Hannibal : Movie Tie In

Summary: Vile. Depraved. Unworthy.
Review: I thought that Red Dragon was one of the best books of its genre that I had read, and SOTL was, arguably, even better. I can only assume that Hannibal was the author's reaction to the glorification of Hannibal Lecter that followed the movie of SOTL. If so, and Hannibal is indeed a parody of his earlier work, then Harris holds his readers in the ultimate contempt. I came away from this book feeling angry and disgusted (not to mention, cheated). This book has no redeeming qualities, and quite apart from its basic depravity, it's a big waste of time. It is sick, and my advice to the author is: "seek professional help". By the way, Australian coins come in the following denominations: 5cents, 10, 20, 50, $1, and $2.

Review: Although Hannibal is not nearly as good as Silence of the Lambs, it is at least extremely sickening. Thomas Harris knows all the soft spots that made my stomach twinge, even more so than Silence. Worth the read, if not the money, only for its semi - interesting plot and surprise ending.

Review: Thomas Harris couldn't have had a better chance of another hit, but boy did he certainly blow it. The strong characters he built in Silence of the Lambs were changed dramatically. What scared me so in the first book was that the plot could be somewhat plausible. Again, Harris destroyed this possibility especially with his ridiculous ending. I wound up kicking myself for spending time reading the book.

Review: Harris revealed himself at last in this stinker of a self-parody. It shows he has nothing but contempt for his readers. Anyone can go to the library and search back issues of The Wine Spectator, Cuisine Magazine and Fodor's Italy and come up with enough obscure references to truffles and wine to sound erudite to the unwashed masses. This book was not a thriller. It contained no thrill. Harris just filled 484 pages with his self gratification fantasies dressed up like trailer trash at the opera.

Review: Alas poor reader it is true; the author has poked you in the eye. I quote (page 128)'The exposition of Autrocious Torture Instruments could not fail to appeal to a connoisseur of the worst in mankind. But the essence of the worst ......is found in the faces of the crowd.' Hey! this is you. What a shot. Anyway, the book stinks. The ending is ludicrous. Read something else.

Review: After SOTL and RD, to say I feel let down is a ludicrous understatement. Is the purpose of this book expressed in the first paragraph of chapter 20?

Summary: glad I got this book for free.
Review: An unimaginative and uninteresting sequel written in such a naive linear fashion that the author has insulted his readers. I am so disappointed that I am writing this with 30 pages left to be read, and am still waiting for a chill to travel up my spine. I was so looking forward to that morbid sense of the macabre that Harris so brilliantly executed in Silence of the Lambs. No such luck. Clarice is weak, Mason is too unbelievable and I think poorly researched (at least as far as his "medical conditions" are concerned), the pigs are RIDICULOUS, Lecter isn't hungry any longer and has lost his chilling edge, and Margot is filler. I am also extremely disappointed in the entire FBI subplot. The only thing I can hope for to get any satisfaction from this book is that the author will spare us another contrived sequel. Amazon rating of 1 star is too generous for this book. glad I got it for free!!

Review: I read "Red Dragon" and really liked it. By comparison, this book was very disappointing. The plot is choppy, the characters are one-dimensional, the pseudo-psychology is uncompelling, and the storyline not only departs from reality, but violates its own internal consistency as well. The denoument for characters Starling and Lecter is entirely devoid of believability. (And I won't even get *started* regarding moral compass.)The only sense I can make out of this book is as a deliberate effort by the author to destroy his own franchise. Or maybe he's just spent too much time trying to place himself in the mind of a deranged murderer?Sum: If you're purely interested in scenes of grotesque violence, cannibalistic murder, dismemberment, etc., then this novel is for you. Otherwise, it is at best a waste of time. At worst, it is a deeply reprehensible, anti-moralist story which derogates social norms and instead recommends a vision of ultraviolence as a legitimate response to institutionalized sociopathy, and moreover as a valid therapy technique for personal growth.Mr. Harris, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Summary: The worst audio book I've ever heard
Review: It should have been great... The unabridged Hannibal and a long drive. Instead, we heard a mediocre story ruined by Daniel Gerroll, who was impossible to understand. Choosing to perform rather than read, we missed half of Mason Verger's tortured dialogue, got lost in all the Italian dialect and resented the accent he gave Clarice. Maybe the book is better, but I'll never know because I won't waste the time or money to read it. I promised the tapes to a friend for a transatlantic flight, but I'll do her a favor and loan her Certain Prey instead. What a disappointment.

Review: I read "Silence of the Lambs" so when "Hannibul" came out I had to read it and it is worth the read. The whole book is great and very gripping, but the ending is really a kicker. I loved the ending between Clarice and Lector, it was wonderful. Just how I hoped it would end from the time I first read "Silence of the Lambs". It was really better than I dreamed. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!!!!
