Summary: Good product, lousy company
Review: While I think that the Zen is a good MP3 player, the company is run by morons. I had a very difficult time loading the software onto my PC. It did some horrible thing that not only did not work, it rendered my computer almost useless. The tech help guy's suggestion was to wipe out my hard drive and start a new. Woh. I thought that was drastic and instead just used the System Restore feature in Windows and was back up and running properly with NO help from Creative Inc. Tech help then further "helped" me load everything and wound up wiping out the songs they originally had loaded on the player. Not cool. They said it could be easily switched with a new player by sending it back to the company. You would have thought this took rocket science. Phone call after phone call, e-mail after e-mail, I finally received the new player. If I had known of all this ignorant drama, I never would have bothered with the switch in the first place. Thankfully, the player works well, but I would not recommend assistance from the company for anything.

Summary: Not quite there,
Review: Connection; Not recognised by 98se USB 1.1. Checked USB port with a printer, a camera, a flash card reader and scanner all recognised instantly. Installed USB 2 still no joy. All other devices still ok. Checked it on another 98se machine where it was recognised but would not transfer data. XP recognised it without intalling the creative software.

Online Help. Only works if the device has been recognised. Another customer reviewer after being rude about other people with USB problems fails to enlighten us as to the fix.

Data files. Beware if you intend to use it to transfer folders containing files between computers. The box says it can store data files, true, but doesnt tell you it cant handle folders, also doesn't tell you it is not treated as a drive you only find all this out when you install and read the .pdf manual after you have bought it. I wanted it to carry data between 3 machines whilst listening to MP3's.

Track forward back button is upside down, up moves you down and down is up. As the device and its buttons are nearly symetrical its confusing to operate in your pocket especially volume v track +-

Sound quality is very good but let down by the flimsy headphones.

Design is very good. It is on the verge of being superb, improve its file handling and its a winner unless I am the only person in the world carrying data around. I am a freelance lighting designer using cad working all over the UK and abroad, physically unable to carry a laptop about. The charger is refreshingly small. Finally does registration really require date of birth, phone number address and gender (all mandatory)

Summary: I do NOTrecomend The Zen!
Review: The idea was good, but the emplimentation Is BAD. First of all the zen's Buttons are TOO small. Second of all (maybe it's just me), but It has a very un-natural feel when you hold it in your hand. My Nomad ZEN also Quit after the first day. When I connected it Too my computer, and started running the PlayCenter software to transfer my MP3 collection to the Zen, It worked fine at first, but the Zen started to get very hot, and then when I tried to Syncronize my MP3s with the software It just Quit. Now it will not turn on or do anything. Maybe it was just a flaw in the one I got or something, but I am very angry that I only got one day to use something that I paid $230 for. Oh, the headphones have a very Cheap feal to them. Based on my experience I do NOT recomend the ZEN at all.

Summary: Beware of fragile hard drive and short warranty
Review: On April 16, 2003 I wrote a 5 star review of the Zen, raving about the interface and sound.

However, my unit just stopped working. I called Tech support who diagnosed it as a hard drive failure and said that since it was beyond the 3 month warranty period, I would have to return it and could expect to pay $100 for a replacement hard drive. That I'm giving it 2 stars now is a testimony to how much I liked it before its premature death.

I've read the reviews of the new IPOD and it seems like they have improved the interface to allow making playlists on the fly now and, at least according to one Amazon reviewer, the hard drive is extremely durable (unlike myself, he mentioned that he'd dropped his unit numerous times and it keeps on playing.)

Summary: Excellent all-round
Review: Maybe I'm lucky, but I've had no qualms whatsoever with this. The software is slow, but stable, tranfers are fast, battery life is in excess of 10 hours, sound quality is second-to-none, and it's a robust bit of kit. It feels good, it looks good, and it sounds great. Buy it, buy it now.

For those saying it doesn't have a track seek function: yes it does. Upgrade to the latest firmware, and hold previous or next. Be amazed, this is now perfect.

As a sidenote, for those with the neccessary skills, it's easy to install a bigger hard drive (it uses standard notebook HDDs). Mine is now a 60GB, all for less than the price of a 20GB iPod. Save your money, and buy better.

Summary: A pretty nice mp3 player.
Review: My family got high speed internet and I needed a place for all the songs I downloaded into the computer, and I bought this mp3 player. First of all, a bad thing about the "Zen" is the software. The program that came with it forced you to import your songs into it then into your player rather than from where it was stored on you computer. It would also put some songs in incorrectly (i.e. missing information). The player itself is pretty good and had only "crashed" few times, and when that happens, I just restart it, with no files lost/damaged. The scrollwheel and button layout is very simple and easy to use. This player is not too heavy or big compared to the ipod and can fit easily into a back pocket. I have not owned any other mp3 players, so I cannot accuratly judge which is better, but for what it's worth I like this one very much now that I bought Red Chair's "Notmad" software for it. One last thing, the Zen comes with "street style" headphones, which seem to be pretty popular nowadays. I bought my own, but, if you like that type, have a ball!

Summary: Go with an IPod
Review: I bought the Nomad, thinking that I would save money and get similar quality to the Apple IPod. I couldn't have been more wrong.

First off, the Creative transfer software is extremely lousy and I had to pay [money] to get a third-party solution that is only marginally better. Second, this thing is huge compared to an IPod. Third, it crashes! What good is an MP3 player that locks up on you?!? I've written to Creative many times, and all they've ever given me in return is a shrug and an "oh, well, better luck next time." ... Pay the extra [money] for an IPod and save yourself a giant headache.
