Summary: Could put it down....but wanted to pick it up again
Review: I enjoyed this book....it is the first one of this author's that I have read. The characters are believable (I'm a retired police officer) and the plot held my interest. I read the book over 4 days & could put it down for awhile & pick it right back up and easily start where I had left off. I look forward to the next Patterson novel.

Summary: The First Victim is First Rate
Review: I first met Lou Boldt in The Pied Piper and then backtracked in our relationship by reading No Witnesses and Beyond Recognition. When I like a book series I usually read in groups of three and then take a year off.

I'm glad I didn't follow my rule with this Ridley Peason novel. It was a great read and I find myself looking forward to Middle of Nowhere. This is a first for me--five series books in a row without a significant break. And, you should know, that as a former English teacher I am very picky.

Here are the top three things about The First Victim:

1. Lou Boldt continues to be incredibly believable. I have a good friend who is a homicide detective in Washington State. Lou Boldt is so much like him that it's uncanny. His strained yet loving relationship with his wife adds deeper truth to the police procedural genre. I can personally vouch for Lou Boldt's feelings about his wife's recovery from cancer. They are real. Anything but cliche.

2. There is plenty of action in this novel, but the book never falls prey to the kind of trite, police stereotypes that litter most novels of this type. Boldt's friend and subordinate LaMoia comes the closest to a two dimensonal character, but the fact that he is the only one makes him unique.

3. The addition of the Stevie McNeal, the headstrong TV anchor, gives the novel a new direction. I am glad that Pearson gave the Daphne Matthew's/Boldt attraction a bit of rest.

Summary: An "A" for Effort--Keep Them Coming
Review: I get real tired with people who expect a 5 star novel every time up to bat. Personally I'll settle for a 5 star effort. The only thing that I really got bogged down with was the bureacracy. The rest of it was well paced. one of my fellow Ridley fans aptly described this as a mind thriller. definitely an apt description.

Summary: Audio Tape - I was unable to listen Scott Rosema is terrible
Review: I have been listening to audio tapes for several years and have never heard such a "bad read". Scott Rosema speaks extremely fast and without emotion. I was unable to get through more than one tape.

Summary: Too Easy to Put Down
Review: I have read all of the Lou Boldt books and this one was my least favorite. I loved The Pied Piper and couldn't wait to read this. The chapters were way too short without the usual character development. I wish I had waited to buy it in paperback!

Summary: Contractual Obligation?
Review: I have to wonder if Pearson was fulfilling a contractual obligation with this book. It lacked the gripping, edge-of-your-seat qualities that I expect from him. Lou Boldt seemed to take a backseat to the obnoxious Stevie McNeal in this story. Boldt rarely interacted with Daphne Matthews, which is disappointing because the chemistry between them is a major part of what makes his stories great. I also would have liked more narrative from Melissa while she was in hiding. Pearson missed a great opportunity to truly paint a vivid portrait of the sweatshop/illegal immigrant situation. I felt like I only had a one-sided view of the situation. Stevie was incredibly one-dimensional and a person I probably wouldn't like if I ever met her face-to-face. Buck up, Ridley. I hope your next book is better because I love your style!

Summary: The First Victim
Review: I just finished reading The First Victim and found it another fantastic and fast moving novel by Mr. Pearson. This book like many of Mr. Pearson has characters that you come to feel for and know. He sprinkles each novel with hints of past novels which helps with the familiarity of the characters. Always fast past and suspenceful, I highly recommend this and other Ridley Peason books.

Summary: Another Good Ridley Read
Review: I just finished The First Victim an hour or so ago and enjoyed it throughout. It had the good investigation work that Boldt is known for and a few surprises along the way. I read it in three days and was sorry to see it come to an end.

Summary: excellent book
Review: I love Ridley Pearson's books. I firt hurd of his book when he was interveiwed on the radio about a year and a half ago (95.5 WPLJ in New York) and they sounded interesting, so I picked up the book. Now i have been hooked on his books. When i hurd that First Victom was realsed i ran to book store to pick it up. As with his other books i couldn't put it down. I finished it in uder 2 weeks ( it takes me about 6 weeks to finish a school reading book half its size(or i just end up reading the cliffnotes)) It is an excellnt additon to his Lou Bold series.
