Summary: Invaluable lessons in Color!
Review: Ms. Griffel enthusiastically teaches the theory of color and light in this book. The lessons learned are invaluable to any artist who wants to capture the essence of light and atmosphere in the landscape. Ms. Grffel's methods teaches the artist to combine color notes to sing together rather than to compete for attention. This book is a complete explanation that can be utilized by the budding artist to the experienced artist. Very inspirational - a must for any landscape artist's collection. This book will not be gathering dust as it is a great reference
for continued use - my copy is dog-earred and well worn.

Summary: A MUST HAVE BOOK
Review: This book is one that I will have forever and refer to daily. Ms. Griffel explains very clearly how to really paint in the true impressionistic technique, which is interpreting the effects of light. The book gives you the tools to see color and sets up lessons for you to explore and understand how light effects objects. I think anyone who wants to paint in the true impressionistic style has to have the knowledge this book imparts to be successful. Along with explaining the effects of light on objects, Mr. Griffel also imparts the importance of values and structure in painting. Simply a must for every serious artist, also for anyone who wants to understand the effect of light and color.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: This has been the best instructional book I've purchased in a long time. I just completed a large landscape (oil on canvas) using the color mixes and techniques explained in the book and I am so happy with the results. To my joy, there is a workshop coming to my area in 2001. I plan to attend!

Review: This is a wonderful book. Ms.Griffel is not only a brilliant impressionist painter, she is a gifted teacher. Inspiring examples and clearly written explainations guide both novice and advanced painters in selecting and working with color in the landscape. I have referred to this book over and over again as I paint. I always find new and unusual color combinations, as well as tips for painting outdoors in varying light conditions. Summary: This book is a "must have" for any serious artist.
Review: This is the best book, on learning to see and paint color, that I have ever read. Of the hundreds of art books that I have collected over my career, no book has had as much impact on my painting as this one. I highly recommend it.

Summary: The most useful (and used) book in my library
Review: This is the most wonderful book on color that I have, and I have several. I thought I knew about color before I read this book, but after I went through the lessons, my art work improved drastically. Now color is one of my strong points. I work in pastel and I still can use her palette knife technique! When I paint out doors, alone or in a group, people stop to look and comment. Even other artists will say that color is one of my strong points. Thank you Lois Griffel!!

The book gives you lessons which start out by examining colored blocks in sunlight. You choose the lightest light and determine how warm that color is by comparing it to the other elements in your setup. Then you put that color down as the underpainting. I.E. Lemon yellow for the sunny side of a white block. After you have put down all your colors in the sun, you progress to the shaded parts of the setup. Start with the coolest cool, comparing it to the other parts again. Perhaps the undercolor for the white block may be cerulean. After the underpainting you then put in the local colors. The work acquires a mood because you are painting the first layer with emotion - how it feels. Anyway, instead of just reading a book, it HAS ACTUAL LESSONS and that is where you learn.

Summary: A Must Read!
Review: Whether you are a beginner or an experienced painter PAINTING THE IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE is a must read. Ms Griffel jumps right into color theory and makes it easy to comprehend and to follow along. This theory is applied to still life painting and then takes what you have just learned and applies it landscapes.

If you cannot take a course with Ms Griffel at the Cape Cod School of Art, then following her book in the step by step process is the next best thing.
