Summary: Something to Believe In
Review: Dr. Peeke's work has helped hundreds of women and men in the Washington, DC area. The book highlights her humor and empathy in working with patients who cannot explain why - despite diets and exercise - they cannot seem to lose weight.

I should know - I've lost over 35 pounds through Dr. Peeke's plan and continue to keep it off after 4 years. I HIGHLY recommend that if you can't read the book, that you buy the audiotape and listen to her enthusiasically coach you through the process (a double whammy - I walked off lots of weight by plugging in audiobooks and going for it!).

I only wish that there were more Dr. Peekes in the world to help coach women (and men) to find their authentic life - full of vitality and joy.

Summary: At Last! A Reasonable Explanation and Sensible Approach
Review: Dr. Peeke combines solid research common sense, compassion and a flexible approach-- not a diet plan for combatting the stress that causes overweight, as well as the weight itself. It has been said that it has more "brainpower" than most books of this genre, and that's why I bought it. I was not disappointed. Although I have battled both stress and overweight for all of my adult life, I never fully appreciated the connection between the two. Dialog boxes and real-life quotes and examples helped me to see a lot of myself in the stories that were recounted. Those women who have learned Dr. Peeke's techniques for planning, regrouping and stress-minimizing nutrition give hope to those of us who still struggle. Although her cutting edge findings are straight out of the scientific literature, Dr. Peeke does a great job of making them highly understandable, easily accessible, and most importantly, user friendly. Now if she would only move in to my house and workout with me every day!

Summary: Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt
Review: My problem with this book is that it tells you (rightfully so) that diets are no solution and then it proceeds to outline a diet you need to follow for the rest of your life. It didn't give me much more information than is available from other books, like Oprah's book "Make the Connection" and Barry Sear's "The Zone", although it does give some interesting info. explaining how stress physically affects appetite and why it's easy to gain weight and hard to lose it the older a woman gets. But as far as HOW to lose it, it's pretty much the same old story: eat less and exercise more, for the rest of your life, with a lot of cutesy-pie jargon thrown in to fool you that there's much that's new in what the author is saying.

Summary: Yet Another Gimmicky Diet Book
Review: As someone who has published dozens of articles in scientific journals on weight control, I can assure anyone who reads this review that this book is chock full of pseudo-science and useless information. There is no evidence that supports this author's claims about toxic fat. Also, why is it that many studies have shown that obese people do not differ in personality or stress management skills from non-obese? When people lose weight and keep it off, they do so with lots of exercise, very consistent low fat eating, and by keeping this aspect of their lives as a major priority - despite the stresses and strains of everyday life. Its a difficult and humbling challenge for everyone who undertakes it. This book does not make it easier .

Summary: WARNING to MEN: THIS BOOK IS FOR WOMEN!
Review: I have no problem with a book directed to women on this subject and based on research on women. In fact, for women, the book appears to be excellent.

HOWEVER, I have a BIG problem with the deceptive marketing of the book: There isn't the faintest clue on the front cover that half the human race is excluded. Every pronoun in the book is "she" or "her"; every reference to people is "women". And all the research on which the book is based is research on women.

I don't know if the author had anything to do with this deception. But certainly the publisher, Viking Penguin, ought to be ashamed of itself. I will think twice or thrice before ever buying one of their books again.

Summary: Fight Female Fat over Forty--better title.
Review: If you're a woman, buy this book. If you're a man, don't waste your money. Dr. Peeke has written an excellent book for women. Unfortunately, the marketing for this book suggests it is for everyone over forty. This is a gross misrepresentation, and a major miss by the book's editor of a much larger market for the book. After receiving the book and discovering its unadvertised gender bias, I had still hoped there would be enough crossover for men to make it useful. Not so.

Summary: Finally....
Review: Fight Fat After Forty, brings such understanding to so many questions I've had and some of the stories parallel my own situation. It's very interesting how the studies have come about to help find solutions to this "constant weight battle" and stress. Finally, so many things I've pondered are being confirmed. As a single parent I have been operating under extreme stress for several years. Though I've fought the yo-yo weight all my life, I am now 45 and I just don't have the strength to do it again. However, because my children as well as myself worry about a heart attack or other ailment I am establishing healthy practices for the rest of my life. I just recently purchased a treadmill and am eating different. But something I couldn't understand was why I kept so much weight around my waist! I use to lose all over fairly evenly and always had a waist. It's been very discouraging to work so hard with the results taking four times as long as it used to! There are so many "programs" out there and it wearies me to feel I am so far behind. I've always been the "show me" kind and this really makes sense! I thank the Lord for giving understanding, reminding me I am not alone and Pamela Peeke for bringing "Us" hope.

The author Dr. Peeke becomes your life coach. You'll like her style and sayings. And you'll turn to her book often to keep you on track to be fit, trim, and a lot less frazzled. Summary: Toxic is right
Review: I gained new understanding of how destructive stress can be on my health. Dr. Peeke's explanation of how the body processes food differently after 'midlife' precisely diagnoses what I've seen happen to my own body. She also reminded me of my sweet grandmother, who ate an apple every night before bedtime. She lived a long and healthy life. I'm vowing for that apple now instead of that last glass of wine. This book is truly a gift to share with others. Just like my new beverage of choice that replaced my morning brew. Its called s oyfee and taste so wonderful with no caffeine or acids. Organic and made from soya! Bye bye acid stomach and hello healthy tummy! Google it under "acid free coffee"

Summary: Who is Nancy Lloyd?
Review: I bought this book a week ago and have been working with this program for about 5 days. I still haven't done everything perfectly, and I've lost 3/4 of an inch around my waist! I figure out the content of the foods that I cook by using Corinne T. Netzer's The Complete Book of Food Counts, but I figured all the daily gram and calories requirements using this book. After a few weeks, I know that I won't need to look as much up because I'll just know the information, but knowing the difference in my body now, and my body when it was 25, makes a big difference in how I look at food and decide on my choices. YOU SIMPLY CANNOT EAT THE SAME WAY YOU DID WHEN YOU WERE 20, 25, 30 or even 35! YOUR METABOLISM HAS CHANGLED DRASTICALLY. Do yourself a favor and figure out WHY it changed and what to do about it and BUY THIS BOOK.
