Rating: Summary: This book is brilliant Review: An invaluable tool for the working artist! Especially useful for those just starting out, this book will grow with you. After 2 1/2 years I am still using it as a reference book on a weekly basis. Art Marketing 101 walks you through the steps of what it takes to become a successful artist. It gives you the basic steps for every aspect of the business, from setting up your office space to hanging your work to how to write a resume. Although no one subject is covered in depth, it gives you all the basics and then refers you to other books on the subject in question for a more in-depth look. I believe that I will be using this book as a reference for many years to come. I highly recommend it!

Rating: Summary: Great Introduction for the Beginning Artist! Review: Constance Smith and Allen Hollingsworth have created a wonderful introductory guide for those of us who are entering the art profession. As an art student, I've noticed that many institutions and universities fail to teach the fundamentals of advertising and marketing one's art. Even though we learn the techniques of painting and drawing, many are left clueless as to begin an art career. This guide gives a thorough overview for the beginning art student in an easy-to-read format as well as related suggestions for further reading throughout each chapter topic. I would definitely recommend investing in this guide for the beginning art student to have an idea of what is to be expected when studying art. When compared to Art & Reality : The New Standard Reference Guide and Business Plan for Actively Developing Your Career As an Artist by Robert J. Abbott, this book is a vital stepping stone to Abbott's more thorough explanations and recommendations. Otherwise, one would be lost trying to understand Abbott's in-depth reading material. Both guides are excellent, but Art Marketing 101 is necessary to read first, before you jump to Abbott's "400" level.
Rating: Summary: Informative and Easy to Understand Review: Constance Smith provided a book that is very informative and accessable. There are many creative ideas and she does a great job of covering the basics. The focus of the book is primarily toward commercial not academic art but there is still plenty enough material to make it worth the time of any artist whether they be the most conceptual artist or a self taught folk artist. I very much appriciated that Chapters on "The Psychology of Success", "Business Basics" and "Sales Techniques." These areeas are seldom covered enough but are very important.
Rating: Summary: Art for arts sake Review: I found this book a great starting point, out of school and trying keep creating and supporting myself with my creations. This book allows you to take the next step of thinking and open your mind to selling art. Good begining book I wish I got while in school.
Rating: Summary: "Must have" for ANY artist - new or pro! Review: I have been a professional artist for many years and this is information that I have heard many times, but it's concise, and easy to read. I am always preaching to art students -- any one for that matter -- to take business and merchandising courses! We may want to be an artist but we need to earn a living at it! This book brings it all home. I find myself reading it over again and again, reinforcing the old info and putting even more of the dreaded business / merchandising ideas into practice. It's a must for ANY artist!
Rating: Summary: Finally! A book that answers questions! Review: I must admit I have read numerous marketing books for art-related ventures and this is the very first out of all of them that actually addresses what is involved, how you get started, WHY you need to do a certain thing and what sort of resources you're going to need. It also has helpful checklists at the end of each chapter to keep you on track. A definite must have for the reference bookshelf for any serious artist/craftsperson.
Rating: Summary: Better Choices Are Out There! Review: In preparation for teaching a class in marketing for creative professionals I purchased this book. Although it says it was revised in 2000, I found some egregious errors, one of which was a listing for a book that's out of date and out of print. Carroll Michael's book, How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist, is a far better reference and empowers the artist in his/her efforts. Smith tends to buy into some of the 'starving artist' concepts and, instead of cheering artists on, creates some real barriers to success.
Rating: Summary: Check it out at the bookstore before you buy it Review: Out of all the art marketing books available, this one is not nearly as good as, say, Carol Michael's books or Daniel Grant's books. If I were an artist just starting out, I'd look at this book at the bookstore and compare it to several other art marketing books. There are many books out there that are better than this one.
Rating: Summary: Great resource Review: There are a lot of artist out there that need to know what this book has to offer. It gives advise on how to organize yourself to making a sale. I found a lot of the information very helpful. As an artist I know my art, this book gives insights on all the rest. Pricing, marketing, licensing, grants etc. Also gives other resources that detail specifics of the art industry if you are not finding what you need or need more in depth information. I highly recommend this to an artists looking for insight on how the art industry works and how to work within the art industry in a professional capacity.
