Summary: Lonely woman marries mid-western widower and forms family.
Review: A lonely, aging spinster, Glenn Close, falls in love with a mid-western farmer/widower, Christopher Walken. The farmer's two children quickly accept Close, but she has a difficult time accepting the hardships of the mid-west. They pull together as a family and succeed in overcoming one loss after another. Walken shows extraordinary reach in portraying a simple man true to his heritage and family. Close is believable as a prim and proper New Englander. They exhibit a determination to overcome life's obstacles while strengthening their bond as husband and wife. The children, especially the son, are adorable albeit a bit too sweet and amenable to accepting a new mother readily.

Summary: Excellent Book!
Review: This book was very interesting and somewhat entertaining. It describes the different relationships within the family, and how each differs from the other. The book was well written, and it provides those children who are going through their parents getting divorced or separated, a chance to see that things can turn out OK and the too can have a happy ending in their lives.

Summary: Great for the romantic at heart.
Review: While I enjoyed the story as an adult, I am not sure that all children will enjoy the story. I can imagine some children would find it boring and uneventful, although that is specifically what gives the text its character. Naturally, the romantic child at heart will adore the story. MacLachlan's text reads as poetry, which is another wonderful asset to the book. Although the book does not mention when it takes place, I would imagine that it would occur at least a century ago. It struck me odd that Jacob placed a national ad for a wife. Would that make Sarah a mail-order wife? I am uncertain whether this was common at the time of the story. After all, who would move halfway across the nation to live with, and potentially marry, a perfect stranger?

Review: Anyone who likes family stories will love this1986 Newbery Award winning book. Sarah answers an add in a newspaper to become a wife with a man she has never met before. Can Sarah give up her old life by the sea in Maine to become the mother of a midwest farm family? Everyone would enjoy reading about Sarah's new challenges on the farm. Will Sarah live this new life and be happy on the farm?

Review: I read this book as a homework assignment. It was good. My favorite part of the book was the way Sarah met the childrens father and the way she got along with the children. It was a fun and exciting book to read for kids my age but it could have been shorter. I havn't read any other books by Patricia MacLachlan but they are probably good too. Maryland

Review: This is a book that is extremely simply written yet its terse narrative hides a most poetic nature. This book is extremely touching and is poetry masquerading as prose. Its only flaw as well as its greatest asset is its simplicity but this results in a very short book. Still, all I can say is - Read it!

Review: I am a third grader. I like this book SARAH PLAIN AND TALL because it was exciting when they slid down the dune.It is interesting because Sarah tells a lot about the ocean and Anna and Caleb tell a lot of the prairie.
