Summary: A good read.
Review: I truely enjoy Michael Moore's work fr the most part. I largly enjoyed this book as well. However, as with his movie "Bowling for Columbine" it is subject to hyperbole and slightly distorted facts. By and large, though, it is a totally entertaining book that makes many good points (i.e. the 2000 election and right-wing "Democrats") as well as a few points that he doesn't back up enough (there are a few statistics that come to mind). And for those of you who would recomend "Slander" over this book, I recomend you read Al Franken's "Lies and the Lying Lairs Who Tell Them" or at least Chapers 2 and 3. That'll shut you up about Ann Coulter.

Summary: Please take notice!
Review: It's hysterical for people outside of the US (note to Americans - there are such places) to read the ignorant and bigoted views of the US rednecks who voted in Bush etc...

Moore is not a genius, and certainly not a great writer (though he is a masterful TV presence), but he is simply the voice of common sense, something which is completely unfamiliar to the vast majority of Americans for whom nodding in supine agreement to CNN is as involved as they get with current affairs.

Moore does not like the fact that your country is ruled by a tiny and utterly amoral cabal of white businessmen, who have bought off the political, legal and media establishments to such a degree that they can do whatever they like (invade foreign countries (Iraq, Grenada, Nicaragua), assassinate foreign heads of state (Allende) and export all the jobs of the American working man to Mexico or beyond with complete impunity while hurtling the globe towards environmental endgame.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but what exactly ARE Bush and co doing for you? Simply doling out tax cuts to the rich so your public services are run into the ground and intimidating you into voting for him for fear of being unpatriotic. Thanks!

His argument that there is no difference between Bush and Gore is utterly true. They may seem different to you, but then the entire US political spectrum would fit into a small sect of the UK Labour party (yes - Blair really IS that right-wing!) Both are funded and kept alive by corporations in it for themselves.

And the book does, if I remember rightly, have chapters on race relations, women's rights and so on. Perhaps you should read beyond the first chapter.

Overall it's depressing how many people can buy a book, and how obvious the groundswell of opinion is against Moore's targets in America among the small minority capable of holding a book the right way up, and things continue to go from bad to worse.

What's to be done? As Moore will probably realise soon - there's nothing to be done - even his Herculean efforts won't defeat the money machine. Perhaps we should just sit back and laugh...

Summary: Angry and hilarious
Review: A book every American should be forced to read. "Stupid white men" describes the sorry state that the United States are in. As the rest of the world is worried sick by the antics of Mr. Bush, a vast proportion of the Americans don't seem to understand that he is now the biggest security risk in the world. Michael Moore, Corporate America's pain in the lower backside, describes his readers how Bush got elected, what the effects of decades of relentless conservative government are on the position of the poor, the blacks, the women and other "minority groups" (as he rightly observes, women are actually the majority group, but they never DO something with this advantage). And he tells all this in a hilarious, readable way. Sometimes the references to America's national/internal affairs are incomprehensible for a European, but the overall picture is that we Europeans are right in not trusting the US leaders and government to represent us.

Summary: Don't Take It Too Seriously - It's Meant to Be Humorous
Review: Want an insider's guide to the truth about America? Michael Moore is one American with his head out of the sand, and has great evidence to back up his reasons of what's wrong with his country. A thoroughly entertaining read, and the most interesting thing about it is that it's all true. (A+)

Summary: Brilliantly Written
Review: Stupid White Men was an excellent book. Not only was Michael Moore consistent in his facts, he was able to add humor and intelligence into the book. While reading this book, I did not feel like I was being bombarded by a bunch of rants, because the book is not full of rants. It's cleverly written and detailed, and all the information is credible. I believe, though, that this book would probably be less appreciated by Conservatives....so for you Conservatives, be warned.

Summary: juvenille writing
Review: I bought this expecting to like it. I agree with much of his politics, I loved his "no war" message during the academy awards and in general agree with him. However, he sounds better in soundbites than in a book. His writing is juvenille/dumbed - down. Maybe he thinks everyone is stupid - and not just white men. While on the subject what's up with the retarded title. Maybe he feels guilty about being a white man and feels compeled to "suck up" to every non white male. The book would have been better in an essay or a long magazine article. But not much substance or credible facts backing his opinions.

Summary: Why can't I pick no stars?
Review: Michael Moore-put simply he is just the democrat's attempt to show off their "regular guy" supporters. This college drop out and oscar winner(that shows you how hollywood is off on some other planet) likes to ramble and distort facts which he dose a lot. He is a perfect examle of how off-base the liberal media is from the real world. If you happen to accidently read this like I did I recommened Ann Coulter's book Slander. That will set you stright again.

Summary: A true AMERICAN has spoken
Review: Why is it that believing everything the Government says about "terrorism", "Iraq" or whatever is considered "American"? Aren't free speech and a constant and unrestricted discussion (and often criticism) of the "system" the foundations of a modern and democratic society?
Why do so many so-called "Patriots" believe that any critical thinking outside of the CNN/CBS/NBC "box" is un-American? Driving an SUV on cheap gas, watching football on a big screen TV but not voting and not knowing anything about how corrupt our leaders are is not "living in the greatest country in the world"; that's being brain washed by an evil government. Thanks Michael for speaking your mind, our democracy depends on people like you.

