Summary: Excellent Transfer to DVD
Review: I have seen this movie in VHS, Beta, and now on DVD. I found it to be an excellent transfer of a supremely funny movie. My only regret is there were no SPECIAL features. Hence 4 stars instead of 5

Summary: The funniest movie of 1988
Review: I laughed until I almost fell out my seat. Its fun to watch a movie when you know the actors are having a good time making a picture. If nothing else watch Kevin Kline in his Academy award winning role that he deserved hands down.

Summary: Not Monty Python, but funny
Review: I LOVE Monty Python AND John Cleese teaches part-time here at Cornell, so when he gave a talk and mentioned the plot of AFCW, I thought I'd check it out. It was great seeing a couple of the Python troup in a non-Python role. Be warned, although the movie is very funny (7.8 out of 10) it's not at all the same type of humour as Python.

My absolute favorite part, which doesn't give anything about the movie away, is near the end when John Cleese imitates an American accent. Usually we see comedians here making fun of British, French, and other foreign accents, so it was fun to see someone try to imitate us here in the States.

I'd say this is a MUST RENT no matter what and a MUST BUY for anyone who likes British humour and/or wants to see Cleese do something different.

Summary: Great Movie - OK DVD
Review: I love the movie "A Fish Called Wanda". It is one of my all time favorite movies. If you haven't seen it, go rent/buy it - there is no better time to see it, now that it is on DVD!

Therefore, this is a review of the DVD - not the movie. The DVD has a very good presentation of the movie - the best you can watch at home (as mentioned above). However, the sound is lacking - dull mono. Maybe this movie was originally recorded in mono, but I would be surprised.

Next there is the lack of extras - you get the trailer and "cast notes" but virtually nothing else... just a dumb fish screen saver.

I don't mean to be so down on this DVD, it isn't terrible, it is just a disappointment to think of all of the unrealized potential. First of all, there is the sound. Then, there was no behind the scenes featurette, no comentaries, no deleted scenes, nothing. With Kline, Cleese, Palin and Curtis in the cast, there could have been all kinds of killer extras. But there wasn't...

At this point I would give this DVD 3 stars. However, it earns an extra star because MGM bowed to pressure and put it out in Widescreen. They originally planned on P&S only.

So thanks a lot, MGM, but now get busy on a "Collectors Edition".

Summary: Don't Call Me Stupid.
Review: I measure comedic films on whether they are funny or not. A Fish Called Wanda, in my opinion, is a classic in this sense. This film is a joy to watch, with great performances by Kevin Kline (best supporting actor), John Cleese, Michael Palin and Jamie Lee Curtis. Fierce Creatures is not a sequel to A Fish Called Wanda, so be forewarned. It's not as good either. A Fish Called Wanda is a must have for any film collector.

Summary: Funny But Dated Film, Horrible Transfer To DVD
Review: I remember really liking this movie when it came out in the 80's but then again I was about 16 at the time...It's still pretty funny but not a great movie, certainly not as good as people raved back in the day. The low rating I gave this movie is due more to the EXTREMELY poor quality DVD release of the film; it looks like it was taken straight from an overplayed videotape & the sound is just as poor, rent it if you want to revisit this film but don't bother buying the DVD!

Summary: A Laugh Out Loud RIOT
Review: I still cackle every time I watch "Wanda" with its screwball story, its zany characters and its funny one-liners that get me every time. The ensemble cast is tremendous, with Kevin Kline in his all time film role (and OScar winner) as Otto, while Jamie Lee Curtis proves her own comedic mettle in her scene-chewing moments with Cleese and Palin. The dialogue is simply hysterical, and still likeable, which I think is truly rare in a film. Without all that much gimmickry, the cast and plot work without a hitch (or rather, with so many hitches, your head'll be swimming with possibilities!) But certain scenes are standouts - the dropping pianos, the language fetishes, and especially the interplay between Kline and Palin, who lash out at each other in unpredictable, pure comedy heaven moments! You're guaranteed to love this "Wanda-r" - she's something else!

Summary: Stands the test of time
Review: I still remember the first time I saw that crazy heist caper called A Fish Called Wanda. My high school drama class went to see a sneak preview double feature of Wanda and Monkey Shines (which I will only go as far as to say that it was pretty awful) and I was floored.

I knew about Monty Python and has all the episodes that my PBS affiliate would broadcast, but was relatively unfamiliar with any work the troupe's members had done outside of the series (I don't even think I had seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail yet), except for a late-night cable run-in with Michael Palin's The Missionary, a mild sex comedy about a missionary and a home for fallen women.

I had no idea what to expect. Palin had always been my favorite Python (and still is), so I was very curious to see what he would do outside the Python realm. I got more than I bargained for.

Written by John Cleese from a story by Cleese and director Charles Crichton (various Ealing comedies including The Lavender Hill Mob), A Fish Called Wanda is a comedy about four crooks (Jamie Lee Curtis: Wanda, Kevin Kline: Otto, Tom Georgeson: George, and Michael Palin: Ken) who are all trying to double-cross each other by linking with other members of the group. Wanda in particular has the cards stacked in her favor, as she is--in one way or another--attempting to seduce all three men.

The humor comes from several directions. As the old lady is the only one who can ID any of them, George asks Ken to eliminate her. Unfortunately, he keeps killing her pet dogs instead--one at a time. As an animal lover, this leaves Ken in no end of distress. Very black humor, indeed. Meanwhile, Otto is trying to get information from Ken by pretending to be gay. Ken isn't either, but Otto doesn't seem to care. He continues to come on to him. (Kline won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar that year for his performance as Otto.)

Surprisingly, A Fish Called Wanda has stood up well over time. It is still one of the films that I continue to return to for dependable belly laughs. The promotional short for the film was one of the funniest things I saw that year and Wanda deserves a full DVD treatment. Until then, though, I guess I'll have to make do.
