Rating: Summary: Liberal this and Liberal that... Review: It's a good read. Funny and seems to be well researched, (By a team of Harvard Grads and Undergrads). It really puts the conservative spin on the "liberal media" into perspective. Being a die hard liberal, I hate the media and since it's supposedly so far on the left, I'm not too impressed with the bleeding hearts that seem to be making the neo-conservatives ears bleed. Too many "moderate" pundits use yelling and bullying as a debate device to push their conservative agenda across, it's nice to see Franken use actual stats, and research rather than he said she said nonsense and second hand information. I can see how exposing the great right lie, will get so many Republicans screaming for his head. It's entertaining, informative, and makes you realize the media is truly on the left, I mean your other left.
Rating: Summary: Lies? Review: It's a good thing Al put his lying face on the front.
Rating: Summary: Essential Reading for Every American Review: It's a good thing that Al Franken is so funny, because otherwise you'd be weeping as you read about how the right wing has ruined and shamed this formerly great country of ours. The lies, big and small, are so thick you can hardly keep up with them, but Franken does a very good job of bringing the truth to light, with a deft comic touch. The chapter regarding the scam behind the tax cuts is worth the price of the book alone. I'd suggest that every one read this book before they vote.
Rating: Summary: A combination of scary and hilarious Review: It's a great thing when a humorist decides to put his skills to work at creating something that is both entertaining AND informative. In "LIES," Franken exposes the devious hypocracy of politicians and pundits. Thankfully, being a comedian, he presents it all in a hilarious, fun-poking tone. I laughed out loud more times than I can count while reading this book and, more importantly, I learned some large and distrubing things about the leaders of the free world. It may be dark and cynical humor, but it's all keenly reserached truth. No matter what your political stances are, you should definitely pick this one up before you cast your next vote. You'll laugh and be enlightened at the same time. It's a real page turner too. Mixed in with the usual chapters are: some very funny anecdotes, a one act play about tax cuts and sarcasm, a new story where Bush and other draft dodgers are placed in an Apocalypse Now setting (with illustrations), and the comic book tale of Supply Side Jesus. All of it very over the top, but still laden with classic Franken irony.
Rating: Summary: Funny, smart, and true Review: It's a matter of some distress these days to be a little better informed than the average bear--to recognize that the mainstream media coverage we get (and don't get) is hugely shaped by corporate interests and political bias, and that the bias is NOT a liberal one, no matter how conservatives howl on their own networks and nationwide talk shows. Franken's book examines the "work" of Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, and other paradigms of an ultra-conservative media culture (Fox News, Clear Channel Communications, the Wall Street Journal) as his entry to talking about all the things not being covered by the media: the under-the-radar or kept-completely-from-us atrocities being perpetrated by the Bush administration and conservative bigwigs and industrialists on the environment, American civil liberties, working-class families, social services, and world peace. Funny and outraged like Michael Moore's Stupid White Men, insightful and outraged like Mark Crispin Miller's Bush Dyslexicon, Lies cements Franken's status as a top-notch political writer. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and if you've got a brain in your head, you'll vote the scoundrels out.
Rating: Summary: I've never read anything so painfully worthless in my life Review: It's a shame that people will read this nook and take its contents for truth or justice. Al Franken is, by far, the most childish and laughable writer I have read in a long time. He would have been better served by clinging to his SNL days (not that they were so great). I highly recommend reading Bill O'Reilly to everyone. His non-partisan viewpoint is enlightening. He is only concerned with showing the facts and truth on matters, as opposed to Franken who is all speculation and paranoia. Please be politically responsible and don't take this book, or any one book for that matter, as the gospel. Franken is doing us all a great disservice. Want proof? Just consider the ridiculous, paranoid and baseless title of this embarrassing book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: It's a shame that some people really don't "get" that this is satire. Or maybe they do and are just angry that anyone has the audacity to poke fun at them. In any case, all the recent fuss has worked out well for Mr. Franken. Thank God for people like him & Michael Moore, people who understand that we're allowed to make fun of conservatives and their whacky notions. Other funny books I enjoyed this summer are STUPID WHITE MEN and NO ONE'S EVEN BLEEDING.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic, funny and about time! Review: It's about time someone has the guts to tell it like it is. The media have ignored their responsabilities the past two years and have become shills for the present administration. Al Franken, Michael Moore and few others have decided to fight back. Right wingers and rednecks won't like it much, but they don't read much anyway I suspect.
Rating: Summary: Your Real Freedom Review: It's about time someone painted these cartoon cowboys into the sunset they deserve. Let's look forward to an awakened populace to kick these hawks back out to their fear mongering oil/power/profit sniffing range with the prairie dogs & other endangered existences, like the freedom of thought, choice & speech, that they so cleverly suppress in the name of Freedom & Security. Congratulations to Al Franken for taking on the "Ivory Tower" of the extreme right in such a fun, informative and entertaining manner.
Rating: Summary: Sharp, witty, right on target Review: It's about time someone really nails the right-wing blowhards on Fox and cable and exposes them for the frauds they are. It's pretty funny that most conservatives who read this or just see the title don't even understand irony or satire.
