Rating: Summary: Challenging and Exciting! Review: Yes this book is a little wordy but the heart of the story is fantastic!Sir Walter Scott points out issues of race and love and gives us a view into a time of the world which we did not live through. I have to admit that the description is a little overdone but that just makes the mook more of a challenge to read which is what I love about it. The plot and the characters are true ideas of the world around us and not some fantasy land.
Rating: Summary: Ivahoe has depth, significance, and entertainment value Review: Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe is the result of early efforts at the novel as a genre, and therefore may be a bit cumbersome for some readers. To enjoy the slightly antiquated language one must have an appreciation for the careful construction of phrases and the romance of the words. Once past these qualifiers, however, Ivanhoe is a brilliant piece of literature that deals directly with prejudice, racism, and politics in the midst of a heroic tale of tournaments, honor, and love. This is no work of mere fantasy but a well-developed commentary on human nature.
Rating: Summary: Could have been much better Review: The book has too much description of everything. I was hoping for a lot of suspense and action, but all I saw was just a bunch of words that just didn't make me say, "WOW!"
Rating: Summary: A slow read, yet interesting Review: Ivanhoe is a action/romance that takes place in the 12th century. It is a story of honor, chivalry, and love. I enjoyed it, but had a few complaints. First, I found it to be a little too long. Second, I thought the author, though poetic, was too discriptive. Third, It was written in old English, and I found myself re-reading some statements too understand what the author was saying. Now that I have criticized this book, I thought I would say what I enjoyed about it. 1. It was full of action and suspense. 2. It had many interesting and fun characters. 3. The author was clever in how he presented the plot One final thing. I was a little suprised at the response of some younger readers. As a 13 year old, I admit I was forced into reading this for school, but now I am glad that I did. I would encourage others to give it a chance.
Rating: Summary: Persistence is the key to reading this book! Review: When I first began reading Ivanhoe, it was very hard to get into. In fact, I put it down and didn't pick it up again until several months later when I was bored on a rainy day. But as they say, the best books don't capture your interest untill the middle, and Ivanhoe did just that. It will be hard for you to start reading the book, but trust me, the end is well worth it! Take my adivce, read this book, it's full of interesting stories about love and romance in the past.
Rating: Summary: TOO MUCH DETAIL Review: I think that detail is a very important writing tool in any novel. On the other there comes a point to which one can say, "zzzzz". This book is nothing but detail. Who wants to read a book that goes on and on about something that has little to do with the point of the novel. I dont get bored easily, but this book is total z's. I think it would have been a lot better if some of the detail was cut down to just a paragraph not 3 chapters.(sarcastic remark)
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: After reading some of the reviews, I'm sad to say that most of the people who gave bad reviews had terrible grammar and obviously shouldn't be reading a book of this level... or evaluating it. They obviously don't understand the concept of "romances" either. A must-read for those capable of reading books such as this [Ivanhoe is a wordy book, I admit].
Rating: Summary: I LOVE IVANHOE!!! Review: Ivanhoe is one of my favorite works. I can't stand to read some of these disparaging reviews. First of all I need to clear something up: Ivanhoe is NOT by any means BORING. It is full of ACTION and EXCITEMENT. What leads some to call it "BOOORING" is really the result of Sir Walter's careful eye for detail. The reader must also keep in mind that Scott was a Romantic, and works of that genre tend to be wordy. Ivanhoe is not a quick read- if you choose to read it, be prepared to spend some quality time with the characters. The only complaint that I have of Scott are the numerous anachronisms- however, they are usually rather slight and should not upset the story's credibility for the reader. On a brighter note, Scott paints realistic, though not three-dimensional, characters who always stay true to themselves. This work is a must-read for those who wish to enhance their literary backgrounds. Having read it, I have come across numerous references and allusions to the story, which I can now fully appreciate.
Rating: Summary: A great knights' romance!! Review: This is a great novel about knights in the Middle Age. The characters are attractive. They can insist on their ideals fight for themselves. The dialogues are humorous and interesting. I especially like the descriptions of battles, because they are really vivid and exciting.
Rating: Summary: Full of human nature Review: I like this novel very much and I have read it many times. I think the characters are attractive, even the hero's enemy. The dialogues are interesting, too. The other success is the discription of battles. In addition, the story shows great human nature. Of course, there is a weakness, that is the "length", the original version is too long, I think. So some readers might lose their endurence to read the whole book.
