Rating: Summary: A grand adventure. Review: I enjoyed this book from begining to end. McMurtry can make his characters come to life better than any of the other authors that I have read. You can almost feel yourself in the landscape and you lose yourself in the great character development. Saddle up boys you are in for an exciting story.
Rating: Summary: Good Story - Provides insight into living in the old West Review: Enjoyed this book. However, I must say it did start off a little slow. This book was so highly recommended I was disappointed at first because not a lot happening until about mid way...The last 300 pages it picked up and Im glad I stayed with it... Read it you will enjoy it..all 945 pages.
Rating: Summary: Simply Amazing Review: This is by far the greatest novel I have ever read. Larry McMurtry's vision of this important time in our history is nothing short of outstanding. I recommend this book to anyone that wants a story that will stick with you long after you put it down at night.
Rating: Summary: Very good Review: At first, by its near-to 1000 page length one would be rather mislead. To be utterly truthful, there were times in which this book lagged, somewhat, and I wouldn't be surprised, what with it being the size it is. Yet, all in all, the reader is in for a treat when reading this book. It is the third in a series of four novels, and it is indispensable reading, really for those accompanying the Texas Rangers' adventures. It's not my favorite in the series, though- the condition of favorite goes to "Comanche Moon"- but I can't really say that until I have read "Streets of Laredo" which is the one I am reading now. Just wanted to say thank you once again. I haven't had this much fun with a saga ever since I read John Jakes' eight-volume Masterpiece of the Kent Family Chronicles. Keep up the wonderful work, Mr. McMurtry!
Rating: Summary: Two texas rangers take their ranch to Montana. Review: THIS BOOK WAS GREAT!Every time I read one page I always wanted to read more.Larry Mcmurty should do more of the Lonesome Dove stories. I've seen the movies and read the books. They're great.
Rating: Summary: Lonesome Dove is not only for Western fans. Review: McMurtry's Lonesome Dove initially tells the story of the Hat Creek Outfit of Lonesome Dove and, particularly Augustus (Gus) McCrae and Woodrow Call. Both former captains in the Texas Rangers, the aging pair demonstrate the courage which has made them famous as they decide to drive a cattle herd to Montana, after hearing glowing reports from a former friend, Jake Spoon. McMurtry collects an ensemble of characters, from the pathetic keeper of Lonesome Dove's saloon, to the sad, lonely and lost whore Lorena, to the wild and reckless Jake Spoon to ultimately provide readers with a very fine tale of what was probably the REAL Old West, full of natural disasters, and some truly despicable characters.Lonesome Dove is an epic Western. It is the only Western that this reviewer has persisted with, as it is above portraying narrow genre stereotypes. McMurtry always favours powerful description over cliched phrases and is able to produce both adventure and poignancy in one powerful novel. Lonesome Dove is a truly great achievement.
Rating: Summary: Superb, one of my all-time favorites Review: Along with Lord of the Rings, this is at the very top of my list of novels worth reading for sheer pleasure and joy.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT BOOK! ONE OF THE BEST I'VE EVER READ! Review: Lonesome Dove is a monster of a book, with vivid characters and anything but predictable. It's about Woodrow F. Call, and Agustus McCrae to x-Texas Rangers who have started a livery Epourium in Lonesome Dove, a dusty little Texas town. Woodrow (Call) decides he wants to take a cattle drive up to Montana and start a cattle ranch. Lonesome Dove is a drama, comedy, and love story, that is definately worth while. I would DEFINATELY recommend this book to anyone, whether you like Westerns or not. Lonesome Dove reveals what the old west was probably like, not like the corny Westerns on TV. This book is definately worth anyone's time. What else can I say? Just read it!!!
Rating: Summary: One of my all-time favorites. Review: After I finished reading Lonesome Dove the first time I wanted to write Mr. McMurtry a thank you letter for all the hours of perfect happiness and contentment he gave me while I was reading his book. I never did write that thank you letter but instead re-read Lonesome Dove several years later. I don't remember when I have been so touched by a book's characters and the story of their lives. I refused to watch the TV mini-series because I didn't want to see "my characters" looking anything but the way I envisioned them in my head. I have recommended this book to so many people and will continue to do so. If you're looking for a beautiful, fat, juicy book to really sink your teeth into - this is the one.
Rating: Summary: Cleverly crafted familiar characters return to astound. Review: One of the best I can remember of Larry McMurtry and I'm a fan who's read most of his work. Most of his books are filled with the insightful details and local trivia woven into the story as well as humor that really holds interest. If I think about a book when I'm not reading it.....that's a good book, for me.
