weird volume controls on the wired remote: there is no indication of how far you are, there are just two buttons for less and more. Add to that the strange quirks that the volume level is reset to its lowest whenever to power is turned off and the absence of a headphone jack. Take this all together and it seems like a small effort was taken to keep the end user in mind when designing this system, and producing a balanced sound must not have been a major goal.

I give it 3 stars for good looks, solid construction and decent sound quality after a slew of adjustments. But if you don't care for the looks, I wouldn't recommend choosing this system.

Summary: GREAT FOR SMALL ROOMS
Review: If you live in a dorm or a barracks, this is a nice speaker system to have. The right and left speakers are very small, making it very easy to find a place to put them. Also, the supports for these speakers are made of metal, not cheap plastic.

The volume control is a problem area, however, which is why I flicked off a whole star. Every time you turn the speakers on you have to adjust the volume according to your needs. There is no visual representation of where you are when it comes to volume.

One of the selling points of this speaker system is the fact that it is so easy to connect, right out of the box. In a matter of 2 steps I had my speakers hooked up to my Playstation 2, ready to go.

Until you get your mansion and the money to buy the Nakamichi Soundspace 21, these Altec Lansing speakers should serve you well.

Summary: stop searching, get these!
Review: i looked for the best 4.1 speaker system for around $100 and these are them! the sub is very powerful, and total wattage is 140. blows away your stock speakers. the satilites are surprisingly small, only 2"x2"x8". they provide all the highs and a majority of the mids. the sub does its job well for deep clear bass. the speaker cords are plenty long to position those speakers all around. the remote is also a great touch with several options avaliable right where you want it. a definite solidly built system by altec lansing.

Summary: Good!
Review: It's a good audio system for a room or an apartment. I live in the dorms and I have hard time turning the bass on coz it's really loud. It could shiver my whole floor. Watching DVD's are good with this system too. The remote control [is not great], I thought it was a cordless one but NO!! and moreover it only has the volume control so whenever I have to change the BASS, I have to get ... up! :o(
The 4100 has a good remote control system with bass, treble and volume control (I think). Overall experience +positive!
Cheers

Summary: Look great, sound marginal.
Review: I put these side by side with the Altec ATP3s, and there was no comparison. The 2100s cost twice as much and sounded half as good.

At the volume level I use in my office, the highs on the 2100s were very flat and the sub was muffled.

I'm still looking for the best solution, but the 2100s were not it.

(although they look great!)
