Rating: Summary: This book changed my life! Review: I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with decisions or with anything. When I finished this book, I felt like a weight had lifted off of my shoulders because the book pulled me in and made me feel like I was a part of the book. Great book. I can't wait for the next Wally Lamb novel!!
Rating: Summary: Read this book...you won't regret it! Review: After reading and loving Lamb's first book, "She's Come Undone", I purchased "I Know This Much Is True" as soon as it came out. This book sucks you in. I sat down and read it in 8 hours...started at 8 pm and literally did not put it down till 4 a.m. There are so many "stories within stories" in this book, but they are not confusing and do not detract from the plot overall; in fact, they actually add richness to the story. This story is about identical twins who are in fact almost complete opposites, one with mental illness, one "normal". As the story progresses, though, the normal one starts to question what is "normal". It explores relationships with siblings, parents, children, spouses. You cannot help but feel what Dominick feels. I am now reading this book for the fourth time. Every time I read it I discover some other nuance about this book that I didn't notice the previous time. I have let all my friends and family borrow it, and I rate it among my favorites.
Rating: Summary: bleh Review: This book--not so great. I'm not impressed with Oprah's track record so far. I know I will meet alot of opposition to this, but this book is not interesting, especially considering the fact that you have to wade through 5 million pages of it. I am a twin, and found the book smacked with insincerity as far as that relationship. The writing style was annoying, and the ending a completely unrealistic letdown. Don't buy this book unless you have bad taste.
Rating: Summary: If you haven't yet read this, you're missing out.. Review: How can I begin to describe this book? It had such an impact on me, I read it over 6 months ago and still I refer back to it over and over. It made me feel so many different emotions: angry, pityful, happy, hopeful, sad and most of all, thoughtful. Throughout the 900 or so pages, I was overcome with feeling. If you're looking for a quick, light read, this is not the book for you. If you're looking to go deep inside a man, who is hurting so deeply, to discover his past and watch him pick up the pieces of his life, put them back together and move on, you'll love "I Know This Much is True". It will become your favorite book, as it has become mine.
Rating: Summary: Long story, but worth sticking with. Review: I avoided this one for a long time, in part because of the subject matter, and in part because it's so darn long. After reading Lamb's first novel 'She's Come Undone' and loving it, I thought I'd give this one a try. I didn't like it as much, but it was still pretty good. It is very well-written, so the length is not a problem once you get into it. This story follows the relationship between twin brothers--one is schizophrenic and the other one isn't. Lamb is a talented author. He uses flashbacks and alternating time periods to unfold the relationship between the brothers. The characters are very real, and very memorable. I'm glad I finally got around to reading this one.
Rating: Summary: More ambitious than She's Come Undone - and better too! Review: Wally Lamb's second novel, I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE, is more ambitious and more fully realized than his first, SHE'S COME UNDONE, with thematic chords being struck with greater complexity and subtlety. Dominick and Thomas are born identical twins but, perhaps in an argument for nurture over nature, they grow up to be entirely different people. Thomas, always fawned over by their mother, is now schizophrenic, with frightening bouts of self-mutilation that wound Dominick emotionally. Dominick both loves and fears his twin, and is torn by what they share. He discovers, through a translation of a family document, how dark their ancestral past is, and what he must battle in himself. He begins to see patterns - of abuse, of insanity, of violence, of passivity, of failed love - that shake him to the core. But Dominick is a survivor and a caretaker, which is what this novel is really about. Lamb takes us into the dark depths of Dominick's soul and then back out again. This sprawling and moving tale is not as depressing as it sounds. There is much here to call life-affirming, much joy to contrast with horror. Lamb's strength is his wisdom, however, and readers will emerge with a new sense of the world, exactly what a good novelist should accomplish. I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE is a hefty book, so don't expect to read it in a few sittings. If you aren't the type of reader who likes to linger with a story, pass on this. But for those who do, a true gem awaits you.
Rating: Summary: Spellbinding! Review: I was immediately taken in by "I know this much is true". The weaving of the interesting characters and their stories captivated me. The richness and complexity of life is within these pages. How much story was buried within just the first few chapters was amazing. What a great book! How life is full of curves, good and bad, and how our past has influence over us without even knowing it. I was thinking about my own life and how everyone's life is so complex. How from the beginning of our generations there are stories to tell. Also, having a sister and a nephew with a mental illness, it was interesting to read about the experience Dominic had in trying to get help for his brother. It was "REAL". The ending was a bit predictable but I loved the book from the beginning to the end! I hated to see it end.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful book Review: This book will hold your interest from the beginning to the end. It's filled with juicy secrets as well as touching, inspiring insights and truths about life. You'll begin to love the characters as you see them change and grow. I can only admire the author for being able to write something to great.
Rating: Summary: The Best! Review: Written from the perspective of an indentical twin whose brother is schizophrenic, this book will touch the deepest part of your heart. Imagine if you have spent your live looking out for your idential twin brother and one day he cuts off his hand in a public library as a protest to war. This book tells the story of a brother do dedicated to his twin that he has allowed his own life to suffer. It is often difficult to tell which brother has suffered the most. I have read this book twice and was unable to put it down either time. It will cause you to really take a good look at your life and realize that things could be worse!
Rating: Summary: I know this book is GREAT Review: As a fond follower of Oprah's Book Club, I have to say that this is the best I have read by far. Some books are stories - you can imagine the author sitting there drumming it out. 'I Know This Much Is True' is so involved, you become enraptured in what happens in Dominick Birdsey's life, in his struggles with his twin brother, the father he's never known, and the step father he's known all too well. I found myself rooting for relationships, crying at the tragedies. In this book you experience the greatest sorrow one can feel in life, and sheer joy at the accomplishments. I think everyone can see a little bit of themselves in Dominick, a true hero in my eyes.
