Rating: Summary: Best Book on Understanding & Applying Impressionist Theory Review: I have read many books trying to understand Impressionist theory. None of them have been as easy to understand as this one by Lois Griffel. Her explanation of theory, her examples, her lessons, and her explanations following the steps taken in her own paintings are those of a gifted, experienced teacher who understands the pitfalls that many students fall into. This book would benefit any level of painter, any kind of painter who wishes to better understand light and its effects and how to produce them. Kudos to Lois.
Rating: Summary: A Significant Workshop Between Two Covers Review: If you can not take advantage of participating in one of Lois Griffel's workshops, then this book is a "must have". It offers indepth insights into capturing the true nuiances of impressionistic landscapes as only a master artist can present them. Clear and uncluttered explainations on how to capture the excitment and radiance of light in your landscape paintings fill every page. The true test of the value of any instructional book is the amount of use it gets. My copy of "Painting the Impressionist Landscape" is a frequent source of instruction and inspiration - as the paint smeared pages will attest. Don't pass this up if you are a serious landscape painter seeking to become a landscape artist.
Rating: Summary: "Painting the Impressionist Landscape" Review: If you want to advance your understanding of color theory; if you want to improve your ability to see and render the effects of light on your subjects; and if you want to create better paintings, then Lois Griffel's book, "Painting the Impressionist Landscape", is just what the art-doctor ordered. For me, Lois Griffel opened the door to new ways of perceiving the world before me, and through her instruction, I discovered more sensitive and rewarding ways to express myself through my painting. In this book "the subject is Light"; and it serves to unlock some of the mystery of the sophisticated manipulation of color by revered Impressionist Painters (like Monet). Ms. Griffel, herself a master painter and gifted teacher, presents a methodical series of lessons to guide student-artists to a heightened awareness of light, and a more effective use of color in their own painting. Each lesson is appropriately illustrated with examples of paintings in various stages of development for further understanding of the advanced ideas set forth in each chapter. "Painting the Impressionist Landscape" is not so much a "how to paint" book, as it is a "how to see color/light, understand it, and paint it" book. It is not a book for easy reading. It is a workbook for those who want to work at seeing and painting better. This book is a masterpiece and a must for advanced artists and serious beginners alike.
Rating: Summary: Excellent oil painting book Review: It is one of the best books I have to learn about oil painting. It helps me tremendously in seeing colors and light that I never seen before. The steps are detailed and easy to follow. It transfers my work from plain and dull to more interesting and reflective. I am still using this book as reference after two years.
I love every piece of art works included in this book. I wish Lois will publish more books like this.
Rating: Summary: A great reference Review: It's a great place to start when you're looking for "more" out of your painting. I was looking for direction and found it in "Painting the Imprssionist Landscape." It gives guidance in both technique and philosophy, some practical "how to's" and plenty more when you're ready for it. You can read it straight through or pick it up and read sections at a time. I'd say it would satisfy many levels of painters, from beginner to advanced. I have recommended it to friends and enjoy having it on my shelf as a handy reference and source of inspiration. Thanks for sharing and the wonderful photos to reference.
Rating: Summary: THE textbook for learning impressionist color Review: Lois goes into great detail explaining the impressionist color and light theory so it will make sense to beginners and advanced students alike. If you are interested in impressionist color, this book will provide you with a great start and then some. The color block studies are detailed step by step, she even provides the exact color used in her examples! Lois is an excellent teacher and it truly shows in her written work. I can't wait for her second book.
Rating: Summary: The most important book on impressionist painting technique. Review: Lois Griffel's "Painting the Impressionist Landscape" is the most important book ever written for learning the techniques to use to create paintings that glow with light and color. It is a far, far better book than others that purport to be similarly useful or helpful. It's sole intent, I believe, is to detail, really detail, what you must do to accurately *see* colors in natural light, and then to apply pigment to mimic those colors. This is not a self-evident task; hence, the book's reason for existence. In fact, I have been using the techniques in this book for several years, with wonderful effect (inluding selling many paintings made with it), and I am still seeing new, often subtle variations of color in unexpected shadows or highlights. Be warned, however: this book is like a cheesecake-- tasty, yes, but really, really dense with information. More packed with useful information than most any other art technique book. You cannot successfully get everything out of it in one sitting, or even one year. Keep using it, and don't give up. Thank you, Ms. Griffel, for giving us this book!
