Summary: A MASTERPIECE
Review: LONESOME DOVE...A MASTERPIECE, TO SAY THE LEAST. AFTER READING THE OTHER REVIEWS HERE, I WAS IMPRESSED THAT READERS WERE ABLE TO PUT INTO WORDS HOW MUCH THEY ENJOYED THIS TREASURE OF A BOOK...I AM AT A LOSS TO TRULY EXPLAIN IN WORDS HOW DEEPLY WONDERFUL (AND ON SO MANY DIFFERENT LEVELS) THIS BOOK IS. THE MOST HEARTBREAKING MOMENT IS WHEN YOU READ THE LAST WORD ON THE LAST PAGE....YOU WISH IT COULD GO ON FOREVER. LARRY MCMURTRY, I AM IN AWE OF YOU AND I THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS BOOK.

Summary: It moved me to laughter, tears, and a hundred other emotions
Review: I read this book first when I was 13 and several times since (I am now 18). I have always loved reading and have read a fair number of books, but this novel, without a doubt, is the greatest book I have ever had the privilage to read. The characters, plot, setting, everything is a feast for the imagination. The first time I read it, I put it down for about two weeks when I was about 10 pages from the end, I just could not bring myself to finish it. If you are looking for a great novel to lose yourself in, please, pick up Lonsome Dove.

Summary: Simply my favorite book of all time.
Review: Lonesome Dove, the sprawling 800 page masterpiece of the American West, is wondrous. Breathtaking scenery, vivid characters, haunting dialogue--Lonesome Dove is why the Pulitzer Prize was instituted. There is no weakness in this novel, other than the fact that it has to come to an end. Luckily, McMurtry offers Comanche Moon and Streets of Laredo, and, to a lesser extent, Dead Man's Walk, to feed the lingering hunger that Lonesome Dove leaves. And unbelievably, the miniseries manages to capture Lonesome Dove in epic splendour--it could very well be the best book-to-motion picture adaptation. Period. If you haven't read this book, read it, and if you have, then read it again.

Summary: GREAT!!!
Review: Simply the greatest book I've ever read, from page one when we first meet Gus and Call of the Hat Creek Cattle Company to the best ending of any book I've read, and one hell of a story in between!!! Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Summary: The grandest narrative of the American cowboy ever written.
Review: I cannot heap enough praise upon this book. Honestly it took me an entire summer to get through the first 200 pages, but after the boys started their journey, I could not put it down. The characters are so rich. The prose and the dialogue are unequivocably superb. Gus's humor made me laugh so hard sometimes I thought I wouldn't be able to come up for air. Call's initial inability to show love or emotion made me love him that much more when he kicked butt for his son (whom he wouldn't claim as his own) and when he refused to go back on his promise to Gus at the end of the book. A fine, detailed, wonderful novel that no one should have the misfortune to miss!

Summary: My favorite book EVER.
Review: Cindy_p@mackeymitchell.com. I've reread this book so many times I've lost count -- at least once a year since 1986. I agree with what so many other readers have written here. I've only attended one book-signing, and that was January 1997, when Larry McMurtry came to St. Louis to sign Zeke and Ned. Afterwards, he graciously signed any other books we all brought. I told him I had to meet the man who wrote my favorite book of all time -- and I'm a voracious reader. I told him John Steinbeck had always been my favorite American author -- until Lonesome Dove. I meant every word, and he seemed touched by the compliment. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Summary: If you own no other book, you must own this.
Review: Simply put, Lonesome Dove is what I expect of a Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Unfortunately, it has spoiled me to the point that I fear I will never find another book as beautifully written and as finely crafted as this. As a voracious reader, I vote this the novel of the century. Truly the "Great American Novel."

Summary: Lonesome Dove: a memorial epic, the best book ever written!
Review: This 945 page journey through America's past in the wildest western territory is a definite must-read. The characters are so real that when certain events occur to them the reader can feel it themselves. My favorite characters are numbered many: Newt, Pea Eye, Gus, Deets, Lorie, and Roscoe Brown. I think the best part of the book is when Gus and Clara are reunited after their sixteen year separation. Gus's witticisms always make me laugh each and every time I read the book, which has been about six times total now. This is the type of epic where, each new time you read it, you derive a bit more information from the story. I have also read other books by Larry McMurtry, and they, also, are wonderfully written. Readers of nearly any age could enjoy this book. Age doesn't matter, because I am only fifteen years old. I highly recommend reading Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. by: Kate Hoover

Review: . . . and you'll see what all the hype is about. If you are an avid reader (and why else would you be here if you weren't), and you haven't read LONESOME DOVE, then your missing out on an adventure that your imagination should not be without. Why do we read? To escape, even if for just a few minutes into an authors world where fiction becomes reality. That's why we read, that's why your in this bookstore, to find a book and hope it satisfies your thirst for an escape. Some do it with alcohl, some with drugs, my advice is to let the words of Mr. McMurtry take you over, and swallow you into a world where life is at its most exciting and fullest.
