Rating: Summary: The arresting eyes of the Afghan girl and more Review: I first saw the picture of the mysterious (but now located) "Afgan girl" on a calender 20 years ago. I stopped, stared, walked past, returned and stared some more. I did not see the holes in her shawl or the dirt on her face until the second look. Only then did I realize that this was not the photograph of a model. The eyes are hypnotic.Portraits is filled with other remarkable photos of people. Ordinary people from ordinary places. The color schemes and balance in the photographs are mesmerizing. As one pages through the book, the clear oneness of humankind shows through. Many of the photos of children defy description. McCurry says in the prologue that faces stare back at him from places he will never forget. The book's message to me is that there are people all over the world whom we should never forget.
Rating: Summary: A Fantastic Book Review: I found this in my local library, and I was captivated and fascinated with the pictures inside. It's as if some of the pictures of the children are looking right back at me. My only crticism is that many of these pictures could have been larger. Some of them were so small that it left me frustrated. Nevertheless, this is a book that you may not be able to put down. The beautiful photos make this one of the tops in the fields of photography. The cover is somewhat chilling on what happens to many of the children throughout our world.
Rating: Summary: A great photographer Review: I gave this book a 4 star review because the book would have been better if it were a coffee table size book, and that I wish there would have been stories next to the images just like most phaidon books do. Steve McCurry is a excellent photographer, he carries the emotions of the people in the potraits...too bad it's all in 5x7" format.
Rating: Summary: The perfect gift for a portrait lover. Review: I gave this book to my girlfriend on her birthday, and she told me it was the best gift she ever received. I'm a photo lover too, and i must say that everytime i open this book, i find new faces and colors. Presented in an excelent edition. I recommend to all travel/portraits photographers. And the price is a bargain.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable but abit oversaturated Review: I have met Steve McCurry and viewed his slide presentation and am enchanted by his work. He captures his subject's mood and environment with a beautiful quality of light and color. Although I found it hard to maintain my enthusiam as there are so many images and no accompanying story with any of the images. I also wish that the book had been printed in a larger size. All the images are roughly 5x7 and larger images would have really made me feel as if the subjects were looking back at me. But please do not misinterpret this review, the book is a bargain. It is filled with pages and pages of wonderful images of people from areas many of us will never have the opportunity to visit, much less photograph with such intimacy. A great gift and a nice addition to anyone's table. I just wished it was bigger and had some text.
Rating: Summary: Breathtaking portraits but... Review: I loved the portraits in this book! You know a photo is brilliant if it causes you to look and stare at it for a while. The subjects almost jump out of the page and come to life. I'd love to photograph this way someday. The only drawback I felt was that in looking at these portraits, I wanted to know the story behind the person. I wish it included what both photographer and subject were doing and thinking at the time.
Rating: Summary: A unique snapshot of a unique moment Review: It is astonishing how Mr. McCurry manages to capture the unique moment when a simple snapshot of a face conveys the emotions, and the cultural and social context surrounding it. It is the magic of knowing when this exact moment is that makes the artist so great and his work so brilliant.
Rating: Summary: Nice Review: It was alright, but I oculd use a little more.
Rating: Summary: Pfff Review: It's avery interesting photo book for any amateurs or students or anybody actually..the only reproach i might say is that the book is a little small so when you turn the pages you can't really enjoy the picture and youi have to struggle with the pages..but it's a very interesting and very nice book,... i would rather recommend the postcard you can use them or just put them on the wall... quality /price is exellent...
Rating: Summary: We've had this book for 2 years and my kids never tire of it Review: Just yesterday they pulled it out and went through it AGAIN, pointing to pictures and LAUGHING. It is a delilght to watch them enjoy this book (My children are ages 6 and up). The photos are of different people (usually one person per photo), from many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Each one is WAY DIFFERENT from all the others. It will amaze you how many different kinds of people there are in the world. You'll love this book. --George Stancliffe
