Rating: Summary: Wow!! This is an excellent book!!! Review: I am so astonished by the way Mr. McMurtry fits everything together in the book, "Lonesome Dove". I have never been so interested in a book that I could actually read 100 pages in one sitting. He is an excellent author!!
Rating: Summary: Definitely a MASTERPIECE!!! Review: This IS the best western novel ever written. The way that Mr. McMurtry has superbly portrayed a portion of American history is, to say the least, impressive. I am overwhelmed by the feelings that I'm left with, now that I'm finished reading the book. You will feel proud, sad, joyful, angry and in love. In love with the story and the characters which become so real as you read. Gus, Call, Newt, Dish, Deets, July and on and on. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to all readers!!
Rating: Summary: I read this book slowly because I didn't want it to end! Review: Being a young reader, I still have much to learn about human emotion, but as I read this book I instinctly knew that Larry McMurtry had gotten it right with his characters. Although it is impossible that I would ever be placed in the same situations as Gus and Call, I felt that McMurtry captured their reactions and feelings perfectly. After I put the book down, I wanted to go down to Texas and ride around under an enormous sky for the rest of my life. I felt both drained and exhilarated, and I can't even describe some of the other emotions. This was and still is the best book that I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic, the best western Ive ever read! Review: Its definatley one of the top five books ive ever read.dont miss it.The characters are first rate.I laughed all the way through it and hated to end it.
Rating: Summary: One line cannot say enough about this must-read novel. Review: Mr. McMurtry has woven together history and fiction to create a true masterpiece. The character Gus McRae is the embodiment of all that makes cowboys an enduring American icon. The friendship of Capt. Call and Gus represents one of the pillars that built the West and their adventures are of the mythic sort that make Western America one the greatest landscapes ever to be tread on by man. A must read for any generation.
Rating: Summary: Larry McMurtry is a God!!!! Review: This is definitely in my top 10 favorite books of all time. My heart broke when it was over.
Rating: Summary: Sorry, folks Review: Let me start off by admitting that I have my biases. I'm not a big fan of pop fiction, and I know that contributing my 2 star review will hurt some people. But after hearing accolade upon accolade about this novel, I feel I need to speak my mind.First, McMurtry has written an admirable book. It may fall short of the mark, but you got to give the guy credit. He tries. Mostly, this is a pop fiction book masquerading as something more, something literary. My feeling is that McMurtry should have stuck more along the traditional pop western lines rather than try his hand at something that portends to be "serious." The characters are thin, the dialogue is pure Hollywood, and the writing overall is just passable. And at times, to be honest, I was downright insulted by some of the stereotypes, particularly the whore (whose name escapes me right now). Why do Hollywood and pop fiction writers obsess with the hurtful and false images of women, particularly, in Lonsome Dove, that prostitutes are women with hearts of gold, carefree spirits, and the girlish charm to make the most hardened of men weak in the knees? TI'm afraid McMurtry shares more in common with Steven King than, say, Faulkner. Here's my challenge to the fans of this novel. Pick up Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses, which is a difficult read, but it makes Lonesome Dove look like Gunsmoke.
Rating: Summary: A must read for fans of westerns, romance,& fiction; READ IT! Review: The most enjoyable book I have ever read. I laughed, cried, and "lived" with the characters as if reading a biography, or family history rather than fiction. Make sure you have the time to finish it once you start.
Rating: Summary: Amazing!!! Review: By far the best book I ever read. A must read!!
Rating: Summary: This is the best western i have ever read. Review: To say that this book is amazing would be the understatement of the century. This book surpasses all of my expectations for a western. Usually they are about men with pasts, and a hardness about them. Yet Lonesome Dove was true to life and beautiful. It worked in romance, death, and friendship into a wonderful saga. Hopefully this book will remain as popular when i have children. I recommend this book to everyone who is thinking about reading it.