Summary: Very Entertaining, But Very Biased
Review: I was really looking forward to reading this book. I thought it would provide witty, insightful political commentary. Boy was I wrong! While I did find the book mildly amusing, I can't but hope that all Moore intended with this book was to entertain. His "commentary" was inconsistent and often examined facts out of context so he could make his point (as far as I could tell his point was all men except Ralph Nader are bad).

An example of his fact twisting is he discusses how horrible it is that certain corporate executives charged with releasing cancer causing agents into the air basically have the charges dropped by the Justice Dept (headed by Ashcroft) because they were campaign contributors to Bush. He then compares these executives to a person who impersonated Tiger Woods and was charged with theft and perjury. This person was given 200 yrs to life. But, at the very end of the comparison he adds an important fact - that this person was convicted under California's 3 strikes law. This means that he had committed 2 prior FELONIES before the Woods impersonation. I certainly think that the executives should not get away with what they did, and I do not support the dumping of toxins into the environment, but I also support getting career criminals off of the street. Anyway, I feel Moore's point of social injustice loses a lot of its merit when he reveals the 3 strikes law was the reason for the huge sentence (and he never explicitly reveals that the person had committed 2 prior felonies). It is this type of fact manipulation that he uses to make his point.

Also, his playing with the facts made me wonder, what is he not telling me when he makes his claims? For instance he attacks Clinton for having the number of people who had health insurance decrease during the 8 yrs he was in office. He never mentions that Clinton tried to get a universal healthcare bill passed.

In his criticism of Presidents past and present, he seems to ignore the fact that the President is not a dictator who can do whatever he wants. He never mentions that the President has to deal with this little branch of the government called congress, and ultimately congress has to have a majority vote for legislation to pass.

He also resorts low blows. He points out in the book that George W. Bush's grandfather had business dealings with the Nazis. This fact while it may be interesting, it has no bearing on Bush's ability to be President, or even indicates what type of person Bush is (we all have family members that have done things we don?t approve of). Moore gives off the feeling that he is resorting to an "...oh yeah well you mother is a ______," sort of reasoning. There are plenty of other things to criticize about Bush; he does not need to result to things that are out of George W's control and happened 2 generations ago.

Finally, he resorts to positional arguments - all of the other side's ideas are bad, and all of my side's ideas are good. He criticizes Democrats for ever voting for a "Republican" piece of legislation. He reduces politics to an "us" against "them" game. He never considers that maybe the "Republican" legislation is in the best interest of everybody. I find this type of we know everything and you know nothing argument to be a put-off.

I was really disappointed with this book. He has many criticisms, but never offers any serious solutions (at least I hope they aren?t serious). Unless someone who?s opinion you trust recommends this book, I would skip reading it. There are plenty of well-written funny books offering political and social commentary (Molly Ivins has written several).

Summary: Had enough of Stupid White Men?
Review: When it comes to a choice between reading a well researched, reasonably argued political work, and reading an angry rant, I'll be more likely to reader the former. And STUPID WHITE MEN is definitely closer to the latter (as should be obvious from both the title and the cover of this tome). But, all the same, I really enjoyed reading this. While Michael Moore has done his research, documented his sources and thrown in some statistics when necessary, the book still feels like something you'd hear being screamed by the local lunatic on the street corner holding a sign saying, "The end is nigh!" Yet, if you're in the right mood for that sort of thing, then this is absolutely wonderful.

Yes, I agree with a lot (though certainly not all) of what Moore rants about in this book. And this is the key, because if you don't already agree with him, then there is no way that his abrasive style is going to convince any doubters. He's occasionally rude, frequently arrogant, and has absolutely no time for anyone who disagrees with him. Sure, he's preaching to the converted, but, hey, sometimes that's just what the choir wants.

It's an oddly timed book. It's pre-9/11 which means that he avoids that rather large topic. But it's also attacking Bush even though Bush hadn't been in office quite long enough to really do the sort of things that Moore hates. To make up for this, he spends a significant amount of time criticizing the Clinton/Gore administration for the large steps to the right that team made during their eight year reign. He also spends a lot of pages abusing the Republicans (and some Democrats) in Congress for all the lousy things they've been doing recently.

The election fiasco of 2000 is heavily dealt with, as one would expect from a book written the following year. Although I knew virtually all the facts that Moore dragged out, it was a great reminder of how bizarre the whole thing was. The chapter dealing with what happened in Florida should be required reading for anyone who thinks that democracy is simple or safe.

If you're a left-winger looking for something you can cheer or nod along with, then ANGRY WHITE MEN is a great place to start. However, if you're looking for something to convince your friends, family, and co-workers that bad things are happening in the USA, I'd recommend something a little more reasoned and researched (Ralph Nader's CRASHING THE PARTY should be excellent for this). The short answer is that if you think you'll love this book, then you probably will; it delivers exactly what it promises.
